To realise I like old lady things

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Great thread. I have been embracing the granny since the mid 90s when I would buy Prima magazine (which was for ancient old fossils) and Woman's Weekly for the knitting patterns. I was just out of uni. Where do you old ladies get your crispy cotton nighties from? I crave one but many look itchy over the boob area.

I just looked up Penelope Keith. She was 35 when she started playing Margo. 16 years younger than I am now and I’m holding her up as an old lady icon Shock

I think a binge watch of To The Manor Born - if it’s available anywhere - might be in order.

Ooooh I had forgotten brooches!!

Tollergirl · 21/06/2020 12:39

@Floisme - is your coat vintage? The reason I am toying with the idea of vintage clothing is just that I am always in awe of the cut and fit of the clothes. Not so much that I want to live in those days. I appreciate the functionality of many modern clothes but am always captivated by the set of a sleeve, beautiful pleats, or the drape of a skirt or cut of a dress whenever I watch a period drama. I do wonder about the comfort factor but just think the women (and men for that matter) look so damned elegant.

I will accept Bristol Cream (and have been known to indulge) but my first choice will always be Croft (blame my mother). Am afraid I am I don't remember the adverts though @Twenty2 - can you enlighten me?

@woodhill

twenty we used to have those china cups and tea set in our home economics kitchens in the 80s - oh the infamous yellow China

Yes, it was sold as utility ware, most definitely not posh. The yellow Jasmine is the rarer colour, though and the breakfast-size cups and saucers in particular can go for a decent amount on eBay.

Crystallised ginger.

Tollergirl · 21/06/2020 12:56

What-ho @Twenty2!!!😁

Zebracat · 21/06/2020 13:03

Pirelli slippers, tartan with a pom-pom. Rhubarb. Country walks. Town parks. Paper bags. Cuddles.

onlinelinda · 21/06/2020 13:18

I'm amused to see cardigans on the list. I have a dozen at least, and have for years 😄

frugalkitty · 21/06/2020 13:30

Please stop mentioning things with pistachio in them....I love, love, love pistachio but it doesn't love me and I can't eat it, sob.

I'm really enjoying reading this thread, and I'm finding myself nodding along as I read. Perfect Sunday reading.

Egghead68 · 21/06/2020 13:40

Turkish Delight

Destroyedpeople · 21/06/2020 13:53

Pears soap
Euthymol toothpaste
Frys peppermint creme
Damask tablecloths
Tins to keep useful items in

Floisme · 21/06/2020 13:53

Tollergirl it was an immensely fortunate charity shop buy - not many clues as to its age but I would estimate about 20-30 years old. So vintage but not from the true Miss Marple era, sadly.

Oh my, your crockery is devine!
All I have are mismatched Tesco's mugs.....

wildthingsinthenight · 21/06/2020 14:12

This thread is really cheering me up! I love it.
I am a big fan of Margot Leadbetter and Barbara Good. I love to binge watch The Good Life and To The Manor Born with tea and cake on the side under a blanket.
This thread is just what we need at a time like this ❤

GiGi18 · 21/06/2020 14:19

I love the little rose scented sachets you put in drawers or hang in wardrobes, Pears soap, and a late afternoon game of cards with a sherry. I'm 32! I also cook a lot of things the old fashioned way, like using suet for making stuffing and dumplings.

flirtygirl · 21/06/2020 14:20

We don't call them old lady knickers but normal knickers in my family. Every age wears them. Surely it's a mindset if you think wearing them ages you.

MulberryPeony · 21/06/2020 14:46

Surprised to see pears soap mentioned so frequently. My first boy friend used it so I associate it with teen hormones Shock

AiryFairyMum · 21/06/2020 14:56

To The Manor Born! Is it on Netflix or Amazon? I loved that one.

Pears soap is the smell of my Grannie’s bathroom. Sadly they were bought out, and the soap is no longer aged in the proper way , so it is softer and hardly lasts any time at all. The bars are also thinner, and the scent has changed.
And don’t get me started on Bendick’s Bittermints changing their beautiful boxes to the crappy ones they have now.

woodhill · 21/06/2020 15:28

We used to call them granny knickers, granted I was 12 at the time😊

woodhill · 21/06/2020 15:33

@Twenty2

That's interesting, remember the green as well often in church halls.

The schools no longer teaches home economics so someone may have adopted it

Imissmoominmama · 21/06/2020 15:35

I love the scent of lavender. I also enjoy knitting, doing crosswords and listening to the radio with my cat on my knee.

My favourite chocolates are rose and violet creams.

Last weekend I got drunk with friends and swam in the river in my underwear. If I’m going to be an old lady, I’ll be a mildly disgraceful one Wink.

Imissmoominmama · 21/06/2020 15:36

Yes to sherry too, but I’m a Tio Pepe drinker.
