To realise I like old lady things

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Mackesons stout
Condensed milk sandwiches
Elderflower presse

wildthingsinthenight · 24/06/2020 18:41

Love condensed milk!
And elderflower

alwaysreadyforablether · 24/06/2020 19:39

Just watched the first of the Talking Heads episodes and really enjoyed it. That's something you don't seem to get anymore on TV - plays - I can remember my old aunt watching plays. I didn't enjoy them at the time but I'm sure I would now!

Michelleoftheresistance · 24/06/2020 19:42

Sloe gin!
And damson jam.
All kinds of jam. Love making jam....

AnneShirleysNewDress · 24/06/2020 20:12

Lavender and rose everything
Tea with a cup and saucer
Oh, and I want to learn crochet

DanglyTasselsOfThigh · 24/06/2020 20:32

I love Tweed by Lentheric, not to wear but it reminds me of my late mum ❤️

emcla · 24/06/2020 21:48

People after my own heart ! Just catching up on this lovely thread. Can I ask for your trouser recommendations? I find jeans very uncomfortable as I have a small waist and generous legs I can’t wait to take them off. I wear Robell trousers. So comfy. Sometimes I feel a little too much of an old lady in them. I’m 45. Open to your lovely recommendations. Off to the shops tomorrow for badedas and lavender essential oil.

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/06/2020 21:59

@Twenty2

I've thought of something my nana used to drink; Rose's lime cordial. I've just put a bottle in my online trolley!
@Twenty2 add a generous shake of Angostura Bitters ( more old lady stuff!) to a large slug of the lime cordial. Top with soda water Add ice cubes. Delicious and so refreshingly astringent!
katseyes7 · 24/06/2020 22:14

Oooh, l've just remembered, l have some gorgeous J Herbin violet ink. And it smells of violets. Beautiful! And a very flamboyant purple quill pen to use with it.

Kaathesnake · 24/06/2020 23:16

I keep a diary... and have about 4 ink pens, my favourite is my Waterman that writes so lovely. I also love letter writing, hardly anyone does it anymore. I still have my late Dhs love letters to me when we were courting. All I get in the post now are bills and junk mail🙁

Twenty2 · 24/06/2020 23:49

That sounds very grown-up @BoreOfWhabylon! I imagine it is very refreshing.

Destroyedpeople · 24/06/2020 23:50

Ooh are ink pens old lady...? Cool..that means I have been there since I was about 12.....
Just acquired a lovely Lamy cartridge pen and am excited about buying a fountain pen converter and a bottle of black Lamy ink....
In the kitchen I have a range of old lady items like baking tins and pudding basins and Pyrex dishes ....charity shops are wonderful places ...

Kaathesnake · 25/06/2020 00:14

@Destroyedpeople
I love a Lamy pen, one of mine has a wide nib, it’s writes almost like calligraphy. I think ink pens must be old lady, as the youngsters at my work had barely any idea what I was talking about!!
Some of my baking tins are my grans! Way better than some modern stuff!! My ‘egg boiling’ pan must be older than the planet... I never boil eggs in anything else. It feels nice to be using tins that are so old and still as good as ever. When I left my childhood home (when I got married), the tins came in the front of the removal van with me... no way they were getting lost!

OntheWaves40 · 25/06/2020 00:17

Condensed milk sandwiches? Shock 🤢

FrameyMcFrame · 25/06/2020 00:22

Watch Inspector Morse while knitting and enjoying some jelly fruits or mint creams

My perfect evening in (45)

Destroyedpeople · 25/06/2020 00:57

@Kaathesnake....mine just has the standard nib..but what a lovely smooth flow! Will try the wide nib when I get the ink etc....

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 25/06/2020 01:08

Oh actually all my interests are listed here.

I've just spent hours working out what shrub roses to order online.

I smelled about 60 different types today and none were quite right.

Kaathesnake · 25/06/2020 01:42

@Destroyedpeople

I got my Lamy from Amazon, the wide-nib pen is around £14/15 I think. I hate scratchy thin nib pens!

BigBadVoodooHat · 25/06/2020 03:03

Ah yes, a proper pen! 😊

I’ve got around 15 fountain pens!
I favour a Waterman with Herbin Gris Nuage ink, but I’ve got a nice ‘flowy’ Lamy that I’ve been using recently.

A horribly scratchy TWSBI that cost a fortune is one of my most disappointing purchases of all time 😢

Kaathesnake · 25/06/2020 03:52

@BigBadVoodooHat
15 pens??? I thought I was bad.. Respect to you👌
I daren’t go near John Lewis’s pen counter😱 I do love my Waterman... but I’m also very fond of this new Lamy✍️ I had my dream job years ago.. working in a stationary shop... oh! the pens, the inks, the different quality papers and envelopes...I’m sure I’m from a different era😃
Funnily enough, my brother always wrote with a proper pen... and would always refuse a biro.

CountryCob · 25/06/2020 06:58

Yes especially to @Toilenstripes

Boiledeggandtoast · 25/06/2020 07:54

What a lovely thread - may I join you please?

At the weekend I picked 1 lb of gooseberries from my garden and made gooseberry fool. I'm hoping to pick the rest this afternoon.

I'm also a fan of Roget & Gallet soaps, particularly the Jean-Marie Farina mentioned upthread.

ppeatfruit · 25/06/2020 08:02

Mitzik proper ginger beer Grin Grin

I LOVE ginger beer (I make a lovely non alk. ginger beer punch). I was looking in a HF shop for DM and noticed when reading the ingredients of 5 different types, that they ALL had bleedin' CHILLI in them!!!! I have never put chilli in my ginger beer, it's sooo unnecesary what's the matter with people nowadays? (she says in classic old lady stylee!)

ppeatfruit · 25/06/2020 08:09

I am listening to Round The Horn on Radio 4 Extra as I type! I like some of the classic comedies, not all of them though! Thank goodness for R4Ex.!

I watch T.V. sewing (repairing old bath mats, clothes etc.) eating fruit (not sweets , my teeth need to kept good, they're my own Grin )

BardyMum · 25/06/2020 08:10

Has anybody mentioned A Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady yet?

Mine are still aspirational for now but having milk and a newspaper delivered daily, polishing furniture to have a beeswax smell in the house, eating small meals more frequently and eating nothing in between, much of what is eaten being home grown: (tea in bed, then breakfast (cereal or toast and jam), elevenses (coffee, biscuit or if you had friends over, coffee and walnut cake), lunch (home made soup, hot bread roll, cheese, apple) tea (in a pit obviously, eaten with a sandwich and a slice of cake), pre dinner G&T with nibbles, supper (with a apple-based pudding after). Storing fruit you grew or found (apples! blackberries, rhubarb, gooseberries) making home made jam and marmalade. Making Christmas cake and pudding. Covering food with a plate not cling film or foil. Knitting jumpers for the family. Radio plays and concerts. Playing piano as entertainment for others. Knowing who your GP is and having the same one for years. Keeping rubber bands together in a big rubber band ball.

Things I won’t be bringing back: talcum powder, washing with flannels, polishing shoes every night. Coach tours for group holidays. The horrible taste of old silver on the posh cutlery. Having sets of crockery and cutlery kept for best. Hostess trolleys, ironing bedclothes and everything else, taking the clothes pegs off the line every time they’re not being used. Small ice cubes. Sewing own clothes. Being a bit uncomfortable with make up and ear piercings or hair dye. Using a letter opener. Chocolate is something that comes in a box and comes out on special occasions. Liqueur chocolates. Round robin letters at Christmas.
