got news today that I cant share with anyone - not my husband, not my children, not my staff, not my team mates, not my parents, not my best friends - it will have significant impact stuff - I cant talk about it and its made me fairly miserable - awfully miserable - I am red eyed and in a bad mood

so .... give it to me ... you best Annie impression of the Sun Coming Out Tomorrow, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, or some quote about there being a silver lining in every cloud

Go on, hit me with it, do you best, because today cant get much worse ... I think

I am a big fan of Bad Luhrmann's Sunscreen, cheesy as other can be. In particular for me:

the race is long, and in the end, only with yourself

REM's 'Everybody Hurts' is a great song:
When your day is long
And the night, the night is yours alone
When you're sure you've had enough
Of this life, well hang on

Don't let yourself go
'Cause everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong
Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone (Hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go (Hold on)
If you think you've had too much
Of this life, well hang on

Everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don't throw your hand, oh no

Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone
No, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life
The days and nights are long
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody cries
Everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes

So hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts

What a beautiful thread.

As part of my morning prayers I say a verse from a hymn sung at my DGM funeral, it was one of her favourites

Lord, for tomorrow and it's needs
I do not pray,
But keep me, guide me, love me Lord
Just for today.

Helps me remember that I said it yesterday and got through okay. And that one day at a time is all I ever need to manage.

Do any Scots know the name of a old Scots poem. It's about everything being alright. It basically says "all is well, all is well and at the end of the day all is well'. Of course this is in old Scots language.

From one of DSs books:

And when you get knocked down, my sweetheart, look up to the sky without fear. Because sometimes you need to be flat on your back before starlight begins to appear.

It will be all right in the end...and if it's not all right, it's not the end.

I also love "This too shall pass".

Crying may endure for the night, but joy cometh in the morning.

I go with 'save pessimism for better days' and also 'the gods may be fucking your life over right royally but eventually they'll get bored of you and move on to someone else'.

Footprints got me through when dd was ill and the future looked uncertain...I wrote on the bathroom wall and tiled over it so it's there always...
My beautiful child. I love you and would never leave you. Whenever you see only 1 set of footprints....it's then that I have carried you.
Still chokes me up but reminds me we are strong. We can carry each other if needs be. Wink

These are some which help me sometimes:

"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become." - Carl Jung

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it." - Nelson Mandela

"There comes a time in every woman's life when the only thing that helps is a glass of champagne!" - Bette Davis

I am a massive geek and I love Firefly so I find a lot of comfort in "Still flying".

The full quote is:
Simon: You had the Alliance on you, criminals and savages… half the people on this ship have been shot or wounded, including yourself, and you’re harboring known fugitives.
Mal: We’re still flying.
Simon: That’s not much.
Mal: It’s enough.

Like lots of these quotes, it's just about carrying on when things are tough. Just making it through the day is enough.

I also have a little personal mantra "I am strong, I am good, I am beautiful" which I say to myself in the mirror when I need a little pep talk! Grin

Sir Harry Lauder wrote'Keep Right On To The End Of The Road' in 1916 after hearing of the death of his son John, a captain in the 8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, in the First World War.

The chorus urges: "Keep right on to the end of the road / Keep right on to the end / Tho' the way may be long, let your heart be strong, keep right on round the bend. Tho' you're tired and weary still journey on, till you come to your happy abode".

Also when I'm lying awake worrying I always say 'God can take this burden off my shoulders'. Not religious at all but this seems to work

Psalm 46:10, "Be still and know that I am God"
Remembering this has helped me through a lot of hard times.

This is kinda cheesy but there's a Shaggy song that really helped me though a very tough time and there seemed no end to it all...best lines from the choruses that helped me to 'keep on keeping on'. The brighter tomorrow came. They do, in time.

Gotta big up all my peoples who be working on the future
Though they know they gotta struggle
To all my homies working on the 9 to 5
And doing right to keep themselves up out of trouble
Although sometimes I know it seems impossible
There ain't no need in drowning in your sorrows
If things are as bad as they can be
You can be sure there'll be a brighter tomorrow

All the harsh realities
Appears to come in two's and Three's
Don't worry cause
There'll be a better day
One thing I can promise you
Just keep on keeping on
I swear to you
There's gonna be a brighter day

I've always liked Hilaire Belloc:

From quiet homes and first beginning,
Out to the undiscovered ends,
There's nothing worth the wear of winning,
But laughter and the love of friends.
