To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

DCIHoops · 25/06/2020 08:17

@ppeatfruit

I am listening to Round The Horn on Radio 4 Extra as I type! I like some of the classic comedies, not all of them though! Thank goodness for R4Ex.!

I watch T.V. sewing (repairing old bath mats, clothes etc.) eating fruit (not sweets , my teeth need to kept good, they're my own Grin )

I recently discovered round the horn as well - I love it, so clever and funny
ppeatfruit · 25/06/2020 08:51

Yes DC Grin There are some v good comedies and some very bad ones on R4X!

Oh yes Bardy I never use film now. I collect a lot of different sized old tops and use them to cover leftovers in the fridge .What I do have to do is educate dh , he's stuck in the present!!!! Grin

BardyMum · 25/06/2020 09:05

Ooh another thing I have revived, a written physical address book and birthday book. I’ll live with the crossings out rather than losing the lot every time I change email address or mobile phone. Can’t be arsed to work out how to do it electronically.

BardyMum · 25/06/2020 09:18

PPeat yes I take some pride in the dangerously leaning tower of bowls in the fridge. Smile

laurelhedge · 25/06/2020 09:22

Turban type headbands. I think a lot of people are finding them trendy, but they are still very 1940s. Great until the hairdressers reopen

BardyMum · 25/06/2020 09:24

Talking of DHs, one of my grannies‘ DH brought her tea and toast to eat in bed every morning. That was after he’d already cleaned the family’s shoes and laid out the breakfast table for everyone else to come down to. He made her a G&T or some thing I can’t remember made with bitter lemon every evening. Don’t get me wrong it was not an equal relationship by today’s standards but he acknowledged her domestic work constantly rather than choose not to see it, (which I see more happening now Hmm) and that sort of small thing was a nice gesture.

That reminds me I forgot about all the cordials and mixers- lime cordial, elderflower cordial, ginger ale, clear lemonade, cloudy lemonade, ginger beer, soda water, no wonder people used to need drinks cabinets to fit all that in plus the actual gin or whisky or brandy. Is brandy still something people drink today?

I also forgot adults having little collections being a very respectable pastime: some collecting stamps in albums, some collected tiny matchboxes from holidays or hotels and restaurants as a souvenir. Playing cards and Scrabble a lot. Raising money for charities via community events. Lots of adult hobbies

Imissmoominmama · 25/06/2020 09:26

My grandparents played Bridge. They had special green felt topped card tables. I wonder whether my dad still has them...

laurelhedge · 25/06/2020 09:27

Dutch style bicycle with a basket in the front. So much easier to ride than other bikes. It's pastel blue so not too old ladyish

ppeatfruit · 25/06/2020 09:33

I've never stopped using my address book and filling in diaries Bard Which our eldest does too! And what I love is our 2 youngest adult children every year, asking me to text the family's addresses to send them cards!!! It shows how reliable the iphones and computers are !!! (or how lazy the youth are) I'm not sure which Grin

ppeatfruit · 25/06/2020 09:36

laurel Lucky you ,I aspire to a proper ladies' semi\electrical bike. with a basket, yours is my favourite colour Grin

BardyMum · 25/06/2020 09:38

Ooh and my posher granny had green or royal blue felt bottoms on lots of her things that stand on wood surfaces like clocks- I really like that and for years I have gone about sticking those sticky felt pads on everything I can. Smile

I get my milk delivered - in glass milk bottles - and I love it. Only twice a week rather than daily. I have a bottle holder that I use to put the used ones out on the doorstep the night before.

I wish we had a milkman always Dh goes to the dairy sadly he has to take the plastic bottles , they use, but they are refilled there. I don't drink cows' milk but it's amazing organic whole milk, he loves it. We are in Fr. in the countryside.

Binterested · 25/06/2020 11:51

felt lined shelves

Also a store cupboard. My grandma had one. Stuffed with tinned fruit, packets of jelly, condensed and evaporated milk, fancy tins of biscuits. We were never allowed to eat any of it but used to open it in secret just to gaze upon the riches Grin

Bioprepper · 25/06/2020 11:58

I was thinking of you al this morning as i got out of the shower in my shower cap and dowsed myself in avon soft musk talc. Turned out nice again so i went pottering round the garden in my floppy hat to deadhead my roses.

Got to do some work now but hopefully finishing early so i can sit in the garden with my wordsearch book and maybe a sneaky gin and lime.

GarlicSoup · 25/06/2020 12:14

When I was a little girl, there was a very exotic lady living in the next street. She wore a turban (it was when a hair appointment was due apparently) kaftans and orange lipstick. I was fascinated by her, she reminded me of Princess Margaret.
When I grew up, I mentioned her to my Granny... she laughed her head off and said “ oh her! She was just xxxxx from the next town, nothing special, she had ideas above her station, that one!”
I was sooo disappointed😃

Haven’t seen a goosegog in years! Known as ‘snot’ at school😁

Eating food out of season... I can’t bring myself to eat Strawberries in December!

Leaving fruits and veg on neighbours doorsteps when you had a glut... we had damsons and plums, we were left apples, potatoes and pears in return!

PeskyRooks · 25/06/2020 12:25

I have a pale blue bike with a basket too! A Pendleton Somersby. I wear a long skirt when I ride it and feel like the nasty lady from Wizard of Oz (who is the witch later)

sunsunyeah · 25/06/2020 12:26

My Grandmother used to give me "supper" which was a bag of crisps and a bottle of pop after the evening meal before I went to bed.

I'm now in my 50s and still treat myself to supper if I am peckish before I go to bed. I usually substitute the soft drink for a glass of milk.

I've been told by DP that back in his village, despite always leaving the doors unlocked during the day, you had to completely bolt up porch, back door and any potential abandonment site come late summer for fear of falling victim to Phantom Marrow Givers.

If you forgot for one minute, as soon as you went to the door, there would be a pile of the buggers dumped there.

We live in the town centre. Last time I grew a single plant, I bartered them to the nearest health food cooperative as they were organically grown. And Beetroots with the nearest Polish shop.

Didn't have to buy soap powder or washing up liquid refills for two years. Or pierogi.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 25/06/2020 12:49

kaathesnake I'm so jealous that you have love letters! My late DH never wrote letters to me, and I moaned about it. He said the only love letter he would write would be for me to open after his death (he was dying at the time) but then the cancer spread to his brain and he died quite quickly, so no letter Sad

Binterested · 25/06/2020 12:55

Grin at the phantom marrow givers Grin

Horrible memories of enormous stuffed marrow as a 70s staple Envy
