Help. Epic hotel choice failure

So here we are in a family hotel in Italy on holiday, near Lake Garda. We are supposed to be here for two weeks and it's costing 5800 euros full board for four of us including DS2 (16) and DS3 (8). We have had a terrible year and this was supposed to be a special holiday to recover.

We all hate it. I hate it so much I could cry.

The hotel itself is really small and the things we thought we would use - spa and so on - are only open 4-7.30 daily (it said nothing about this on the website). We've just had a meal and it's reminiscent of school dinners - I could have cooked it better myself. You can only have dinner from 7-8pm. Nothing like the lovingly garnished offerings on the website, basically stodge. Even the teenager gave up ploughing through it. Our wine eventually came after we had fiinished the meal. There are no soft drinks for kids apart from Fanta, Sprite or Coke. The kids bedroom smells of smoke (as does ours) and has restricted ceiling height so DS2 is going to be banging his head the whole time. The decor reminds me of my grandmother's house about 30 years ago. There is nowhere to get away from the din because it's so small and i currently have a kids' disco under my window (it's 930 pm here) and DS3 is tired from travelling all day but it's too noisy to go to sleep.

I have been down the the manager to explain the problems but he just shrugged and said 'other people like it'. He said we have to stay at least a week otherwise they will have an empty room.

So we are trapped in this glorified youth hostel listening to a kids disco booming away under the window eating stodge and will have to spend 2900 euros for the privilege. And there may be nowhere else to go,

Help, what do I do?

The dinner tonight was

Antipasti: modest salad buffet, deep fried bought in canapé things, wet ham, a few cheap olives/pickles

Pasta: consommé with pasta stars (to be fair I could have had other pasta dishes)

Main course: 3 oz of river fish, overcooked. Dollop of bland, unseasoned polenta with a bay leaf stuck in the top. Tablespoon of raw red cabbage, same as in salad buffet.

Dessert: a kind of sponge studel with very little flavour. Very heavy. Served with lumpy custard.

£400 a day, this place.

Snap Allegretto!

You are in a lovely part of the world, with loads of things to see and visit on your doorstep, so if you can at least free yourself of the FB you can still have a good time.

BoffinMum · 31/07/2017 22:31

The thing about the day trips is a) I am pretty exhausted and did want to flop a bit, and 2) we have rather blown the budget on this hotel.

By the way, does anyone want to suggest nice Ledro hotels for a discerning MN type?

DS2 did snap out of his depression at dinner and do a bloody amazing Gordon Ramsey impression culminating in 'The KITCHEN is CLOSED!' Grin

Oh no how awful Wine

We go to lake Garda every other year, to peschiera and love it
Like others said there's lots to do gardaland, Verona, Venice, markets, swimming in the lake
Can you just use the room as a base?

cowgirlsareforever · 31/07/2017 22:34

I feel your pain Boffin. We have had tough years decades and have had times when we really needed a good holiday only to be disappointed. We hadn't had a 'sunshine' holiday for a long time (until this year), following a disastrous week in Spain. I am a tough character but I locked myself in the bathroom trying to cry silently so as not to upset the DC.
I hope that things start to look up for you.

tobee · 31/07/2017 22:43

Boffin sorry this your holiday, sympathies.

I like the idea of you singing opera tomorrow morning - sounds brilliant and I'm very impressed.

TempsPerdu · 31/07/2017 22:43

Re Ledro hotels we stayed here: www.i-escape.com/hotel-elda - it was just me and DP at the time though, so not sure how it would work for a family. Very modern rooms, lovely outdoor pool area with mountain views, small spa area and decent food - not a huge amount of choice but excellent quality with lots of local ingredients. And very quiet and relaxing - not a kids' club in sight!

Sometimes the holidays that get off to a bad start turn out to be surprisingly good. If you can bond together in adversity and have a laugh about your Italian Fawlty Towers you might all perk up a bit.

I speak from bitter experience of family holidays stretching back a quarter of a century.

If the sun shines tomorrow ( as I am sure it will) things will start to improve.

AztecHero · 31/07/2017 22:47

I'm voting for opera.

Happylittletrees · 31/07/2017 22:48

Lefay resort on lake Garda is what you need. It's a proper 5 star and has the most magnificent setting, gorgeous food and plush rooms. If they have availability that would be my choice.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 31/07/2017 23:01

Boffin it's awful when a holiday turns out to be crap, I hope it turns around for you.

On a side note, have you nc'd? did you start a funny thread last summer about hating the heat and not being able to "waft effortlessly".

BoffinMum · 01/08/2017 06:18

Nosebleed at midnight. Car alarm 1.45am. Church rolling bell inviting me to pray for redemption just now for 5 minutes. 7am on a Tuesday morning. No wonder Henry VIIIth disestablished the church. I don't blame him. What are they thinking! It's the 21st century and you even get apps for the call to prayer. Why we need tolling bells when god fearing people are trying to recover from nosebleeds and sleepless nights and car alarms, I do not know.

I did have a miserable time on holiday in Greece in a Neilson hotel that resembled Butlins on steroids in 36 degrees a couple of years ago. So I imagine in my hour of need, I may well have started a thread. I am not good at being on holiday. In fact i am generally bad at being middle class. The sooner I get my own yacht with hand picked guests that laugh st all my jokes, the better, quite frankly. This is taking far too long.

OP posts:
AztecHero · 01/08/2017 06:21

I think that a more suitable call to prayer would be a morning bout of Nessum Dorma, frankly. Can you youtube it, pretty please?

Might see see you thrown out of your lovely accommodating hotel though. [cough cough]

BoffinMum · 01/08/2017 06:22

By the way on the wafting front I have discovered an excellent anti-chafing cream if anyone is interested. Designed for sporty blokes but very good.

BoffinMum · 01/08/2017 06:23

Aztec this miserable hotelier would make me pay for the room still!!

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 01/08/2017 06:24

Can I be hand picked for the yacht please?

BoffinMum · 01/08/2017 06:28

Yes Stealth. Of course. We laugh but actually DH did hire a yacht for a two hour private tour around the coast with Prosecco on that Neilson holiday and it was great. Really cheered me up. Love that man. His fantasy woman is Kate Humble and he puts up with me!!

AztecHero · 01/08/2017 06:30

I think I shall start to waft. It sounds lovely. Must one trail fingers through wildflowers when one wafts?

Does anyone know where I can find a meadow? (I'm in the south if that helps).

ToesInWater · 01/08/2017 06:37

Nothing useful to say except poor you! Hotel fails are so disappointing as holidays are so precious. Hope you manage to sort something xx

JulesJules · 01/08/2017 06:37

Oh Boff so sorry you are having a crap time. We are having a really tough year too, and I think a bad hol would finish me off, I do feel for you. Can only suggest that you get out on daytrips as pple have suggested and get away from the hotel as soon as you can. Threaten them with lousy reviews and try and get some money back. Sing opera loudly at 7am. Put me down for your yacht.

SouthChinaMorningPost · 01/08/2017 06:40

OMG, I'd be outta there. Leave, cancel card, leave cash at reception.
Weve had to cancel card before thanks for car hire rip off in tenerife.

Reastie · 01/08/2017 06:42

Boff did you book non smoking room (is there any small print saying you had non smoking room)? If so, you could use the smell of smoke to insist on being moved as it's clearly been a room people have previously smoked in.

BoffinMum · 01/08/2017 06:44

I FEEL UNDERSTOOD

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 01/08/2017 06:44

I did not think any rooms would be smoking as it's illegal in the EU, so I didn't specify
