Bicarbonate soda

It's cleans my oven along with white vinegar like new (and it was minging)

So I googled other uses for it and you can whiten and remove stains from teeth, so I decided to try it as I always get a stain on my bottom tooth (smoking and coffee) and I've tried everything to get it off inbetween dentist visits and ice just tried it and it's literally took the stain off in seconds!

Just thought I'd share the highlight of my night while everyone in here is in bed

Furbys I have a grimy aga too - what did you do with the BoS? Was it hot or cold? (The aga not the bicarb!) I really want a nice clean cooker.

skivvywoman · 02/07/2016 17:30

Laza yeah it would

Thanks skivvywoman. Heaven knows that will come in very handy at the moment!

I've reported this thread and asked for it to go into Classics as it's really useful. It'll disappear if it stays in Chat.

If others report it, MNHQ may at least move it to somewhere more permanent.

Great for getting sticker residue off - just mix into a paste and apply to the stickiness, leave for 10 minutes then wipe off. Et voila!

KanyesVest · 02/07/2016 21:24

Those asking where to buy it, you can get it in the baking aisle in the supermarket, aka bread soda. Not to be confused with caustic/washing soda.

TheRattleBag · 02/07/2016 21:33

You can also buy it in larger quantities on eBay (and no doubt Amazon too).

Gotheftosleep · 02/07/2016 22:09

Wilkinsons sell 500g packs for £1.50.

ChoccyJules · 02/07/2016 22:19

Does it also work miracles on the seal of the washing machine door?

unlucky83 · 02/07/2016 22:42

Also love bicarb (and white vinegar)...I can confirm bleach and bicarb worked like a dream on my mouldy shower silicone seal.
(Always have to say - don't mix bleach with vinegar!!! it will give off poisonous fumes -bleach and bicarb is fine...)
But my no 1 use for it is on really greasy things -like the greasy/dusty grime you get on eg the top of kitchen cupboards.
Damp cloth, dip in dry bicarb and wipe the grease and it comes off like a dream. Wipe with a soapy cloth - spotless. I know it is truly amazing -best thing I have every used.

(I went to work somewhere (as a chef) - tiny kitchen with lots of open shelves and a rail with things like sieves hanging on that hadn't been cleaned for an age - apart from one or two thing that must have been used regularly everything was coated in dusty grease. I tried neat 'flash', neat washing up liquid, commercial degreaser, vinegar, lemon juice and putting things through the dishwasher (came out covered in white sticky gunk!) Took me hours over days to clean it all up (and get rid/ store all the stuff away to make it easier to keep clean) I only wished I'd known about bicarb then...

Only problem is the cloth you use gets full of nasty sticky stuff...so use old rags or disposable ones or be prepared to boil them up and probably best to wear gloves as if you get the grease on your hands it is hard to get off too...

skivvywoman · 02/07/2016 22:49

At my kitchen sink there was a bit mildew at one small bit on the silicon which went on to the bunker part, I have tried everything to get it off I literally rubbed it with bleach and BS and it came off!! So I soaked cotton balls and have let it sit on it

washign soda is much better and far cheaper, for household use.
not for our teeth though

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/07/2016 12:25

Right, I know what I'm doing this week. Every time I use the oven for more than 30 minutes it sets the smoke alarm off, tis the extent of its filthiness. What do you reckon to using a spray bottle and spraying the filaments at the top? These are the most minging bits and impossible to clean. Tried steam cleaner and it just baked the crap on even more.

skivvywoman · 03/07/2016 13:42

Just dab it on with a sponge

MrsPear · 03/07/2016 14:34

Bicarbonate of soda 4 tbsp a tbsp of honey mix with warm water yo make a paste and smear on face. Leave 15 mins and then wash off with flannel and warm water. Gets rid of all the deep crap BUT only do if you have non sensitive skin!

FurbysMakeSexNoises · 03/07/2016 21:27

Liliana is made it into a paste and shoved it on everywhere on a cold AGA and then wiped off plus a bit of scrubbing and old stains came off amazingly. The only annoying bit was where it got stuck onto the edges of the hob lids where it's like a wire mesh so I'd advise to leave those bits. Kept dropping off dry for weeks!

ParanoidGynodroid · 04/07/2016 10:47

This true for many uses. And washing soda can be substituted for some of your washing powder, too, to be more economical.

However, washing soda doesn't get rid of smells they way BofS does.

RobinsAreTerritorialFuckers · 04/07/2016 10:50

Isn't the tooth thing a bit risky? It's basically eating through the enamel, right?

skivvywoman · 04/07/2016 10:53

It's says it's safe on Google

RobinsAreTerritorialFuckers · 04/07/2016 10:54

Mmm. I'm still feeling a bit cautious somehow!

But it's interesting.

skivvywoman · 04/07/2016 11:01

I wouldn't do it every day just once in a while

skivvywoman Vitally important question - how dirty was your oven? I am not judging you in the slightest, I just want to know how many attempts it will take with the bicarb of soda to clean my midden oven...
I am going to try this and if it works after just a couple of goes (it'll definitely need at least 2 tries), you will be my new favourite mumsnetter.

BeautyQueenFromMars · 04/07/2016 11:32

Arm & Hammer use bicarb of soda in their toothpaste don't they? It's what makes it taste so foul. So I guess it's safe enough. Plus we eat it!

rainbowstardrops · 04/07/2016 11:47

This is inspiring me! Am I bored enough to try to clean my minging oven door? Hmm
