Because they are 'that good'? I realise different songs may affect people differently Smile

I have lots:

The last part of Do the right thing, Simply Red
The last part of Light my fire, Will Young
The whole of Sandstorm, Darude
The chorus of Love Love, Take That
The chorus of The Flood, Take That
The whole of Praying for time, George Michael
The whole of Sing Hallelujah, Dr Alban
The last chorus, to the end Confusion, ELO
The last bit, to fade, Rise, Gabrielle
All of Don't You, Simple Minds
All of Shine, Years and Years
All of Paradise by the dashboard light, Meatloaf
All of Home By The Sea, Genesis

Just off the top of my head Smile

Oh, loads have come to me now

Driving with the brakes on - Del Amitri

Most things by The Smiths
Next Life - Suede
I still believe - Miss Saigon

And that Kelly Clarkson song about fathers that has made me cry like an absolute idiot the few times I've heard it:

And all I remember is your back
Walking towards the airport, leaving us all in your past
I traveled fifteen hundred miles to see you
I begged you to want me, but you didn’t want to
But piece by piece, he collected me up
Off the ground, where you abandoned things
Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me at six years old and you know
He never walks away
He never asks for money
He takes care of me
He loves me
Piece by piece, he restores my faith
That a man can be kind and the father could, stay

And all of your words fall flat
I made something of myself and now you wanna come back
But your love, it isn’t free, it has to be earned
Back then I didn’t have anything you needed so I was worthless
But piece by piece, he collected me up
Off the ground, where you abandoned things
Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me
Six years old and you know
He never walks away
He never asks for money
He takes care of me
'Cause he loves me
Piece by piece, he restored my faith
That a man can be kind and a father could, stay

Piece by piece
Piece by piece I fell far from the tree
I will never leave her like you left me
And she will never have to wonder her worth
Because unlike you I’m going to put her first and you know
He’ll never walk away,
He’ll never break her heart
He’ll take care of things, he’ll love her
Piece by piece, he restored my faith
That a man can be kind and the father should be great
Piece by piece
Piece by piece

Old and wise -Alan Parsons protect-
I will have it at played at my funeral

GinnyJumperoo · 15/01/2018 23:26

This will sound stupid but for me, it is the theme tune to Ben & Hollys Little Kingdom.

It was DD1s favourite programme when she was tiny and it reminds me of her babyhood. I struggled so much after she was born but she made me so happy at the same time.

It gives me a pain in my chest when I hear it.

Giggorata · 15/01/2018 23:32

So many... this from Comfortably Numb by the Floyd:
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb.

The whole of Shine On, You Crazy Diamond and the album Dark Side of the Moon, pretty much.
Vincent by Don McClean

Ride On by Christy Moore
the Needle and the Damage Done by Neil Young
It's Over by Roy Orbison
Without You by Nilsson
These ones are in the delivery as well as the lyrics.

And, more than anything else, ever, Gortoz a Ran by Denez Prigent and Lisa Gerrard - I can't understand a word, as it's in Breton, but I don't need to... has me in bits every time.

augustusglupe · 15/01/2018 23:32

Purple Rain - Prince
My Only Love - Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music
Save a Prayer - Duran
Angie - Rolling Stones
Betcha by golly wow - The Stylistics
The long and winding road - Diana Ross or Paul McCartney...although in his version, his voice is a bit shaky, it actually makes it better.
In Vogue - Japan
Forbidden Colours - David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky
But why
Why
Why can't it be
Why can't it be mine

also
Sloe gin, sloe gin
Tryin' to wash away the pain inside
Well, I'm sick and I'm all done in
And I'm standin' in the rain
And I feel like I'm gonna cry

to be a bit more cheerful
if the sun refused to shine,
I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea,
There will still be you and me.

Kind woman, I give you my all.
Kind woman, nothing more.

Little drops of rain
Whisper of the pain.
Tears of love lost in the days gone by.

My love is strong,
With you there is no wrong.
Together we shall go until we die.

My, my, my.

An inspiration's what you are to me.
Inspiration, look, see.

And so today my world—it smiles,
Your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done,
For you to me are the only one.

Alright, yeah

Happiness: no more be sad,
Happiness: I'm glad.

If the sun refused to shine,
I would still be loving you.
Mountains crumble to the sea,
There will still be you and me.

Lovely!

Ladies I'm loving this thread - I have kept my Alexa busy listening to a lot of these songs that I hadn't heard of before and some I had. My music library is now very full with some beautiful emotional songs.

Hugs for everyone who has suffered losses of loved ones Flowers

augustusglupe · 15/01/2018 23:40

AutumnChill Marc Almond and Dave Ball wrote Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

JeremiahBackflip · 15/01/2018 23:41

Glasvegas - Geraldine. Huge sobbing tears the first time I heard this and it catches me every time.

Snow Patrol - Set the Fire to the Third Bar

Caledonia - it reminds me of when I was feeling homesick. I sang it to DD when she was tiny and still do at night time.

Amy MacDonald - the road to home. Also listened to this when I was feeling homesick.

The Beatles - Real Love and Golden Slumbers. Sang to DS when he was just a bump. I can't quite get through the songs without a lump in my throat. I found pregnancy difficult towards my due dates both times and singing these sings reminds me if it.

There are loads more. These are just off the top if my head. I find if I connect with a song it really digs in deep.

SeaToSki · 15/01/2018 23:43

When I was pregnant with DS1 and the lead singer’s wife was also pregnant with his first. Every time I heard it it takes me back to the waiting and the love and the anticipation and then that first few hours with your newborn.

Savage Garden
Maybe it's intuition
Somethings you just don't question
Like in your eyes, I see my future in an instant
And there it goes, I think I've found my best friend
I know that it might sound
More than a little crazy but I believe
I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

JeremiahBackflip · 15/01/2018 23:46

Oh @Giggorata you reminded me of Vincent - i only really.listened to it when I was living in London for a year and was feeling really alone.

Badly Drawn Boy - the shining at the same time and place. If I listen to it now I can remember vividly being on a train from reading to London, crying because someone let me down.

Christy Moore - ride on. Straight back to a pub I used to go to with flatmates at uni.

kateskates · 15/01/2018 23:52

Kodaline 'All I Want' gets me every time:

All I want is nothing more
To hear you knocking at my door
'Cause if I could see your face once more
I could die as a happy man I'm sure
When you said your last goodbye
I died a little bit inside
I lay in tears in bed all night
Alone without you by my side
But If you loved me
Why did you leave me

CremeFresh · 15/01/2018 23:53

Folding Stars by Biffy Clyro. Written for Simon's dying mum.

"I would do anything for another minute with you". Breaks my heart

Also, On my Own from Les Mis. Sums up my life

thesunwillout · 15/01/2018 23:57

I want to cry just even thinking of how some songs make me cry lol.

Comfortably Numb Pink Floyd

Always on my mind, Esp the Pet Shop Boys one, just takes me back to when I was sad but hopeful, but now I sometimes feel sad and not very hopeful if that makes sense.

Genesis, Follow You Follow Me

John Denver, Annie's Song

Tinder sticks travelling light

Great thread, I'm off tho. X

Sam Smith Lay Me Down -

Yes I do, I believe, that one day I will be where I was, right there, right next to you

I can't even think about it without welling up, it was the song I chose for my dad when I had to plan his funeral aged 24

SparklingXmas · 16/01/2018 00:00

Mike and the mechanics the living years. Heard this after my father passed away 😢
So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that lasts
I wasn't there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

thesunwillout · 16/01/2018 00:00

Giggorata, we are united.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 16/01/2018 00:05

Dry your eyes mate by the streets used to really affect me for some reason.

More recently Lukas Graham 7 years is really powerful for me too.
And Wires by Elbow is it? About his young son who was very ill.
So many songs tug on my heartstrings.

Sparklingbrook · 16/01/2018 00:06

The lyrics to Ordinary World by Duran Duran written by Simon Le Bon after the death of his friend. 'I won't cry for yesterday'.

Hidingtonothing · 16/01/2018 00:07

Loads, two that spring immediately to mind are part of Tori Amos' Winter 'put my hand in my father's glove' because it reminds me of my GF (who was to all extents and purposes my 'dad') and all of Birdy's version of People Help the People just because it's utterly beautiful.

passthecremeeggs · 16/01/2018 00:09

The last two or so minutes of Citizen Erased by Muse. Gets me every time, Matt Bellamy's voice...

Thisnamechanger · 16/01/2018 00:10

Coldplay Everglow came out around the time my mum was dying:

"How come things move on,
How come cars don't slow,
When it feels like the end of the world.
When I should but I can't let you go..."

And the very last chorus where he goes

"What I wouldn't give for this moment to hold,
But I live for this feeling, this Everglooooooow"

And his voice starts to crack a bit.

Makes me WEEP.
