It's driving me crazy Grin

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

Seriously though the first thing he said was "a young Ronald Reagan".

A faked up version is just rubbishSad

OttiliaVonBCup · 07/11/2014 22:04

Who is the blonde actress at the end of the clock video?

Sorry to start another one...

BOFster · 07/11/2014 22:05

James Stewart isn't wearing a white shirt in IAWL either.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 07/11/2014 22:08

I think it could be Hedy Lamarr

QueenOfThorns · 07/11/2014 22:09

Great still from the ad, Girlwhowearsglasses. I'll have what she's having Wink

BOFster · 07/11/2014 22:11

I'm not sure it's Hedy Lamarr either. She was a bit vampier.

Any help? (not that those are tagged either, but might throw up some leads)

LouiseBrooks · 07/11/2014 22:13

I've played this over several times and - as an aficionado of old movies - I'd say it isn't any movie or actress mentioned so far, including Stanwyck or Maureen O'Hara (Miracle on 34th Street). I have no idea who it is - and I thought I knew every great leading lady of the 30s and 40s. I don't think it's a really well known film at all, to be honest. I did wonder if it was a grown up Deanna Durbin but I don't think it's her either.

fanjodisfunction · 07/11/2014 22:14

did wonder if the guy was Gregory peck, thought maybe they thought they were being clever with the peck reference considering its about a penguin. the bloke is quite slight I think like pick or stewert.

BOFster · 07/11/2014 22:14

Altogether too gorgeous.

fanjodisfunction · 07/11/2014 22:14

peck I meant

BOFster · 07/11/2014 22:16

That video isn't available here, it says, Buck, but thanks for trying.

Louise, I just can't let this defeat us Grin

BOFster · 07/11/2014 22:18

Slight like a young Ronald Reagan, you mean? Grin

Whoops, just realised I missed half the thread! Sorry. I couldn't even see the man properly so haven't a clue about him.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 07/11/2014 22:20

BOF that pic of Hedy Lamarr makes her look like she has GIANT HANDS.

LouiseBrooks · 07/11/2014 22:21

Hedy Lamarr wasn't just beautiful, she was incredibly clever - quote from wiki

"Lamarr was also notable as co-inventor, with composer George Antheil, of an early technique for spread spectrum communications and frequency hopping,[6] which paved the way for today's wireless communications[7][8] and which, upon its invention in 1941, was deemed so vital to national defense that government officials would not allow publication of its details.[9] At the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Sixth Pioneer Awards in 1997, she and George Antheil were honoured with special awards for their "trail-blazing development of a technology that has become a key component of wireless data systems."[6]"

BOFster · 07/11/2014 22:24

Yes, Hedy Lamarr was an amazing woman, definitely.

ZingOfSeven · 07/11/2014 22:24

could it be a brand new scene created just for the ad - so JL can avoid copyright issues?
in that case it could be anyone

LouiseBrooks · 07/11/2014 22:25

Who is the blonde actress at the end of the clock video?

Did you mean the girl in the white dress with the parasol? I don't know the actress's name but it's a clip from "Picnic at Hanging Rock"

jaynebxl · 07/11/2014 22:26

O no I really thought you'd all have worked it out by the time I got to the end of the thread.

BOFster · 07/11/2014 22:26

I would have thought JL could stump up for a one second shot though, don't you reckon? It would cost more to film something original, probably.

BOFster · 07/11/2014 22:27

I spotted that too, Louise Grin. Great film. No, I think it's the woman a few clips earlier. I didn't recognise her, but post-60s isn't so much my area really.

OP posts:
OttiliaVonBCup · 07/11/2014 22:28

No, the tall one with the shorter hair on the clip before that one.

wingcommandergallic · 07/11/2014 22:28

lots of IAWL photos above and it is the obvious choice. DP reckons it would cost more for a mockup than a licence fee to use the clip.
