It's driving me crazy Grin

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

ooh- I loved her in 'Gypsy' - i love old films. Not enough old films on tv anymoreSad

BOFster · 07/11/2014 20:52

Definitely a look of Rosalind Russell, I agree. I'll do some digging...

I thought it was Deanna Durbin at first, but on closer inspection I don't think its from an old film at all, I think they've mocked it up

What about 'I know where I'm. Going'

looking at the screen shot more closely, I'm not sure if he is going to snog her or strangle her.

Maybe it's a Hammer Horror and we're barking up the wrong tree?

The Lion King?

Raahh · 07/11/2014 21:06

I worked for over 10 years in customer services at JL, and this is just the sort of question that would really annoy usGrin - that and 'where can I buy the 'made specially for the advert' dress from'?

made me grateful that for the first few years I was there, Jl didn't do tv ads. Grin

BOFster · 07/11/2014 21:13

I've tried Barbara Stanwyk in Christmas In Connecticut, and now I'm skimming through The Man Who Came To Dinner to see if it's Ann Sheridan...

I can't bear the thought of it being a CGI mock-up- what a swizz that would be!

It's not Claudia Cardinale, is it?

snice · 07/11/2014 21:14

are you sure it isnt Montgomery Clift-because then it could be From Here to Eternity

QueenOfThorns · 07/11/2014 21:18

I think it could be Joan Bennett?

BOFster · 07/11/2014 21:19

From Here To Eternity is a bit late, I think, and I'm pretty sure it was in colour.

OP posts:
BOFster · 07/11/2014 21:20

Claudia Cardinale was a bit late too- she was more 1960s.

OP posts:
BOFster · 07/11/2014 21:20

I'll investigate Joan Bennett...

OP posts:
snice · 07/11/2014 21:22

is it these two?
MOntgomery Clift and Donna Reid

BorderBinLiner · 07/11/2014 21:27

Myrna loy, 1930's by the eyebrows, these days they'd fix Clark Gables ears in the edit.

WhereTheWildlingsAre · 07/11/2014 21:29

Great thread! My first thought was Barabara Stanwyck too. Definitely not Brief encounter though.

BOFster · 07/11/2014 21:32

Snice, the actress isn't Donna Reed though Sad.

No idea but great question. And pshaw to India Knight. Def not Casablanca.

BOFster · 07/11/2014 21:35

Surely it can't be a mock-up? Wouldn't that cost more than just paying for the rights to something with a kiss?

OttiliaVonBCup · 07/11/2014 21:35

Myrna Loy has the eyebrows and the face shape.
Good one!
