Hello.

As we hope you've already seen, George at Asda were one of the first clothing ranges to sign up to our Let Girls Be Girls campaign.

And now they've phoned us to ask for our help.

The press (who are all over this story today) have contacted Asda to point out that they're selling this T-shirt for girls.

Asda would love to know whether Mumsnetters think it's OK or not.

They say that, as they've signed up to Let Girls Be Girls, they'll take action if we have a negative reaction to the T-shirt.

Please post your comments ASAP - Asda are biting their nails...

Millionth agreement for horrible outfit but not overtly sexual.

For what it's worth I bought a lovely grey pinafore dress with cream l/s top and matching tights (18-24 months) in Asda a few weeks ago.

It was on the reduced rail with quite a few other nice plain bits - it was all of the sloganned/ripped/garish clothes that were being taken left right and centre. So I'm not too sure that people only buy those clothes as that's all there is.

I do like the fact that there are adjustable waists nearly everywhere now. My two are quite skinny and it used to be hard finding trousers for DS, but not any more.

trice · 15/04/2010 11:00

I like George/Asda clothes for girls.

I think the slogan is pretty inoffensive although I don't like the style.

girlscout · 15/04/2010 11:12

Tacky and down market but not sexualised.
Aggeeing with everyone else, I guess.
Tipical ASDA stuff ,you dont go there for decent stuff, if at all. Simerlar niche as primark, but Primark manage to,sometimes ,do it much, much better.

haggisaggis · 15/04/2010 12:16

I agree with other comments. The top is tacky - but has already been said ALL the clothes at ASDA for girls over teh age of 5 are tacky.
PLEASE get the message ASDA - we don't want to dress our pre-teen girls in clothes meant for teens and older.(Mind you, having totally failed to buy dd ANYTHING in Tesco last week, you are not alone!)

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 15/04/2010 12:35

I would advise them not to sell it on the basis that it is just a horrible outfit.

It's not offensive as such (only to a sense of style)

CuppaTeaJanice · 15/04/2010 12:55

MNHQ can we have some feedback please?

Are the ASDA bods going to read this whole thread, or are you just going to report a summary of general MN opinion (because there are loads of good ideas here that go much further than a simple yes/no on the top)?

Have they read any of it already? What did they say? Are they going to pass on our feedback to their design team? Are they going to withdraw the t-shirt from sale?

Please tell us what's going on.....

serenity · 15/04/2010 12:56

Don't like it either, but agree it's not sexualised.

I just want to add the plea for sensible girls tops. I'm fed up with DDs tops ending up somewhere under her armpits when she does anything physical. She has a long body anyway, and this combined with the fashion for short tops means she tends to flash a lot. It's not so much that she shows flesh (she's 6, not a teenager) it's that it means she seems to end up with scratches and grazes across her lower back and belly when she plays, as there's no protection from her clothes. She's actually started wearing some of her brothers old t-shirts for park/outside play instead, and I've unearthed my sewing machine to make her some decent longer length tunics.

Clarissimo · 15/04/2010 13:37

'mind you i think i've seen it all now- i've just opened the Next catalogue this morning to see a pink tshirt for a boy that says `tough enough to wear pink'

Have to say I will be out for that then- ds3 has ASD and adores all things pink but hets horrendously picked on for it.

He can't really speak up for himself so the t-short can do it for him next time there's a non- u day

Clarissimo · 15/04/2010 13:43

WRT to if you wouldnt put it on a boy, don't give it to a girl

if you ahve only DD's take a browse through the boys

bet you wouldn't put those on them either tbh

nappyaddict · 15/04/2010 13:47

I don't like it. Boys clothes never have gorgeous on them which implies girls are only rated for their looks.

Kneazle · 15/04/2010 13:48

"Human Calculator"
"Wonder of the universe"
"Science rocks"

Kneazle · 15/04/2010 13:49

"Wonder of the solar system" I mean

GrimmaTheNome · 15/04/2010 13:54

Some of the ASDA boys Ts are fine. I got DD one recently in a lovely blue with a tiger on it (and some totally indecipherable writing, not a slogan). I'd have got the greeny-aqua iguana one too if they'd had it in her size.
(having failed to find anything at all in the girls section).

Clarissimo · 15/04/2010 14:00

Some are Grimma, but I have bought ds4 some girls clothes as well (striped polo necks a plenty over the winter).

Do teh stores vary in wehich stock they hold I wonder?

The plain ones should be in both sections- asda certainly do have quite a few in the boys atm- and the slogans cut unless they are positive. Mummys monster / trpouble included etc type things are nasty as well.

PMSl at human calculator. Good one.

wheresmypaddle · 15/04/2010 14:12

In my opinion its not sexualised. I don't like it personally but don't think it should be withdrawn on the basis of sexualising girls.

bloss · 15/04/2010 14:43

MathsMadMummy · 15/04/2010 14:51

I don't really like it, sorry Asda! Agree with others that it's not really 'sexualising' as such... not in the same way as the Primark bikini! But then it is saying that being gorgeous is what's important, and it's what the wearer is valued for, which isn't good. So I think it does come under LGBG, just about.

I saw some girl wearing that t-shirt the other day and I thought oh no, not another cheesy slogan. I generally don't like stuff like this, and wouldn't ever buy it for DD. I do get a lot of clothes for DD/DS in Asda though, just stick to patterns/animal stuff which is lovely.

Clarissimo · 15/04/2010 14:59

Oh fwiw

realised my posts may sound as if I am not behind the aims of the campaign

I am, entirely, and I think that it is a very important campaign.

Just in ncase anyone wonders.

SusieCarmichael · 15/04/2010 15:42

some of ASDA's tees are not that bad,, dd has a nice tinkerbell one and i badly wanted to get her the 'where the wild things are' one (in the girls section btw) but we had a very lively discussion in the store where she declared that she 'WOULD NEVER EVER NEVER ...NOT EVER! ....wear it' 'its for boys mummy' i said 'no, its in the girls section' she said 'well, i think someone made a mistake' shes 4 btw

misdee · 15/04/2010 15:47

so...

is asda withdrawing this t-shirt from sale?

SleepyCaz · 15/04/2010 15:57

I am not keen

HelenMumsnet · 15/04/2010 17:27

Hello. We've just had this from Asda:

"Thank you to all who have responded so far - we really value all of your views and opinions.

"There are some really interesting suggestions on this thread, as well as opinions on the T shirt. It's great to see feedback coming on products you'd like to see stocked - such as long plain sleeved tees etc.

"Our plan is to monitor all the feedback, then evaluate and get a general feel for what you are saying, then act accordingly (i.e. pull the T-shirt or not)"

We'll let you know if we hear any more...

Just had a browse in the Asda "older girl" section...a lot of it is very old / "tweenager"-looking IMO. I wouldn't buy it for my DD. The younger girls' stuff on the other hand is quite nice, and would be far more suitable for girls up to 7/8/9 (maybe beyond...my dd is only five so I'm not sure how I'll feel that far down the line).

DuelingFanjo · 15/04/2010 18:37

It's ok.

Apart from the fact that it's minging.

liahgen66 · 15/04/2010 18:44

hate this kind of slogan tops.

Never buy them
