Help me identify this film from the John Lewis advert?

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

I thought it was Deanna Durbin at first, but on closer inspection I don't think its from an old film at all, I think they've mocked it up

I worked for over 10 years in customer services at JL, and this is just the sort of question that would really annoy us - that and 'where can I buy the 'made specially for the advert' dress from'?

From Here To Eternity is a bit late, I think, and I'm pretty sure it was in colour.

Claudia Cardinale was a bit late too- she was more 1960s.
