Mars, i too have that problem with my sis, only she likes to buy really messy presents for my kids that you just can't do with three indoors.I tell her every year, please don't get them paint, playdough etc.....and yes every year thats what we get!!!!!!!!! With lots of tears and tantrums afterwards because mummy is a meany for not opening up all the messy stuff!!!
Worst thing is she hasn't got kids for me to do the same with!!! Double

If you are feeling naughty, get her something bloody useless for Xmas

Ok so I had a fabulous night last night. Forgot it was technically the 2nd time DH and I have been out
Was so nice not to be in mother mode for a few hours, get dressed up, (although not corset weather so wench dress had to suffice) and be able to listen to music I love but rarely listen to now as don't want the DCs to have foul little potty mouths. I feel exhausted but exhilarated today.

And the icing on the cake for today...my mum is taking DS1 and DD1 to sleep over at her house tonight so tomorrow I should get a lie in, then only have to get the DTs ready and meet her at the nursery for the fete. Bliss.

I'm thinking of having blue and purple stripy Xmas hair this year, had the stuff but not the time yesterday.

Exhausted myself with my Halloween name, anyone got any ideas for me for Xmas?

Mars - real tree every time. Usually a 6ft one which holds its needles well. We have one of those metal easy stands with a water bowl which you just pop the tree into and water daily.

We always had a fake one when I was growing up, my mum didn't like the mess, expense and hassle of real ones (she was single parent, childminder, with no transport) but as soon as I started working I started buying real trees. I love the look and esp the smell first thing or when you've been out all day and I just adore having a piece of the outdoors inside. I also love the fact that DH always moans about getting a tree, but carries it upstairs and dresses it so perfectly with some help from DS1, while I put xmas music on and dance around with DD1 watching them and taking pics. I did miss that last year.

FG I say "oh God" all the time but I believe in many of them and all the female alternatives. I have a friend who only ever says "oh Goddess". Funnily enough my dad discovered religion when he remarried (to a hardcore church goer who left her family and emigrated to be with my dad) and they consider us to be godless.

My head hurts

ChopsterRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 06/12/2007 13:23

poor estar!

I have a question - how old were you before you found out father christmas isn't real?

dd came home from school yest and said 'fc isn't real, is he?' I was heartbroken! I told her that ppl who don't believe don't get, and she said that she believed, but ds1 doesn't. He is only 5!

I'm trying desperately to keep it going for a bit longer, jsut for the boys really, I don't want BigMouths 1&2 telling them that FC isn;t real.

estarofbethlehem · 06/12/2007 13:45

Kelly, I think I was a similar age to that but for me it was a gradual realisation rather than a shock announcement. I think because my parents had always done it rather tounge-in-cheek I wasn't too traumatised.

Like when we said 'Mum, how come FC has the same writing as you?', she'd say 'Oh, he's very busy so sometimes he needs help to write the labels' but with a wry smile on her face so we weren't sure. She never went down the whole 'Riiight! You're being naughty so I'm ringing Santa to tell him not to bring any presents!' route.

Also Christmas for us was more about Jesus than Santa so it didn't loose all specialness when we found out.

piximon · 06/12/2007 14:02

I think I was around 10, but DS1 keeps asking if I'm sure about Father Christmas and he's only 5. When I was small I went to a catholic nursery/primary and colouring in pics of santa was part of the whole xmas deal, we were never taught he wasn't real at school and were told by teachers that people who didn't believe didn't get presents, but I guess that was easy as everyone held the same views. This year will be the first time the adults in the family won't have a present from FC.

Chops do you usually take them to see Santa? I think a really good santa can brush aside some of the doubts they hold when little. The one I saw at the Bedgebury place convinced me!

DS1 is at a multi-faith nursery which is based in part of a church and the children will perform a song at the service next week which everyone can go to. DS1 finds the whole concept of church really exciting (only been once before has no concept of hell and I'd prefer to keep it that was as long as possible, he thinks all naughty people go to jail, dead or alive) and I'm sure I'll have a tear in my eye at the end of it.

This year I was thinking about taking the DCs to the carols service at a different church (catholic one I went to as a child) I think moving is making me feel a bit nostalgic but not enough to drag me to midnight mass. Since DCs love Xmas songs I thought they might enjoy the carols. I just wonder if they are too young at 3.3 and 4.10? Also is it usually a regular service with carols thrown in or just carols? Any ideas anyone?

TripLetItSnowAndTwins · 06/12/2007 14:18

Chopster, my mom didn't entertain the notion of father christmas, he became mine and my dad's secret, but I always knew he wasn't real

Mars, on your behalf....last year my dearest mother my dts a drum each. I could have killed her!

TripLetItSnowAndTwins · 06/12/2007 14:19

There should be a 'bought' between 'mother' and my btw!

ChopsterRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 06/12/2007 14:38

I don't always take them - it gets so expensive with four of them. There used to be a fantastic sleigh that went round all the streets where I grew up that we used to look out for every year which made it real for us.
dd isn't easily convinced by fake santas anyway, as far as she is concerned he is in the North Pole. She saw a Skih guy dressed up as Santa last year and solemnly informed him that he couldn't be the real santa because he was brown! I was and he laughed and said he was jsut back of his hols.

I have no idea about carol services. The last one I went to, was mostly carols, but lots I had never heard of and it was rather dull. I'm not sure mine would like it very much. Is there a family church near you? They might be a bit more set up for children.
dd school have one, for which they are all traipsing off to the local church for. It's very annoying because it means that I'm supposed to collect her from the other side of town at the same time as picking ds1 from his school.

FrumpytheGrumpyreindeer · 06/12/2007 14:57

I'm not getting it.....who is Isawthreetrips. Am I being stupid? again

Mars, the coat, the coat, the coat. You can only accept with a smile and pass it on. Your poor DD though.

I have DT1 on my knee and its not working.......I'll have to come back to post all my rubbish important thoughts.

FrumpytheGrumpyreindeer · 06/12/2007 14:59

BTW, my dd1 says "blahblah said Santa isn't real". I say "well, where to all the presents come from? If she doesn't believe then her mum and dad will have to buy some and pretend it was Santa"

Anyway, I believe. I still look out the window late at night on Christmas Eve and listen for him and watch for twinkling lights on the sleigh.

ChopsterRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 06/12/2007 15:43

I'm pretty sure it is triplets. Well I was sure til you started asking.

I think now she just is doubting a lot, she is asking questions again today. ds1 is refusing to talk about it. He is getting tired since it's getting late in the school term, and so he gradually gets more and more autistic type symptoms. He's not really talking to anyone much atm - where he is concerned I really hate school!
