  1. Have smeared the twins' cradle cap liberally with rapeseed oil, left, combed through, left Dentinox on in the bath for ten mins, rinsed through, and it all came off in big satisfying clumps. I got a bizarre amount of pleasure from this.

  1. I bit the bullet and got Plumbs round to reupholster my awkwardly shaped sofa and it's gorgeous! And the covers are just about less tricky to take on and off than a sleeping bag is to put back in its bag IYKWIM and they're machine washable. I, embarrassingly, may have punched the air. I need to get out more.

  1. Storing complete bedding sets inside one of the pillow cases has led to uncrumpled sheets and duvets that MATCH.

  1. Tomatoes out of the fridge are sweet and juicy.

A little blob of toothpaste cleans silver up lovely.
My CDT teacher told me that in about 1983.

For basic cooling tea whilst juggling children, it is useful to know that an ordinary standard size mug is half a pint, and the big end of a medicine spoon is a teaspoon.

mammatj it's official, I love you

Ah, seriously, peeling turnip is the bane of my life
Great tip about soda crystals too. I have some.

Mine

You can freeze mash - I have just bought a huge bag so going to stockpile to go with quick meals

Citronella essential oil in a burner is gorgeous - fresh and natural and wards off flies too

Quick pancakes - one cup flour, one egg, one cup milk

I will try and think of more ...

Silverten- you can get rubber castor cups that are non-slip. Amazon have them.

My tip: Peeling squash can be done with a Zyliss vegetable peeler. I bought a pair of them for a fiver on Amazon. Best five quid I've ever spent!

Bicarb of soda is the king of cleaning, especially when paired with vinegar. If it hasn't been mentioned already.

Plain white toothpaste rubbed into a scratched dvd, CD or Wii game and polished off with a clean cloth.

Actually works - I couldn't believe it but it's saved Mario kart from the bin!

Cheap bottle of distilled white vinegar in the kettle for half an hour = lime scale free! Add a little bit of bicarbonate if it's really bad. I have a glass kettle so do this a lot as it looks awful. Had it 3 years and still looks great after a clean!

Bicarbonate mixed with washing up liquid is a great gritty cleaner for showers, sinks, ovens etc. smear everywhere, squirt with vinegar and wipe off!

Great thread. Particularly the patio gunk one from rafflesway

To make a squash easier to peel, pierce a few times with a knife and microwave for 2-3 minutes on high.

Surgical spirit removes sticker gunk easily

How do you do a maintenance wash on a washing machine??

I second the washing powder in the burnt saucepan, works a treat. And that the hose on the petrol pump will stretch to the other side of the car. The times I have driven round someone waiting for the right pump and then pulled up at the wrong pump and stretched the hose over the car. They look at me like I've queue jumped. If you're stupid enough to just sit there love, don't complain at me. Grin

stinkingbishop Can I have a pm too about the loose covers pretty please?

scrappydappydoo I get my cheap white vinegar from a Chinese supermarket. A 5 litre carton lasts ages if you put it in a spray bottle.

If you are desperate for a lovely cup of tea/coffee but dont have time to wait for it to cool ,just pour the hot liquid into another cup or jug from about 6 inches away. Then pour back. You may need to repeat several times to get the required temperature but it will be a tiny amount of time compared to waiting for it to cool. Plus you get your cuppa!

Report
LokiDokey · 07/04/2014 18:01

If you fancy a quick cuppa and cant be arsed to boil the kettle for one you can make a tea with a dolce gusto by not putting a pod in and letting the hot water run through into your mug.

Maintenance wash is just your hottest wash, but with nothing in (no clothes, no detergent). Some add bleach or vinegar I think but I don't.

So I run a 90-degree 1400-spin wash which takes about an hour and a half. Might add an extra spin. Do this once a month on the washing machine and dishwasher and it stops smells.
