Which is the tastiest Protestant traybake?

1000 replies

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 17:35

NI Protestants are famed for their tray bakes but which is the best traybake of all?

I’m thinking something crunchy and chocolatey, a tiffin like thing. But are there unchocolatey traybakes that I just haven’t been exposed to? Are they keeping all the best recipes to themselves, strictly to be eaten behind closed doors?

And does it get a bit competitive? Does Annie cast aspersions on Doris’ traybaking abilities?

I don't know what tablet is. So I'm going to stick my neck out and say that it's not a thing in N Ireland.

LadyGregorysToothbrush · 08/03/2019 21:52

My favourite was Donegore garden centre!

Scissor · 08/03/2019 21:52

I do not have any shape or clue why you are titling your post so weird.. and it's still standing... How the holy fuck does making shit cake in a tray equal your religion

isabellerossignol · 08/03/2019 21:54

I miss Donegore. It was lovely at Christmas time. And the car park was on such a steep hill that every time I stepped out of the car I nearly fell over!

PierreBezukov · 08/03/2019 21:54

Yes Donegore was in the top league of garden centres.

PierreBezukov · 08/03/2019 21:55

I know what tablet is but it's not nice and it's not Norn Irish. Grin Scottish, I believe.

isabellerossignol · 08/03/2019 21:56

Do you know what else N Ireland Protestants can't get enough of? Shloer

mrsfeatherbottom · 08/03/2019 21:57

@PierreBezukov Chinese Chews! So good (so much sugar!) A family favourite here.

IPokeBadgers · 08/03/2019 21:57

PierreBezukov Chinese Chews!!!

That's brought back some very happy memories....my very Protestant Nana used to make these....haven't had them in about 20+ years. Don't suppose you have a recipe?

3out · 08/03/2019 21:57

Not nice?! But it’s just pure sugar, how can that ever be bad? 😂

fivedogstofeed · 08/03/2019 21:57

It just does, and like a lot of things in Northern Ireland there is no point in trying to change our minds Grin

mrsfeatherbottom · 08/03/2019 21:57

We call Shloer 'Christian Wine'!

mrsfeatherbottom · 08/03/2019 21:58

@IPokeBadgers - I have my granny's Chinese Chew recipe somewhere - will dig it out.

fivedogstofeed · 08/03/2019 21:58

Oh Isabelle schloer of course- so true!

isabellerossignol · 08/03/2019 21:59

I remember being taught in Baptist Sunday school that when the Bible says Jesus turned water into wine, it didn't really mean wine, it meant fruit juice Grin

FreeButtonBee · 08/03/2019 21:59

It was always Cidona in our house on Sunday - schloer only at Christmas. They ruined schloer now with sweetener. It’s rank

youllhavehadyourtea · 08/03/2019 22:00

just wondering!Grin

There's a lot of crossover with the other stuff - the snowballs and love of crushed digestives, condensed milk and dessicated coconut traybaking..... Grin

Tablet is fantastic and I love it. When my dad was dying of cancer and couldn't eat anything he could still be tempted by a bit of tablet.

3out · 08/03/2019 22:01

Has shloer always not had a c in it? Could’ve sworn it used to!

IPokeBadgers · 08/03/2019 22:01

@mrsfeatherbottom please do!
My my, Chinese Chews....the memories. Feel quite emotional 😀

Someone hasn't had their mars bar krispie cake today.

It's hard to beat a good old chocolate cornflake or rice crispie bun though.

3out · 08/03/2019 22:03

If you have coffee after your meal at a restaurant then they always serve it with a couple of bits of tablet on the side. Perfect :)

Piglet89 · 08/03/2019 22:05

@scissor you do not sound like you’re from Northern Ireland. But “shit cake”?! The majority of the rest of us ARE from NI - we’ll do the cake bigotry on here if there’s any to be done, thanks very much.

I feel a wee new recipe coming on - Backstop Bake.
