It's driving me crazy Grin

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

Look at this early publicity shot of Myrna Loy- what a fabulous hair-do Grin

Ooh yes cd be. Definitely on the louche end Grin. Therefore def not Celia Johnson.

Quangle · 07/11/2014 21:40

Looks like Jodie Foster

QueenOfThorns · 07/11/2014 21:44

Joan Bennett and Gregory Peck in The Macomber Affair? He even has the right shirt, look!

Jodie Foster channelling Myrna Loy

If your enjoying racking your brains over this you'll love a 24 hr 'art' installation ( more a triumph of interns and editing) telling the time through glimpses of clocks, watches and people in hundreds of different films all spliced together. Oddly compelling in a 'what's that film, I recognise that'

BOFster · 07/11/2014 21:48

Ooh, QueenOfThorns, that's a possibility...

Having said that, if the movie is based on the short story "The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber" (something like that), then it's unlikely, because there's no love lost between the characters, so I can't see there being a big romantic kiss like that Sad. No sign of the film on YouTube either Sad.

I just did a google face search and came with wildly inappropriate images, John Pertwee as Dr Who amongst others!

BOFster · 07/11/2014 21:54

Here's a still though. Hmm, I don't think it's Joan Bennett in the JL ad really. The make-up seems wrong.

Border, now you are just tormenting us Grin

QueenOfThorns · 07/11/2014 21:56

Hmmm. Also, not sure that the whole family would be sitting around watching that one, either!

fanjodisfunction · 07/11/2014 21:57

BBC are saying its a wonderful life, so could be a mock up version as they didn't want to pay but then again its very short less than seven seconds.

OttiliaVonBCup · 07/11/2014 21:57

Yeah.
And the eyebrows,
JB's are thicker at the inner side, a bit like tadpoles.

QueenOfThorns · 07/11/2014 21:59

The eyebrows are wrong, too. OK, I admit defeat, but I don't think it's Myrna Loy either - the woman in the clip is a bit more wholesome looking somehow!

BOFster · 07/11/2014 21:59

The BBC don't know shit Grin. Honestly, there's no close-up shot of a kiss like that in the entire film, not one where you only see the woman's face from the neck up.

Apologies for the dreadful punctuation, sorry for any distress I may have caused....

Am now planning a massive B&W Sunday afternoon, triple bill. Would my 7 & 9 year old watch Harvey or is it more 'adult' then I remember?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 07/11/2014 22:02

We are stumped over here for the moment but I've got DH on the case and he is (a) very into movies and film trivia and stuff and (b) like a bloodhound so no doubt we will have an answer soon.

Seriously though the first thing he said was "a young Ronald Reagan".

BOFster · 07/11/2014 22:02

I think they'd love it. I'd force them anyway Grin

BorderBinLiner · 07/11/2014 22:02

I reckon it's early Myrna, Hays code still in place, all feet firmly on the ground.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 07/11/2014 22:03

I really think this is a faked up version of IAWL. Here are the two most similar shots. Jimmy Stewart has a bald patch above his ears and quite a bad dye job

WhereTheWildlingsAre · 07/11/2014 22:03

i'm still searching. Am Now obsessed!

Raahh · 07/11/2014 22:03

It is (as has been said often) definitely not Donna Reed. So unless there is a close up of some one else in IAWL - it definitely isn't from that.

Isn't it annoying?

How many of us will lose sleep over this?

me

Grin
BOFster · 07/11/2014 22:04

Yes, keep him to the grindstone, Hearts- I've been hours on this now, and I'm losing the will to live Grin
