  1. Have smeared the twins' cradle cap liberally with rapeseed oil, left, combed through, left Dentinox on in the bath for ten mins, rinsed through, and it all came off in big satisfying clumps. I got a bizarre amount of pleasure from this.

  1. I bit the bullet and got Plumbs round to reupholster my awkwardly shaped sofa and it's gorgeous! And the covers are just about less tricky to take on and off than a sleeping bag is to put back in its bag IYKWIM and they're machine washable. I, embarrassingly, may have punched the air. I need to get out more.

  1. Storing complete bedding sets inside one of the pillow cases has led to uncrumpled sheets and duvets that MATCH.

  1. Tomatoes out of the fridge are sweet and juicy.

Sorry, what are soda crystals ? I'm hoping they're available outside the UK, whatever they are. I'm in a very hard water area and I spend a small fortune on washing powered

Re the petrol pump arrow thing, I always just go to the nearest free pump, whichever side it's on. My tip is that the hose will reach over to the other side of the car! No need to wait for one on the same side to become free.

Don't 'oversoak' them secret. I turned mine to mush and had to apply with a scourer...worked though. :)

If you get pollen from lilies on your clothes (a common problem I'm sure you'll all agree) hang the clothing outside on the washing line, through rain and shine for 2 days. When you bring it in the pollen will have magically disappeared and you can wash as normal.

I know sunshine gets tomato based stains out of clothing, but for in the winter, WD40 works too.

Quick spray and wash as normal*

*have only done this on cotton and it works although it may need a re wash to get rid of the WD40 smell

You don't need to knead bread to make a loaf.

400g strong white bread flour
1/2 teaspoon instant dried yeast
1 tsp salt
300ml tepid water.

Mix it together to a sloppy mix, cover with cling and leave somewhere warm overnight.

Next morning, fill sink with suds (you'll see why in a bit) and heat your oven to 450F / 230C / Gas 8. In your oven put a sealed pot (Le Crueset iron type thing or even just a pyrex casserole dish)

Tip the risen 'gunk' onto a floured surface and mould into something a little more rounded loaf looking. You'll then need to wash your hands (thats why you needed the suds!)

After half an hour preheating take out your pot, chuck in the dough and cook for another half hour. After this remove pot lid and let loaf brown for 15 minutes then remove and allow to cool.

Gorgeous, crusty bread!

dishwasher tab on oven door didn't work for me Sad. Is it because my oven door is too disgusting possibly a couple of weeks past it's regular clean?

Itsfab no good adding to watched as it won't be here after a month.
LokiDokey I learned long ago not to bother kneading pizza dough but I've never tried with regular bread. I have weak wrists and joints and kneading hurts. Will try that one thanks.

I have wondered for years what the arrow on the fuel gauge meant! I thought it was some kind of instruction like "GO TO THE GARAGE!!

I know, yourlittlesecret but I am sure it will be added too over the next few weeks giving me plenty of time to read it and retain the brilliant tips.

My tip is I mostly only buy my kids socks from M&S and as with two of the same sex it makes it easier to get the right socks to the right child when you can't remember who has what set.

Oh good a tip thread. I have a problem which is sure to have been solved in a cunning way: a bed on castors which keeps running away with itself on a laminate floor. How to stop it?

I'm thinking castor cups, but these need to have something 'sticky' on the bottom or they will just slide too. Possibly foam? Or rubber? There must be something out there that works!!

What's the microwave white sauce method pls?

Report
CountessOfRule · 07/04/2014 16:30

300ml milk, 25g cornflour, 25g butter.

Mix together roughly in a 1L jug (milk first).

Microwave one minute on full.
Stir.
Microwave one minute on full.
Stir.
Microwave one minute on full.
Stir, muttering "this is never going to thicken."
Microwave for one minute on full.
Voila - smooth white sauce.

There is a recipe but it's quite forgiving.

Generous tablespoon of flour, dollop of butter (prob about a tbsp now I come to think of it). Zap for 30s to mix (keeps the lumps away). Blend in about 300ml milk. Zap for 1m, stir. Repeat the 1m stir bit for as long as it takes to thicken (3/4 times usually works).

Really handy when multi tasking.

Always buy brightly coloured and patterned socks. That way you can easily match them at a glance or get a small child to play a fun matching game and you don't have the problem of having 79 black socks of varying lengths, sizes and fadedness all needing to be paired.
