40 + 40 x 0 + 1 =

A- 1
B- 41
c- 0

I say its B-41 as you need to multiply then add. (from what i remember of standard grade maths the acroymym BOMDAS- brackets off, multiply, divide, add, subtract)

DH says its 1.

please tell he's wrong!

Am now pondering brackets and how many possible answers there are:

(40 + 40) x 0 +1
40 + (40 x 0) + 1
40 + 40 x (0 + 1)
and so on...

Itsjustafleshwound · 09/11/2011 22:02

But you can't just put brackets in !!!

It isn't like reading - you don't just do the maths from left to right (as you read in English) - there are RULES!!

The nicest thing about maths is that there is no real room for wriggling - there is no word for a maths pendant !

ohnoshedittant · 09/11/2011 22:13

It's 41. I only have a GCSE, but that's really all I need given that this is covered in primary school.

Nevertooearlyforcake · 09/11/2011 22:15

There isn't a range of correct answers here, there is only one and it's 41. Am quite surprised that so many answered other than this. Was BIDMAS when I were a lass...

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2011 22:20

Much as I am entirely mortified to the nth degree for my initial wrong answer Blush, I do totally agree that the only possible correct answer is 41.

So ner.

minimuffy · 09/11/2011 22:23

10 pages! wtf!

at least we now have a convert and have educated several on bodmas!

plus, proved that i was right, unlike the time you all agreed with DH on what the correct pronunciation of beige was and if 'the back of 7' meant before or after....

OP posts:
lazydog · 09/11/2011 22:28

Why, how did you pronounce beige?? :o

EndoplasmicReticulum · 09/11/2011 22:29

It's 41. And I'm surprised at the lack of maths knowledge among my facebook friends, hardly any of them got it.

minimuffy · 09/11/2011 22:31

i pronounced it with a bee sound at the start as opposed to the bay sound you all say it has! me- beege, DH and you lot- bayge

OP posts:
minimuffy · 09/11/2011 22:31

endo, theres a medic from my work on my fb and she got it wrong too!

OP posts:
ohnoshedittant · 09/11/2011 22:34

do you think this will spark run of 'maths trolls' where they argue 2x3= 12 and 7,000 poster scream NOOOO!

minimuffy I think you could put this on the good deeds thread 'educated several people (inc DH) about BODMAS'.

ohnoshedittant · 09/11/2011 22:35

oh and I'm with your DH on the bayge (didn't partake in the original thread)

minimuffy · 09/11/2011 22:37

everyone is with DH with bayge!!!!!!!!!! :(

ooo second good deed of the day. My first one was calling back the tax credit people after updating DHs new employment details to say that the man who i spoke to was lovely and helpful and could his manager be made aware Grin

OP posts:
HazleNutt · 10/11/2011 06:48

So let's see if we got it.

there is another one on FB now,
5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 x 0 =

20
0
15
40

EndoplasmicReticulum · 10/11/2011 07:05
  1. Probably, it's a bit early and there are too many fives in a row there. But the point is you do the 5x0 as if in brackets.
Kayzr · 10/11/2011 07:08

It's 1.

EdithWeston · 10/11/2011 07:09

15

(as BODMAS applies unless specified otherwise)

trixymalixy · 10/11/2011 07:15

15 to the second question. 41 to the first.

I'm amazed posters are still posting saying the answer is 1!!!! I really thought most mumsnetters would have got this right.

"The level of oaths knowledge is pretty poor on this thread i believe"

Must be a first for Mumsnet...

PacificDogwood · 10/11/2011 07:34

20

And I know plenty of oaths btw

OhYouBadBadkitten · 10/11/2011 07:59
SoupDragon · 10/11/2011 08:10

41 and 15

I seriously can't believe so many are claiming the first one is 1.

41 and 15

Stunned how many people don't know the order of precedence. Hope none of you write software - computers follow BIDMAS. But programmers tend to put in lots of brackets so that its utterly unambiguous to humans - I'd probably have written the original question with brackets as A + (BxC) +D

LeBOF · 10/11/2011 08:21

15 Grin- I could do that one after last night!
