got news today that I cant share with anyone - not my husband, not my children, not my staff, not my team mates, not my parents, not my best friends - it will have significant impact stuff - I cant talk about it and its made me fairly miserable - awfully miserable - I am red eyed and in a bad mood

so .... give it to me ... you best Annie impression of the Sun Coming Out Tomorrow, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, or some quote about there being a silver lining in every cloud

Go on, hit me with it, do you best, because today cant get much worse ... I think

There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love.

  • Washington Irving

Joseph Campbell — 'We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.'

I quite like: It'll all be okay in the end, and if it isn't okay, it's not the end.
My dad is even more succinct: This will pass.

My Great Grandad's fave one was "You die if you worry, you die if you don't". A round-about way of saying if you can'y do anything about it there's no point worrying. Sounds a bit harsh but he was born in 1878!

One of my favourites 'Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof' - not 100% sure what it means but I think it's sort of 'deal with the things you have to deal with now and don't exhaust yourself trying to deal with the things that are to come'. Anyway it makes me laugh cos it's so ponderous.

Also love Churchill's one that goes something like, 'I have had many troubles in my life, most of which never happened.'

Good luck.

I'm not big on God but I like this one.

When god closes one door, he always opens another, even though sometimes it's hell in the hallway!

Makes it feel finite rather than like it will go on forever.

Oh and just remembered my friend whose older brother died as a young man very unexpectedly. His mother got one letter of condolence (among many others) which began 'What a terrible start to the New Year . . .'

DH's a Grandma was Austrian and lived through the Nazis, occupation by the Russians and turning up in rural Bradford just after the war Unmarried and pregnant. She was a lovely lady but tough as old boots.
Her response to everything was " nobody died" - when crap happens to us we always say it to each other. It makes us realise that you can get through things you never thought you could .

My lovely DM has a whole cupboard full of these kind of phrases she trots out when times are rough. The one that has stuck is 'what's for you won't pass you by' or 'get on with it - you're a long time dead'

Don't know if either of those are any use to you! They're not always cheering (or appropriate, but that's another thread!). Hope you get through this ok op

Mine is 'There's always a way forward. It might mean taking a detour from the most straightforward path, but it will still take you forward'.

Hold on.

The feelings you fear you’re trapped in will serve their purpose, and then fade away.

Hard to imagine isn’t it? Almost impossible to believe when every cell in your body seems to cry out in agony, desperately in need of comfort. When it feels like the only thing in the whole world that can touch your pain and banish it is beyond your grasp.

And after all this time, the assurance that you will heal has become an empty broken promise. Just let one tiny cell in your body continue to believe in the promise of healing. Just one. You can surrender every other cell to your despair.

Just that one little cell of faith that you can heal and be whole again is enough to keep you going, is enough to lead you through the darkness. Although it can’t banish your suffering, it can sustain you until the time comes for you to let your pain go. And the letting go can only occur in its own time, as much as we would like to push the pain away forever.

Hold on. Hold on to appreciate the beauty of the earth, to feel the songs of the birds in your heart, to learn and to teach, to laugh a genuine laugh, to dance on the beach, to rest peacefully, to experience contentment, to want to be no other place but in the here and now, to trust in yourself, and to trust your life.

Hold on because it’s worth the terrible waiting. Hold on because you are worthy. Hold on because the wisdom that will follow you out of this darkness will be a tremendous gift.

Hold on because you have so much love and joy waiting to be experienced.
Hold on because life is precious, even though it can bring terrible losses.
Hold on because there is so much that you can not imagine waiting ahead on your journey – a destiny that only you can fulfill.

Hold on although you’re exhausted and your grasp is shaky, and you want more than anything to let go sometimes.
Please hold on.

So much in life can be difficult, even impossible to understand.

And the light, the light at the end of the dark tunnel for so long cannot be seen, although eventually you’ll begin to feel it’s warmth as you move forward. And forward you must move in order to get through the hell of remembering, of despair, of rage, of grief. Keep looking forward, please.

Rest if you must, doubt your ability to survive the journey if you have to, but never let go of the guide ropes, although when you close your fingers around them, your hands feel empty, they are there. Please trust me, they are there.

I don't know if this will help, as it's not exactly an 'it'll be all right' quote, but I was once told it when I was a teenager and have pretty much tried to live by it ever since. If it's news that has you worried then try it.Smile

There are two ways of looking at a problem; either you can do something about it, in which case, do it and stop worrying, or you can't, in which case, find a way around it and stop worrying.

It must be horrible not being able to talk about it. Never mind us nosy gits, just do what you need to do.Smile

Say not the Struggle Naught availeth, Arthur Hugh Clough

SAY not the struggle naught availeth,
The labour and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been they remain.

If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke conceal'd,
Your comrades chase e'en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back, through creeks and inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.

And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in the light;
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly!
But westward, look, the land is bright!

Might not be 100% right for your situation but these are some of my favourite sayings:-

Life is unfolding perfectly.
As one door closes another opens.
Nobody has died.
I'm still alive.
Things can only get better.

It may not seem like it at the moment but there is a reason that you have this problem. You will either learn from it or it will lead onto something bigger and better.
