I love a nice big jigsaw, me. Preferably something like a thatched cottage surrounded by flowers.

I am too embarrassed to do them at home because my 80 year old mother and inlaws who are in their 70s share my enthusiasm and I just think if any of my uber-cool London creative/media-type mates came calling and saw a bugger like that on my dining table they would think I was a very sad case and immediately drop me.

Univ/Only Connect - check.
Cryptic crosswords - check.
Slightly addicted to old British films, preferably B&W, preferably with plenty of location shots so I can work out where it is - check.
Knit, sew, bake, crochet (a bit), generally Make Things - check.
Own far, far, far too many books on too many diverse subjects - check.
Gardening and veg growing - check.
Get enthralled by writers/subjects and then have to read everything by them and in related subjects - check.

Surprisingly, given the above, I also have quite a grown-up job and earn a very decent amount. But I keep thinking that one day I will be unmasked as Super Nerd Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/01/2012 18:30

Loving the general geekery of this thread BUT I don't think how many books one owns is a sign of geekery. I only ever own as many books as fit in the bookcases in our house and we cull regularly but I have read thousands upon thousands of books. I don't think reading books/owning books is geeky in itself - it's to do with what the books are. (Hides multi copies of Austen books which she bought because she felt sorry for them sitting unloved in the charity shop :) )

Terpsichore · 10/01/2012 18:35

Remus, I quite agree. I don't believe that reading books is, in itself, geeky; obviously it's the sign of a well-stocked mind Wink. However, looking at some of the books I own, I have to admit that some are a little, ahem, recherche....

LurcioLovesFrankie · 10/01/2012 18:55

StrandedBear, I think you are my long-lost twin.

Physics (PhD), love maths, write computer code for a living (some of it in Fortran, in fact had to maintain some Fortran77 code at one point) and do stats as part of the job, love radio 3 (have multiple recording of Bach's solo violin works- how anorak is that?), read pop science/linguistics books for fun, come out in hives at the mention of woo-ery (though try to be diplomatic with woo-loving friends). Also love DS's railway more than he does, and love maps (am indoctrinating DS - he asked where his best friend's houses were on the map tonight). I'm also almost into double figures with Lord of the Rings (though not for some years now).

Do occasionally engage in non-geekery - I have read serious novels, played football (though that can prove an excuse for geekery - "clear daylight" and "not involved in play" aspects of the offside rule, anyone?), and got talked into buying a Karen Millen dress in the sales!

GeekLove · 10/01/2012 19:18

I love physics and get to do it everyday for my job. As for my job I say Microscopist otherwise it tends to make people back away.

I am a fan of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchet, Isaac Asimove and decent historical fiction

I have seen all of B5 and the new Battlestar Galactica

I do have an Invader Zimm tshirt mind.

Also a massive fan of Joss Whedon.

I have also married a fellow physicist and have a whole book ase full of board games. We also do Warhammer too.

Have plans to write a toy weather simulation when I get a new laptop.

I also own 2 pairs of high heals which see the light of day about once every 3 years. Most of the time I naturally dress quite goth/greb but it's usually hidden under a grubby lab coat at work.

I also like to sing the theme from Mysterious Cities of Gold when I am alone.
But then you knew that from my name :)

mouldyironingboard · 10/01/2012 19:20

What a great thread!

I have subscriptions to 'astronomy now' and 'classical music' Smile. I've never told anyone before - I can sing all the main themes from Beethoven's 9 symphonies!

DH and I gave each other several puzzles as Christmas gifts including sudoku, jigsaw, mazes and fiddly wire ones while DC looked on in despair at our geekiness (then wanted to join in and help as we started a jigsaw!).

pranma · 10/01/2012 19:21

I love TLotR too and have lost count of number of readings been re-reading since the early 60's :)I love Tolkien including all the bits and bobs-I thought Roverandom was brilliant. The Silmarillion is hard going compared with the rest and I confess to being defeated by The Children of Huron [Christopher doesnt have his father's gift I fear].
I love sci-fi fantasy and have a huge collection.I also love armchair mountaineering and have many climbing books especially relating to the himalayas and the Eiger[Heinrich Harrer-The White Spider set me off].

I love tent pegs. I probably have about a dozen different varieties of tent peg. I like cleaning them and sorting them and putting them in their individual bags. I also love mallets.

I win.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 10/01/2012 19:34

I have to play about 10 games of solitare on the computer before going to sleep. I have a 12% win rate and get very upset if I lose a %. I get super happy if I beat my last hight score.

I have some funky earphones and stroll along wearing them. I used to use them in the gym. Little did onlookers realise I wasnt listen to gansta rap but Rumpole of the Bailey or David Copperfield on Radio 7 Grin

Slubberdegullion · 10/01/2012 19:35

Guy lines too. Have a collection of guys. Guys, pegs, a mallet and a tarp and I am one very happy woman.

I have a spreadsheet for everything. I have a spreadsheet to keep a record of all my spreadsheets. I love nothing more than creating a new spreadsheet. I sometimes dream about spreadsheets.

I also love science fiction, but not Star Trek - that is step too nerdy for me.

Slubberdegullion · 10/01/2012 19:47
happybubblebrain · 10/01/2012 19:50

And I'm always drawing geometric patterns. And I have various collections of things that nobody but me would find interesting. And, if on the rare occasion something is not on a spreadsheet, then it's on a list.

TheParanoidAndroid · 10/01/2012 19:51

Star trek isnt nerdy! How very dare you! snt nerdy!

ISaw3ShipsCatsComeSailingIn · 10/01/2012 19:52

I sent off for the latest Prima knitting patterns today - and I'm only 36 < wails>

CrystalQueen · 10/01/2012 19:52

Not only have I seen every episode, I own Babylon 5 on DVD. (This is nothing to my DH's Doctor Who obsession. He has an online shop selling gaming stuff based on DW and other scifi progrmas).

I can't wait for DD to be big enough so we can tackle my LotR map jigsaw together.

Knitting is a great way to spend time, and there's so much knitting-related stuff to buy.

University Challenge is the only program that I will specifically turn the TV on to watch.

inmysparetime · 10/01/2012 20:03

I like jigsaws, in fact puzzles of any kindGrin
I read manuals for everything (even the hand blender which has but one button!)
I have a collection of interesting rocks I have collected from round the UK, and family holidays invariably involve a trip to a mine and a jaunt on a steam railway.
I have thousands of books on a variety of subjects, arranged by subject and author, with an "outsize" shelf for larger books.
I have several dictionaries, which I consult regularly.
When I went to the Dr Who experience, after exhibiting my encyclopaedic knowledge, I went to the gift shop. My face lit up when I saw a sonic screwdriver wii controller which I immediately bought
I have a physics BSc and an Early Years BA.
I do mad science experiments in school holidays.

trice · 10/01/2012 20:12
