To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Flannelette sheets - yes!
Brushed cotton PJs
Bavarian (or vanilla) slice
Fortnum & Mason royal blend loose tea
Tunnocks tea cakes
Blanket over the knees (used to keep one in the office Blush)
Gardening books
Madeira cake

I don't think these are old lady things. They are just nice, enjoyable relaxing things and old ladies have it sussed.

Hot toddies on cold days. My grandma made fabulous and very strong ones.

She had a huge pantry too, with everything in old icecream tubs and jam jars with her lovely writing on.

Also, china cups you can see light through with a mismatched but well suited saucer. What I'd give for one more cup of tea with her.

Warm milk with a teaspoon of demerara sugar and sprinkle of cinnamon.
Rice pudding dotted with butter and dusted with grated nutmeg.

Oh god, i’m Obviously late, and haven’t read all the replies yet, but I will, I love old lady things, I am in my 30s.
My favourites:
-Rose talcum powder from m&s
-Most underwear from m&s (always slightly embarrassed when browsing big cotton knickers in store, pretending i’m just casually looking and I am really there by mistake, and it’s like the first time ever I have been in the granny knicker isle)
-Nylon socks
-grey,beige, cream, brown, preferably all roll necks and cashmere, but I will take anything as long as it’s a neutral granny colour
-love a pearl nail polish
-I buy the white company nighties, I am a size 6/8, and their small nightie is more like a 12/14 so perfect size for me to look and feel so comfy, baggy and ‘classy’. Husband complains
-beige vests to go under anything! With a nice lace insert. So oldy worldly glamour
-rose gold and rubies combo. LOVE
-while browsing agent provocateur sale, the only thing I found for me was the talcum powder with this amazing cute bow, and the container looks like from the 50’s
-hate all them current fashionable perfumes, Chanel coco/no 5 all the way, and for the next level cloud of grandma/soap/odlschool cologne I have got a few bottles of cacharel anais anais, and elisabeth Taylor white diamonds. Both £15

Harveys Bristol Cream, Ponds Cold Cream, bath cubes, woolly socks, Fry’s Turkish Delight, note let sets, embroiders hankies. All marvellous.

BananasBananas · 23/06/2020 01:54

Thanks Mitzi and Kojolo.
I'm going to have to try them now 😁😁😁

Kaathesnake · 23/06/2020 03:14

YY to
Lavender ( I spray a diluted version in my living room).
Bars of soap, Imperial Leather or Dove (I miss Lifebouy!)
Badedas Bath foam & Vosene shampoo
A nice smelling talcum powder
The soothing effects of a lovely bath.
Tea from a pot - don’t bother at home but really love it in cafes and hotels
New series of Midsomer, Vera, Agatha Raisin etc - I plan a whole evening (including what chocolate I’ll be eating) round it, just so I’m nice and settled ready.
Electric blankets, hot water bottles, decent bed linen and being warm in bed. I use the dog and various fleeces downstairs.
Less ‘fast fashion’ and more durable clothes. I love a decent coat, that does what it’s meant to!!
Avoiding being cold, wet, uncomfortable or bored when out. Old ladies tend to be choosy as to what they’ll attend... I’ve noticed I’m getting like that now!
The simple joy of toast😃

I’m in my mid50s😮

Kaathesnake · 23/06/2020 03:21

Oh, forgot to add... poking round garden centres (I can’t and don’t garden) with particular interest in their gift shops... shortbread (an old lady biscuit if ever there was!) oh, so much shortbread, sweets in tins, jams, curds, chutneys, notelet’s, cards, China mugs, slabs of cake... and all next to the .... Cafe!!! What joy😃

Kaa, we still get lifebouy soap, so I'm sure you would be able to find it at the South African shop. There is quite a vast range but the original red one is still around.

I should add in trays. I have one that has polystyrene underneath so it fits to my lap perfectly. I have quite a collection of trays and I use them. I'm quite upset as I had a wooden one with handles which I used the most. And it's dissappeared. I have no clue where it could have gone.

ChaToilLeam · 23/06/2020 07:44

Hats, gloves and costume jewellery. I still have lots inherited from my grandma. And always, red lipstick.

Imissmoominmama · 23/06/2020 08:27

I’ve just had a hip replacement (I’m early 50s)- do I win?Wink

Also, my cat is my best friend. DH and the children know this and accept their lesser status.

I have been coveting a set of four teacups with different wild flowers on, in our local charity shop, and also a beautiful 1950s style dress. They’ve been in the window since the start of lockdown. The shop reopens on Thursday- I’ll be there!

There are five wonderful charity shops on our small high street; one has lots of wool and big jars of buttons- I have spent many hours in there.

As mentioned earlier- rose and violet creams,Tio Pepe sherry, and also elderflower and rose presse- my favourite summer drink. The cafe at the animal rescue I volunteer at has a pistachio and rose water cake- it is THE best cake in the world.

Oh, and I love wild swimming. No costume, no problem- I’ll go in in my underwear. The best thing about ‘old ladies’ is they have often ceased to care what people think!

SerendipitySunshine · 23/06/2020 08:35

Outdoor swimming. I wish we'd kept some of our lidos. I had great times with my grandparents there, all art deco glamour. Freezing but beautiful, and on a rare hot day they were paradise.

Canklesforankles · 23/06/2020 08:44

Thought of you lot this morning as I donned my shower cap 😆

IntermittentParps · 23/06/2020 09:15

I've ordered some violet shower gel, and some in verbena, from a lovely Greek beauty website off the back of this thread!

And I'd forgotten, but I secretly love The Lady magazine. They still have ads for 'live-in staff' in the back. And readers write in about their fond memories of when Lady Whatsit said such a gracious hello to them at the village fete in 1964.

Can someone explain talc to me? Why do you use it, what does it do?

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 23/06/2020 09:20

Inspired by this thread, I bought a long white cotton nightie from Marks! It is so comfy.

I chased the children around pretending to be a ghost in it this morning, too.

Almahart · 23/06/2020 09:26

Has no one mentioned Fenjal yet?! I love that stuff

SerendipitySunshine · 23/06/2020 09:29

I want The Lady magazine now you suggest it!

I'm curious about talc too. I only use it in my sandals on holiday. Can we have a masterclass please?

The big lacy knickers I ordered after reading this thread just arrived. My word they are comfortable! An alternative to my usual baggy cotton ones (which DH calls 'apple catchers'). They look good too.

This thread has been my wishlist - so many things I now want to try. I do hope there isnt a run on lavender and cross your heart bras after this. I'm tempted by a long-line bra too. And silk stockings!

katseyes7 · 23/06/2020 09:30

Ohhh this thread is divine!

Home made cakes, especially chocolate or lemon drizzle.
Cream teas. Heaven on a plate!
Lovely tea shops. lt's not the same at home.
l'm another one who has a burgeoning wool stash. Love knitting and crocheting, and just about any kind of crafts. l have a room full of the stuff.
Comfy shoes - l love my Fitflops and Birkenstocks.
Lovely bed linen. lt has to be white, then everything matches.
My electric blanket for the colder months.
Sofa naps. With my lovely heavy throw, l'm asleep in minutes.

Rose and violet perfumes.
Bedsocks, nearly all year round. l have the coldest toes ever.
'Gentle' tv programmes and books. Love Miss Read.
My new hip! lt's four years old in August.
Turkish delight.
Porridge.
Chocolate Brazils.

The only thing l cannot bear are big knickers in any shape or form. Even the 'boy shorts' make me too hot.

Stellakent · 23/06/2020 09:33

Serendipitysunshine We have a lido close to where I live in London. I love it. Not open at the moment, sadly.

CorianderLord · 23/06/2020 09:40

I'm 25 I've been old for years - comfy pants, non wired bras, my jeans are stretchy and several sizes too big.

I even have magnifying glass clip ons which attach to my glasses for my sewing.

Frauhubert · 23/06/2020 09:48

Did i mention trousers/pants with elasticated waist?

SerendipitySunshine · 23/06/2020 09:50

I love homemade jam, marmalade and chutney in mismatched jars. Best with a circle of fabric, cut with pinking shears, and an elastic band. Heavenly!

Bioprepper · 23/06/2020 11:17

oh but they do still sell teasmades @Drogonssmile here
shop.swan-brand.co.uk/collections/teasmades?min_price=69.99&max_price=79.99&sort_by=availability

as for m&s cotton nighties, they are the best! My 13 year old dd takes the piss and says i look like a victorian ghost in my white one lol. im also rocking pop socks today in 'natural tan'
