Bicarbonate soda

It's cleans my oven along with white vinegar like new (and it was minging)

So I googled other uses for it and you can whiten and remove stains from teeth, so I decided to try it as I always get a stain on my bottom tooth (smoking and coffee) and I've tried everything to get it off inbetween dentist visits and ice just tried it and it's literally took the stain off in seconds!

Just thought I'd share the highlight of my night while everyone in here is in bed

Coming (posted too soon!)

Nivea101 · 05/07/2016 17:42

I've bought 2 packets today in Wilko's and a large bottle of white vinegar and am going to tackle the minging oven tomorrow!! It also says you can use it down the plughole to clear soap residue from the drains and others have posted here you can use it on the sealant around the bath.

Tomorrow I hope to have a sparkling bathroom and oven Grin Mind you I did try to clean the oven door with a steam mop so hope I haven't baked the grime on Confused

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 05/07/2016 20:52

We inherited our oven and it was nine years old then. The doors were already pretty stained. I think it's beyond help now.

I scraped all the gunk off and washed the door. I then used that oven tonight and the door is white again. The bloody stuff won't clean anything but it sure hangs around.

ample · 05/07/2016 20:52

Great for smells and stains. I've been using it to rid the fridge of bad smells for years but only just recently found if I pop some in a small bowl in the car overnight (when it has that damp car smell after a week of rain) next day it's all fresh. Don't know why it took me so long to figure that out Confused.
Brilliant stuff Star

feralgirl · 05/07/2016 20:56

I make a paste of it and 'paint' the bottom of the oven with it. Soaks up all the grease and you can just brush it out when it gets really minging. Same on the grill pan.

For grouting, we mix with bleach, leave it on for a bit then rinse.

And I use it as shampoo too. And for indigestion.

mrsmiggins6 · 05/07/2016 21:06

for washing hair it doesn't foam up no. I use it as a paste and rub it all over my hair. I then leave it in and clean myself then rinse it off. about every three washes I then do an apple cider vinegar rinse which makes it lovely and soft. Shampoo strips the natural oils in your hair, bicarb doesn't. it's awesome stuff.

unlucky83 · 05/07/2016 23:24

Mrsbleach will do nothing for your oven...
I find a damp green scourer dipped in dry bicarb works best.. and I noticed on a company advertising oven cleaning they used one of those glass scrapers for removing paint splashes from windows(basically a Stanley knife blade in a holder) on the doors worked a treat...

DamsonGinIsMyThing · 06/07/2016 09:00

I've just done my teeth with a bit, there's definite improvement. Though it made me salivate like no tomorrow. I'm so sexy.

skivvywoman · 06/07/2016 09:08

Ladies I just found video about the oven and I missed out a bit

Once you've made paste and smeared on put more bicarbonate and vinegar in bowl and top up with water then put in the oven for 45 mins with oven at 100

Why did I never think of using it in trainers/shoes?

sergeantmajor · 06/07/2016 18:33

Don't be shocked but I use bicarb as a very good facial scrub. It is much smoother and more even than grainy scrubs and rinses off easily. If you're too scared to put straight on your face, try it on the back of your hand first, stroke it around gently then rinse off. Very effective!

Dairybanrion · 06/07/2016 18:40

How would I use it on a dry carpet/ couch that has been weed on? They're clean. They just smell.
Thanks in advance.

CarbyBarbie · 06/07/2016 18:54

omg i love this thread !

I'm going to do my trotters tommorow.

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/07/2016 20:16

Dairy sprinkle dry bicarb on generously, work it in a bit and then leave several hours/overnight. Then just vacuum up.

Might need a couple of goes if v smelly.

dementedma · 06/07/2016 20:26

My oven door is beyond redemption. Think I need new glass.
I put bicarb in smelly trainers ,and mixed to a paste it is soothing for itchy bites and lumps.

Dairybanrion · 06/07/2016 20:41

Thank you Bore. Smile

TalcAndTurnips · 06/07/2016 20:51

This stuff must be so good - I've seen a chap selling little packets of it in the local park.

Perhaps he's undercutting supermarket prices; who knows? Next time I'm there maybe I'll give it a whirl and try the tooth thing.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 06/07/2016 21:16

New oven glass! Why didn't I think of that? Where would I get that from? It would have to be made to measure.

Buddahbelly · 06/07/2016 21:35

msadorabledearheart If you google the make and model number of your oven and type parts at the end, It should bring up a list of spare parts you can buy.

I had to get my dad a new glass bit for his door last year when he'd tried unscrewed the glass to clean all the little bits inside, but ended up smashing it when it got too slippy. Smile god bless him for trying! Think the new glass was about £17 for his, but obviously varies.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 06/07/2016 22:34

Ooh thanks Buddah, I'll try that. It's about fifteen years old but it might be worth a try.

Klaptout · 06/07/2016 22:39

Fab, lots of uses for Bicarb that I hadn't heard of before, I will try a few of them. I imagine that there have been a surge in Bicarb sales due to this thread alone.
Talcandturnips

I'm still laughing at your bloke down the park selling little bags of Bicarb.

Cucumber, whilst not as versatile as Bicarb, has some interesting alternative uses, so far I've only tried using it as shoe polish and for the bathroom mirror.

Great idea to put this thread in classics

mathanxiety · 07/07/2016 01:31

Clean/destink your drain - a few teaspoons of bicarb down the drain followed by white vinegar. It gets all frothy.

I use it as a facial scrub too. And on sunburn, in a paste.

I have also used it to clean off some silver plated serving utensils that only see the light of day at Christmas.

boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=637665

You line a large glass dish with tin foil, place your tarnished silver in it, then sprinkle some bicarb over it all, then add boiling water. Do this in a well ventilated area as the smell of sulphur will be very strong. The reaction also generates a good deal of heat, so make sure your glass bowl is pyrex or over proof. Immerse your utensils or whatever you are trying to clean. Remove after a minute or two (use tongs) and let dry. You can dry them with a cloth if you like. Your tarnish will disappear in front of your eyes in the solution.

I am a HUUUGE fan of baking soda. Use it for heartburn, cleaning, carpets, couches, mattresses, especially if I have someone coming who I know is bad with dog allergies, I'll lash it everywhere. Too much sun, bread soda bath. Have a gooey looking scrape? In it goes to a bath. Chickenpox, paste all over. Same with bites. Haven't tried teeth (yet)!

Re: MOSQUITO BITES I honestly don't know why I only found this out last year, as I live in the Southern US and they love me, but blasting the bite with a hot hairdryer until it hurts works like a charm to kill the itch. It won't make the mark disappear, and you may need to repeat it a couple of times, but it really works!

choli · 07/07/2016 05:13

I am surprised to see so many mixes of BiCarb and vinegar. I thought on a chemical basis they cancelled each other out.

mathanxiety · 07/07/2016 05:55

You can also heat a spoon in boiling water or very hot water and then hold it to the bite.

White vinegar is good for itching bites (as long as you haven't broken the skin by scratching).
