Which is the tastiest Protestant traybake?

1000 replies

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 17:35

NI Protestants are famed for their tray bakes but which is the best traybake of all?

I’m thinking something crunchy and chocolatey, a tiffin like thing. But are there unchocolatey traybakes that I just haven’t been exposed to? Are they keeping all the best recipes to themselves, strictly to be eaten behind closed doors?

And does it get a bit competitive? Does Annie cast aspersions on Doris’ traybaking abilities?

Guys, I don’t care that this is massively niche; it deserves to go into “Classics”.

Exasperatedcroc · 08/03/2019 21:26

Not a traybake and possibly not protestant but does anybody have a recipe for a NI snowball. Not the marshmallow type by the dry sponge with jam between and icing with coconut outside. It is my absolute favourite thing in the whole world and I would love to be able to make my own. I have had no luck over the years searching online for a recipe. My kids are now also addicts so I need a reliable supply.

irisheyesaresmiling7 · 08/03/2019 21:28

Yep @FiddleFaddleDingDong the DUP cookery book Grin

My dad loved chocolate and used to keep a bar in his bedroom to eat every night before bed but lost all sense of taste after chemo yet loved Johnny's Favourites which had white chocolate. Miss him soo much 😢

widgetbeana · 08/03/2019 21:28

Omg @Firstbornunicorn
Mars bar and apple sandwiches! I live in England now and occasionally make one of these. I made the mistake of taking one to work once. People near had me carted off to an asylum!
I'm so glad you mentioned it!

Here are a few from my wi and pwa cookbooks I buy whenever I find them in charity shops on trips home!

Love a good PTB (also shocked it didn't end up on the blackboard). Disclaimer - my parents actually do keep their toaster in a cupboard!!

Fifteens must be the most quintessentially Northern Irish, surely? My favourite is, however, a Malteser bun.

Scottish Snowballs (Raspberry Jam Sandwich Cookies Dipped in ...

I hope this is clicky

tenbob · 08/03/2019 21:31

Having been at the in-laws for a wake house last week, I thought I had reached Peak Traybake Knowledge but this thread is amazing
(Mint aero slices or top hats for me. And I would love to know how marshmallow sales per capita compare in NI compared to the rest of the UK. Must be off the chart?)

NI DH wants me to start a ‘what’s the best coalition sandwich’ thread but I think we can all agree it would be mars bar and apple, so I won’t

Nyancat · 08/03/2019 21:36

Exasperated do a search for snowy Joey recipes that's the ones you want. A jammie Joey is the dogs though.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 08/03/2019 21:37

Shameless placemarking...

3out · 08/03/2019 21:37

Fifteens are a Scottish staple too. Our local shop sells them, really hope they’ve got some left by tomorrow or I’m going to have to make them 😂

WrongKindOfFace · 08/03/2019 21:38

I hadn’t heard of tray bakes being a Protestant thing. We were fed quite a few of the ones mentioned, despite not being northern Irish nor Protestant. I could just a go a piece of mars bar cake right now. With a big, thick layer of melted chocolate on top, complete with fork pattern for a fancy touch.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 08/03/2019 21:40

Best thread ever Grin
Proddy neighbors did indeed make a lot of traybakes whilst the catholic’s reigned supreme in apple tart stakes.
In the spirit of togetherness and healing I give you the Aussie cherry ripe, manna from heaven or whatever you chose to believe in

Not a fan of Jamy Joeys.

Has anyone ever had Chinese chews?
MIL used to make them. Or, equally bizarre (though not a traybake) - Belgian loaf? Belgian loaf is a very light current loaf cross madeira cake and it is divine! Only ever had it at home though, and there's nothing Belgian about it lol.

SoupDragon · 08/03/2019 21:42

It's Lent, folks

Not for the atheists it isn't! I may have to resurrect Millionaire's Tiffin in celebration.

isabellerossignol · 08/03/2019 21:44

Just thought of something else that is a N Ireland classic, although not quite a traybake.

Cheesecakes. I have no idea why they are called cheesecakes because there is nothing cheese related about them. They are a little individual tart type thing with a layer of jam on the bottom and a layer of sponge cake. They're outstanding.

ichbineinstasumer · 08/03/2019 21:44

Yes elevenohfive shh, say no more or we'll find out we went to school together!

PierreBezukov · 08/03/2019 21:44

My Protestant NI granny, interestingly, didn't make any traybakes. She made soda bread, scones and apple tart though.

Harumphharagh · 08/03/2019 21:45
  1. I love The Pineapple Tart by Anne Dunlop!
  1. I love Donaghadee Garden Centre!
  1. The holywood Baptist church has the best bake off with Protestant Tray Bakes baby group ever! It’s how they lure you in, VERY effective.
Harumphharagh · 08/03/2019 21:47

Thinking about it yes, Protestants really do love garden centres a lot, we discuss which ones to go to well in advance. creative Gardens owner is on to a good thing.

weebarra · 08/03/2019 21:47

I never thought I would say this, but I have to send my (lapsed) Presbyterian mother this thread.
She does amazing millionaires, but even better mars bar cake, which I have now introduced to our PTA coffee mornings and am being genuinely accosted for the recipe!

LadyGregorysToothbrush · 08/03/2019 21:48

Garden Centre Prods was coined to refer to liberal moderate unionists who steered mostly clear of politics and preferred to go to the garden centre on Election Day.

fivedogstofeed · 08/03/2019 21:49

OMG cheesecakes - why on earth were they called that!?
Chinese chews, truly my most hated traybake. My mother made them and loved them. I couldn't see the point as they didn't even have chocolate.

Chocolatepeanuts · 08/03/2019 21:49

Ooh yes isabelle i love those too. No idea why theyre called that!

youllhavehadyourtea · 08/03/2019 21:49

Do NI folk make tablet?

PierreBezukov · 08/03/2019 21:51

True Lady Gregory - going to garden centres is actually a middle class thing. I do like a garden centre, they're particularly fun at Christmas time with all the massive Christmas decorations.
