To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

You are all my people. Although in my late 50's I probably am an old lady
I am now reading My Weekly. (No celeb gossip, just good old fashioned recipes, patterns, stories etc)
I have a good wool stash. It's as much fun buying it as the actual knitting/crochet.
Battenburg cake .
Lavender pillow mist
Brooches on my coats and a nice set of pearls with matching earrings.
I love an afternoon tea in an old fashioned tearoom with China cups and saucers. After lockdown we should share photos. it would be fabulous.

I got a little touch of sunburn on the decolletage (?) area the other week so I got myself a some lovely calamine lotion that still comes in a brown glass bottle just like it jolly well should. Ooh the smell of it!

WoollyMollyMonkey · 22/06/2020 19:54

I’ve got one of those too KittCat - it’s got cats on it!

Onthebrink67 · 22/06/2020 20:42

LadyofMisrule · 22/06/2020 20:43

Port and lemon
A little drop of Madeira, in a beautiful 1920s glass.

Home made seed cake
Bedsocks
Endeavour, Midsomer Murders, Foyle's War, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
Going to bed with a thermos of coffee so I can have one hot in the morning.
Growing vegetables
Gardeners' Question Time on the Wireless
Garibaldi biscuits
Cotton handkerchiefs
A shopping trolley
The Telegraph crossword (I buy them in books so I don't have to buy the crappy right wing newspaper)
My Picquot ware teapot.

And thanks to you lot, I've just bought a new bra and some 4711 bar soap.

Sarahb1969 · 22/06/2020 20:46

Loving this thread. Makes me realise I've been an old lady most of my life! And definitely not ashamed.

May I suggest a Croft Particular sherry. Drier than an original, but not a Tio Pepe. DH and I enjoy a glass quite often. Normally to be found only in Waitrose or Sainsbury's - shopping with a larger range of alcoholic nectar.

I am an Avon rep and can confirm that some of their older lady style perfumes are very popular - especially with the not quite such old ladies! Bubble bath is also very popular, especially in lavender or lily. I became an Avon rep as mine was moving on, couldn't lose my supply of all things old lady Blush

Purple is one of my favourite colours Grin

CathyorClaire · 22/06/2020 20:54

@fatted

Pond’s Cold Cream?

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/06/2020 21:14

Guido. I get huge jars from Amazon. They last for ages.
www.amazon.co.uk/Ponds-Cold-Cream-Cleanser-9-5oz/dp/B000NT2EO8?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Rub over face. Tissue off. Do it again and remove with hot flannel. Makes my face all velvety.

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/06/2020 21:15

That's if I'm wearing make up. Otherwise it's just proper soap and water. Followed with Nivea from blue jar.

BigBadVoodooHat · 22/06/2020 21:24

Ah, I’ve found my tribe

Badedas bath gelee. Tea from a tea pot. The biggest knickers I can find. Pears soap (sometimes Imperial Leather). Non-wired bras. Hot water bottle and a proper vest in winter. 😊

nannykatherine · 22/06/2020 21:26

Lily of the valley and rose everything including rose water
Nivea night cream

My gran would have been happy at my house Grin Although she would probably prefer more gloves involved.

BigBadVoodooHat · 22/06/2020 21:28

Oh yes, Agatha Christie. Never ever tire of a bit of Marple.

RedLemon · 22/06/2020 21:29

@LadyofMisrule have you got a recipe for seed cake? I’ve never tried it and you’ve put the longing on me.

I’m currently sitting beshawled in my rocking chair- knitting is stowed in the pocket of said chair and I’m about to get stuck into Persuasion by the wonderful Miss Austen😌

Drogonssmile · 22/06/2020 21:37

How have I not seen this thread before?!!

These are ALL my favourite things!

Also:
Victorian style white cotton nighties
Ginormous pants
Gravy made from scratch
A runner bean slicer
Flannelette sheets in the winter
Excess cats
Lavender
Hot water bottles and or electric blankets
Hotter slippers
Skechers go walk

I really really wish they still made teasmaids (does anyone else remember them?)

I'm 38 Smile

Drogonssmile · 22/06/2020 21:38

Oh and I've just bought some crochet hooks and yarn to learn crochet via YouTube!

OldLace · 22/06/2020 22:22

I think I officially went 'Old Lady' when the Vicar popped round to welcome me to the village when I moved in, (but again after I had a baby, which is less Old Lady-ish)

I agree, it is not so much Old Lady things but Proper Things of Quality and Substance.

So, Earl Grey in a pot with cosy and bone china cups: tick.
Home made fruit and lemon drizzle and victoria sponge.
Home made Jams, lemon curd and chutney.
Home made sloe gin.
Plant and bulb catalogues.
Yes to an electric blanket and proper wool blankets with satin edges.
Bar soap (Pears for everyday and Italian ones for my clothes drawers)
Tweed, Barbour, silk scarves (since my 20's but I am a carrot cruncher). Dogs. Volvo's. Proper picnics with linen and Thermos.
Galleries, concerts, Church.
Chanel no 5 if i can afford it, but floral / rose perfume if not.
My large welsh dresser (and my china collection) is a joy to me
Ditto my growing collection of fine linen embroidered samplers (some of which I have made)
Proper photo albums
MANNERS!

OldLace · 22/06/2020 22:29

Ooooh: HATS = YES!

I LOVE hats. I sometimes find wondrous ones in charity shops.
I rarely have opportunity to wear the more outlandish ones so I wear them at home. My 12 year old Dd thinks I'm potty.

My Ds helped me up (I have mobility problems) the other day and said: 'oh, your hands have gone like Grandmas - all soft and mushy'.
Great! (I'm just approaching 50). I squeezed him HARD = he relented.

katseyes7 · 22/06/2020 22:33

@wildthingsinthenight l had nearly all the Miss Read books and l gave them to the charity shop when l was moving house.
l'm still kicking myself eight years on. l wish l'd kept them!

I think of Miss Read books as a warm hug.

Saturday afternoon war films and musicals.

Just at the start of DP's conversion into Little Old Man, he took me to see an outdoor screening of Singin' In The Rain, having never seen it himself.

And then asked what other musicals or films I thought he'd like.

On The Town is his favourite musical and Arsenic & Old Lace his favourite film (after his 80s ones).

PrivateSpidey · 22/06/2020 23:02

I agree with PPs, I've liked this sort of stuff all my life. Eg as a teenager I loved clubbing and gigs, but also watching Cadfael while drinking tea and eating Rich Tea biscuits. It's a state of mind Grin

Does anyone else like Clarnico mint creams? They're up there with raspberry ruffles for me.
