To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

LivingMyVestLife · 23/06/2020 11:31

I haven't enjoyed a thread this much since the cosy audiobooks one the other week. I feel happy just reading it!

ILoveIkea · 23/06/2020 12:35

Poirot
Midsommer murders
Reruns of Tales of the Unexpected
Putting my dressing gown on to potter around the house.

ILoveIkea · 23/06/2020 12:37

Oh yeah drinking out of pretty bone china..but I've liked that since I was a child.

woodhill · 23/06/2020 12:38

Yes. The lido is great but too many people went there recently so it got closed

alwaysreadyforablether · 23/06/2020 14:12

I must really be an old lady because I didn't even realise some of these were old lady things!
Petticoats/slips - if your skirt isn't lined then surely you need one?
Washing powder - I've also used a big box of washing powder, never even tried liquid or pods
Pop socks - I'm at work today wearing wide leg trousers and flat form brogues. What else should I wear on my feet? Socks would look weird!

Oh and I spend hours watching location location location

I like the sound of the showers gels. Can you link the website please!

pinkyboots1 · 23/06/2020 15:27

Poofing up cushions on the sofa, fleece blankets, slippers with firm soles, zoflora, buying Christmas presents in June and definitely triumph Doreen

Wallpaper, especially Sanderson back catalogue stuff. I have a 1930s reproduction called Swallows. Silk lampshades. Standard lamps, bedside rugs. Eating at the table, with no devices.Mashed potato made with lots of butter. Porridge with Demerara and clotted cream. Sylvac. Wooden furniture in brown. Fresh flowers and honesty dried for winter.
But I also can’t do big knickers. I like a medium coverage, preferably cotton.

Obviously I can't vouch for any of them yet as I've only just ordered them, but fingers crossed and let's compare old lady notes! Grin

Lola001 · 23/06/2020 16:53

The excitement I have just felt at being in a Ringtons door stop area is real.
I am a definite old lady, always have been and happy too!

PrivateSpidey · 23/06/2020 17:24

Cosy audiobooks thread you say?! How did I miss that?! Must investigate.

Bioprepper · 23/06/2020 17:32

i hate you all Grin i've just listened to a sample of a miss reads book (never heard if them before) and i felt so relaxed and am now tempted to get one on audio. I also ordered some violet creams and a word search book off amazon

They are lovely. You'll get to know all the characters - Mrs Pringle, Minnie, Joseph Coggs - and they are so easy to visualise, even without the lovely line drawings in the books.

But getting physical copies is better.

AdaColeman · 23/06/2020 17:46

Oh don’t hate us Bio, have a sherry in a pretty glass, you’ll soon feel better! Smile Smile

Cattermole · 23/06/2020 17:47

Also Elizabeth Goudge (The Little White Horse etc) for serious vintage comfort reads...

Studycast · 23/06/2020 17:51

seed cake
a refined thin "lip" on my drinking cup or mug

PrivateSpidey · 23/06/2020 17:53

Oh yes I love Elizabeth Goudge. The Dean's Watch is my favourite, lovely book.

yellowbluebell · 23/06/2020 18:00

Popping into The Edinburgh Woollen Mill on a girls weekend away (not in Edinburgh) to see if they had any nice new blouses in stock was a moment when I realised I was unusual Confused, I told the other girls I'd need them in the cocktail bar after I'd had a browse.

yellowbluebell · 23/06/2020 18:00

Meet them

Oh thank goodness, I thought I was alone!
SerendipitySunshine · 23/06/2020 18:17

Sanderson wallpaper is a fabulous shout. I love big flowery wallpaper with old wooden furniture.

Cattermole · 23/06/2020 18:43

@Bluesparkled and @PrivateSpidey I am presently re-reading the Eliots of Damerosehay trilogy again.
I remember reading The Bird In The Tree when I was in the process of leaving my XH and I found it intensely comforting.
