To realise I like old lady things

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

Early 40s and still prefer stockings and suspenders to tights, unless it is really cold.

Floisme · 21/06/2020 10:41

Tollergirl I don't do the full vintage look but I love tweed and it's nothing to do with nostalgia, I just think it's a beautiful fabric. The same goes for waxed cotton.

I was beyond rage when it was reported that Jennifer Garner - who wasn't even 40 at the time - had been cast as Miss Marple. But I don't think the film every saw the light of day so I guess they came to their senses

Twenty2 · 21/06/2020 10:42

@Tollergirl

Can I join please? This thread has cheered me up immensely and I qualify for so many of these and can see I'm not alone especially when my DC laugh at me decanting the milk into a China milk jug.

However I am distraught at the thought of sherry going the same way as gin or prosecco. I have been drinking sherry since my teens (or actually longer as my mother recently admitted that she used to put it on my dummy when I was teething!). I am not supposed to drink alcohol these days due to medication for arthritis (how much more old lady can you get) but always have a small sherry on Sunday before Countryfile and Antiques Road show, out of a proper sherry glass of course.

P S My feminist icon is Miss Marple- she always let the the men think they knew what they were doing whilst running mental rings around them. Pure class!

What brand-preference do you have for sherry, Tollergirl? I bought some dry sherry for Christmas and it wasn't very nice, it had a funny aftertaste.
Canklesforankles · 21/06/2020 10:43

msrinky you are welcome Grin

I have ordered some and I’m hopeful. Our local bra shop has a very enthusiastic fitter who insists I should have 32 even though I keep telling her that I have triumph 34s at home. Of course the underwired 32s are like razor wire on my ribs on the drive home from work.

Now I’m going to hoist up my big girl very big knickers and not let her do the that to me again. They are reopening Monday and doing “fitting by eye” so I will hide from her. Or go to a different shop!

LanternHill · 21/06/2020 10:43

@Floisme Me too- as played by Joan Hickson? My favourite winter coat is a Harris tweed coat that I refer to as my 'Miss Marple'Wink

Floisme · 21/06/2020 10:47

I have a Harris Tweed coat too Lantern - it's the single best thing about winter. There's another poster who has one that belonged to her father - don't know is she's on here?

MothMurder · 21/06/2020 10:55

A National Trust visit is my idea of heaven - you will have to physically tear me from the gift shop.
A long walk, calling in at the garden centre on the way home - ditto.
Any old movies - especially if they involve Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and ostrich feather dresses.
I fantasise about cream teas in pretty locations.
I will only wear comfy clothes now. Have just bough a selection of loungewear from Uniqlo and it's BLISS.

MothMurder · 21/06/2020 11:04

Oh yes - and I will watch anything that is set during World War 2.

MsRinky · 21/06/2020 11:05

Oh, I have the loveliest tweed coat. I must stop eating so many cakes so that I can fit into it come winter.

I am on the brink of old ladydom as I’m 60 this year. I’m have a mixture of old lady likes mixed with current trends : sloggi knickers, heated throw, electric blanket, heated pad for localised aches, loungewear, One Man and his Dog, The Repair Shop, Countryfile, looking through damart and other little catalogues you get with papers and magazines, carpet, talc, lavender, craft fairs, country fairs, WI member, microbladed brows. Jumpsuits, followIng beauty, hair and fashion bloggers.

Tollergirl · 21/06/2020 11:18

@Twenty2 - Croft Original all the way. It's sweet but you only have a small glass - it's like Mothers milk to me!

Floisme · 21/06/2020 11:23

Harveys Bristol Cream is the only true sherry. I know this for a fact because my mum used to say so.

idontsmokeivape · 21/06/2020 11:30

brooches
handkerchiefs
folding hand fans
proper loose tea
handmade cat-themed clocks
knee-length skirts

idontsmokeivape · 21/06/2020 11:31

oh, and Four in a Bed

Twenty2 · 21/06/2020 11:47

Thanks @Tollergirl. Croft sherry may be a step too far for me, though; I remember the adverts in the 70s!

dudsville · 21/06/2020 11:51

I'm place marking so I can read properly later, but for now I'd like to say thanks re the Doreen. I've ordered some. I've always chosen an underwire. I'm looking forward to feeling comfortable!

Vebrithien · 21/06/2020 11:51

Knitting

New knitting needles (KnitPro symfonie, I'm looking at you!

Ginormous knickers

A good book, with some classic music on in the background and a cup of proper coffee in a bone china cup and saucer with a shortbread biscuit or two.

Long hair up in a muted Edwardian style

Cream teas. All the family love them. I've even send a cream tea in the post for my parents wedding anniversary this coming week. Send a cider cream tea to my BIL for his birthday, just after lockdown started. They looked amazing, when they arrived

woodhill · 21/06/2020 11:58

Real convert to radio 2 particularly Elaine Paige and Sounds of the 70s

Perfect

woodhill · 21/06/2020 12:03

twenty we used to have those china cups and tea set in our home economics kitchens in the 80s - oh the infamous yellow China

AdaColeman · 21/06/2020 12:05

Gonzalez Byass and Lustau are two reliable Sherry producers to look out for.

Binterested · 21/06/2020 12:07

Miss Marple is not my style icon. Mine is Margo Leadbeater. I would actually love to wear a turban or a headscarf like she does.

To realise I like old lady things
Binterested · 21/06/2020 12:10

Also flowery wallpaper. Drapey clothes in a crepey fabric. Marcasite brooches - possibly in a lizard shape.

GracieLane · 21/06/2020 12:14

Big pants & Early nights are the ones I am fully embracing!
Oh and not wearing high heals ever for any reason.

I find myself getting excited about having enough pockets in things. So pockets. Buy all the pockets.

Lavender, rose and geranium scented anything. Especially soaps. I really love bar soap.

SerendipitySunshine · 21/06/2020 12:24

Ooh White Company cashmere bed socks are on my Christmas list every year. Lovely soft grey jersey PJs too. This thread has given me so many ideas, thank you.

SerendipitySunshine · 21/06/2020 12:26

Love Margot Leadbetter. I wish I had her formidable stare.
