got news today that I cant share with anyone - not my husband, not my children, not my staff, not my team mates, not my parents, not my best friends - it will have significant impact stuff - I cant talk about it and its made me fairly miserable - awfully miserable - I am red eyed and in a bad mood

so .... give it to me ... you best Annie impression of the Sun Coming Out Tomorrow, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, or some quote about there being a silver lining in every cloud

Go on, hit me with it, do you best, because today cant get much worse ... I think

IamnotAngela who is that lovely poem by? Hope you are asleep now OP.

Timeandtune · 16/05/2014 21:40

If it wasn't for the storms there wouldn't be any good sailors.

KissesBreakingWave · 16/05/2014 21:45

Oh, and one more, for evenings like the one I have just given the FUCK up on:

"When angry, count to four. When very angry, swear." - Mark Twain.

(There's a H. L. Mencken one about hoisting the black flag and slitting throats. Also occasionally apposite.)

" Do not fear the darkness, it is gentler than you think" - Ben Okri

At times like these I love a bit of Florence;

Regrets collect like old friends
Here to relive your darkest moments
I can see no way, I can see no way
And all of the ghouls come out to play

And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some things to myself
I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn

And I've been a fool and I've been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I'm always dragging that horse around

Our love is pastured, such a mournful sound
Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground
So I like to keep my issues drawn
But it's always darkest before the dawn

And I am done with my graceless heart
So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart
'Cause I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn

And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
And given half the chance would I take any of it back
It's a fine romance but it's left me so undone
It's always darkest before the dawn

And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope
It's a shot in the dark aimed right at my throat
'Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Well what the hell I'm gonna let it happen to me, yeah

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 16/05/2014 22:01

Blush sorry, that's massive.

I also love Bear Hunt - "We can't go over it, we can't go under it, we've got to go through it".

foslady · 16/05/2014 22:02

There's always tomorrow if today's not so good
The day can seem much brighter with with a changed attitude
Hope offers scope from which all things can follow
So just try to remember - there's always tomorrow...

ilovemybum · 16/05/2014 22:07

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain

WyrdByrd · 16/05/2014 22:07

I can do anything through God that strengthens me

It's been a mantra since I was about 10 years old - and I can't remember where it's came from - school, church youth club or my mum, but even now at 38 and with my faith being a bit more wobbly these days I still find it comforting.

I also tend to resort to my Gideons Bible when the going is really tough - it lists lots of 'problems' at the front cross referenced with verses that might comfort/inspire.

Obviously feel free to ignore if you're not religious.

BlueJean · 16/05/2014 22:24

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than

It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
Whe he might have captured the victor's cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out -

The silver tint in the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It might be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

It must be truly horrible to have something really worrying and not be able to share it with anyone. But you can share it with yourself cant you? thats not breaking any confidences surely?
Letter to future you will let you write it all down in minute detail - all the feelings and fears .And in a years time you will read it and see just how far you have come from this moment.

Chin up.

KiaOraOAotearoa · 16/05/2014 23:12

I tell myself very firmly and seriously, in true O'Hara spirit 'I'll think about it tomorrow'.
I also take a piece of paper and write in two columns: what I feel and what I think. Try to separate the two as much as I can.
Hope you're ok.

lavenderhoney · 16/05/2014 23:13

I like fuzzpigs contribution:)

Keep buggering on is one I use to myself, and you're a long time dead ( cheery)

Apart from that, someone once told me it would be very unlikely what is bothering me today will be remembered in a couple of months.

And also, don't stress about what you can't change. Change what you can instead. And don't stress about being stressed

WhatwouldGemmado · 16/05/2014 23:24

Another one here who would say please read Desiderata, it's very calming.
Also, from my lovely brother, when I was fretting - 'Nothing is insurmountable'

JustPassingThru · 17/05/2014 00:24

It'll be all the same in 100 years.

As said by wry former colleague when we were stressing about small things. Something tells me this isn't a small thing. Have some Thanks

Alambil · 17/05/2014 00:28

I know EXACTLY how you feel because the exact same thing happened to me this week - I ended up calling the Samaritans last night...

HildaOgden · 17/05/2014 00:34

Even the worst day only lasts 24 hours,
Even the worst hour only lasts 60 minutes,
Even the worst minute only lasts 60 seconds.

Take it day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute, second by second...and before you know it,this too shall pass.

TequilaMockingbirdy · 17/05/2014 00:40

Tough times don't last but tough people do

MrsRuffdiamond · 17/05/2014 00:53

Nil desperandum, op, It'll all come out in the wash.

HappySmileyFace · 17/05/2014 04:54

Sorry things are a bit shit OP. Hope it all gets better.

Just saw this quote on fb and thought of you -

A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.
~ Irish proverb

BillyBanter · 17/05/2014 05:28

One day this will all be 20 years ago.

hoboken · 17/05/2014 05:34

If there were no endings there would be no beginnings.

Tomorrow is another day

Tomorrow may be better, it may even be worse, but at least it will be different

Good luck

LettertoHerms · 17/05/2014 06:15

This thread is wonderful. It's helping me a lot with something I'm going through. Thank you all.

Mine has been said many times over, "This too shall pass."

TheMilkyBarsAreOnMe · 17/05/2014 07:17

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final ~ Rilke

AhVienna · 17/05/2014 09:43

I recently asked my neighbour (in her late 80s and who’d led an interesting life with stories to tell, etc) what she had learnt most from life. She said “There are times in life when you go through a hard time, and at the time it seems like it’s the end of the world... but you get through it. You always come out the other side”

HappySmileyFace · 17/05/2014 14:40

Thanks for this thread OP. My day unexpectedly turned to complete shit and so I went back to look at my quote posted above (and others).
