Aibu to think this doesn't make sense (behind my back)

Having an argument with Dh about this, I say the phrase "behind my back" doesn't make sense because if something was behind your back surely it would be in front of you?
I'm getting more and more irate trying to explain my point and only dogs and dolphins can hear me
Am I right?

No, it refers to Banff in Alberta, Canada.

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 15/08/2017 13:12

The wall is at my back, it's not behind my back because if it was it would be in front of me 😂😂
This makes perfect sense in my head

Good grief. I'm seriously glad I'm not your dh, I'd be banging my head repeatedly against the wall if I was! Grin
Of course the wall is behind your back, because of the very fact it is BEHIND you! Your back is part of you. How on earth can a wall behind you be in front of you?! Confused

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/08/2017 13:13

So if behind your back is infront of you, where is infront of your front??

By your definition, it would be behind you, which is completely non sensical.

tccat · 15/08/2017 13:17

But you would never use the expression in front of your front

OP, if you're walking backwards is your back walking forwards?

BillBrysonsBeard · 15/08/2017 13:20

Thanks for this OP, you have made me laugh today GrinGrin
I get your logic, I really do but most sayings are nonsense when you think about them!

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 15/08/2017 13:21

If someone was standing with their back facing you and someone said " go and stand behind their back" where would you go? I would go to the front of them

Just.... I can't even.
Go home, OP. You're drunk.

WhereWhyWhat · 15/08/2017 13:22

i would simply be scratching my back.

Which side of it? You say that you say 'behind my back' which implies you think your back has sides. Which side do you think is the back of your back? I think you think the back of your back is your back whereas OP and I (et al) think the surface you scratch IS your back - so someone stood looking at that surface is in fact in front of that surface and is therefore in front of your back.

So if behind your back is infront of you, where is infront of your front??

In front of your front is in front of you of course! By the OP's own logic.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/08/2017 13:22

@tccat - if I am standing behind you, then I cannot simultaneously be standing in front of you. Your back would be in front of me, therefore I would be behind your back.

If I am standing behind you, I am behind your back. Your back is PART of you, therefore I cannot be behind you and at the same time in front of part of you.

Your back is in front of me, I am not in front of your back.

Bunnyhipsdontliegrl · 15/08/2017 13:25

Everything that is behind you is behind your front, your back, your feet, your brain. It is just behind. You are confused because you think of your back as opposite of your front, but if you move a point from in front of you why would you change direction when arriving to your back?

You are wrong and quite stubborn.. your poor husband

Bunnyhipsdontliegrl · 15/08/2017 13:29

Maybe if you'd call your back the fruzzlezeldouch for your explanation, you'd be less confused??? (Or would you?) It's the back of you. What is behind the back of you is behind you. End of

tccat · 15/08/2017 13:33

Where, I love you, you totally get it, they'll never take us alive!!!!! 😀😀

Yes it is "behind ME" but your point of reference is not ME it is MY BACK, which you would now be in front of.

"only dogs and dolphins can hear me" - off topic, but I love this, and I'm stealing it.

Bunnyhipsdontliegrl · 15/08/2017 13:50

"Yes it is "behind ME" but your point of reference is not ME it is MY BACK, which you would now be in front of."

No it would not be in front of, it would be facing it. You are mixing in front of and facing. If someone is standing behind you , they standing behind your back as , just as every part of your body, your back is facing the front of you. It has 2 sides. The side that is inside of you is the front of your back. The side that is outside of you is the back of your back. Anything that is inside of you or in front of you is in front of your back. Everything that is behind you is behind your back

Comedyboobs · 15/08/2017 13:54

But, but...... Why is a bottom a 'backside'???? It's not at the side of your back, it's at the bottom.

MargotLovedTom1 · 15/08/2017 13:55

Where your back is not separate to you, though!!! My back is a part of me. Someone is behind me. They are behind my back, which is a part of me.

But you would never use the expression in front of your front - no, but you might say "It's right in front of your face." The opposite would be "It's behind your back."

Aaaaaaaargh!!!!

IloveBanff · 15/08/2017 13:58

Comedyboobs because if you're saying your body has sides (front, back, left, right) your bottom is not on your front side is is on your back side.

Comedyboobs · 15/08/2017 14:02

Ahhhh, I see..... So anything on the back of me, is my backside. My calf muscles are my backside, the entire back of my body is my backside. I like it. I have a large arse anyway.

But where's the side of my back? It's not my backside, is it?

MaidOfStars · 15/08/2017 14:15

because if you're saying your body has sides

Dorsal-ventral axis: a line from the dorsal (back) to ventral (front).
Anterior-posterior axis: a line from anterior (top) to posterior (bottom).
Left-right axis: I'm not explaining that.
Proximal-distal axis: a line from the proximal (origin of a body part) to the distal (further extremity).

It can get a bit confusing when you think about animals with different body positioning. Anterior for humans is the top of our body i.e. the uppermost of our skull. Anterior for a dog is its nose.

tccat
What do you say if you are standing behind a dog? You're not facing its back....
