Someone at work told me about this. Couldn't believe it at first, but she has called the HMRC & apparently it's right.

Before Child Tax Credits & Working Tax Credit, there was something called Children's tax credit. The Inland Revenue didn't publicise this, so very few people claimed it. Looks like if you were working, and your child was a baby during 2001 - April 2003 you can claim £1049, or £500 or so if you had an older child.

There isn't an awful lot of info on the HMRC site about this (understandably I guess), but you need to go there to downlaod the application form 11CTC
Apparently you can make claims until the end of Jan 2009 and then no more.

The site taxcredits.org seems to explain it all quite well, but beware they are sharks who want to charge you for making the claim on your behalf, when on the face of it, it seems quite simple to complete the HMRC form.

You need your p60 / tax code for the year in question.

As I say, I don't know much about this, and it does almost seem too good to be true, so if anyone else has any info please let us know.

Potentially exciting though, no?

thanks very much. we have applied now. any idea how long before we hear/receive any cash?

rozzyraspberry · 17/01/2009 11:41

If your child was born between 6th April 2002 and 5th April 2003 make sure you get the higher baby rate of £1,049. I was initially only given the normal rate of £529. I had to write a letter in querying it and today (8 weeks later!) got another cheque to make up the rest

Thank you for this thread - I didn't know anything about this rebate until I saw this.

popsycal · 17/01/2009 14:10

i will be eligible for the baby rate too and will query it if I dont get it

RnB · 17/01/2009 15:19

Do you only get one amount or is it an amount per child? I had one child born june 01 and one sept 02...?

DesperateHousewifeToo · 17/01/2009 16:28

Have just dug out Tax calculation form from Tax year '02-'03.

Would this entitlement be part of my 'Personal Allowance' or would it be listed separately under Tax Allowances?

Or would it have been listed elsewhere?

Can't find anything that mentions it but not sure what to look for!

rozzyraspberry · 17/01/2009 17:14

RnB you only get it once - claim for your child born in Sept 02 and you'll get the higher rate.

dinny · 17/01/2009 17:23

argh, help please!

can only find my P60 for up April 2002 (went on mat leave in May 2002 - am thinking my P60 for 2003 got mislaid in work somewhere)

can I claim without P60?

also, how mush should I claim if dd born May 2002?
thanks

cascade · 17/01/2009 17:31

no you dont need p60.
this is what you do, writee a letter to your tax office, state your name, other halfs name and both national insurance numvers.
then state name of child and date of birth.

write the letter stating you wish to claim the child tax allowance of 2003-2003, they will work out how much you get.

send it recorded delivery, this is a must.

cascade · 17/01/2009 17:32

sorry my typing is pretty dire.

cascade · 17/01/2009 17:32

2002-2003 oops

popsycal · 17/01/2009 18:38

ring your local tax office
say you have been ttld you may be eligible foor a child tax allowance rebate for the finanacial year 2002-2003. They will ask for your NI number and tell you immediately if you receievd it then. your dp will have too ring himself and do the same (or speak to the persn on the phne after you) - dh and i are married and they would not tell me if he was eligible even though i had his ni number etc

If you both did not receive it, you are eligible to claim - print out the 11ctc forn
11ctc form here

You are eligible to claim £529 allowance if:

  • You have a child born between 6th April 1986 and 5th April 2003.
  • The child lived with you for all or part of 2002/2003.
  • You worked and paid tax for all or part of 2002/2003.

You are eligible to claim £1,048 allowance if:

You can answer yes to the above questions and one of your children was born between 6th April 2002 and 5th April 2003.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 17/01/2009 19:09

Just loked up my 'local tax office' on hmrc website.

I'm in west london, says my local office is in Edinburgh, lol.

That's Government for you

popsycal · 20/01/2009 17:04

a little bump

Linnet · 20/01/2009 22:27

Dh and I checked at the weekend and we hadn't previously received it. We were advised to print off the form and send it to Leeds, so it was posted yesterday by recorded delivery.

Anyone know how long it takes for the cheque to come through?

saadia · 20/01/2009 22:33

how interesting, does anyone know if you are still eligible to get it if you were on Mat leave for the first few months of 2002?

popsycal · 21/01/2009 09:53

yep
i was on maternity from the june to the december - you have to have paid tax for at least part of the year

moodles · 21/01/2009 10:04

Hi, usually a lurker, but have brought myself out of the shadows just to say we applied for this at the beginning of December and received a cheque for £612 earlier this week. Am really pleased as its much needed cash for us at the moment and just wanted to say thanks to the op for letting us know about this. Right back to the shadows for me

popsycal · 22/01/2009 20:08

.

Lmccrean · 23/01/2009 09:56

I received a cheque for £222.07 this morning. (Based on the "requirements" listed I thought I would be getting the £1,049)

I called my local tax office who said the amount depended on the amount of tax you paid - the more you earnt the more you got as rebate. I havent seen this anywhere.

£222 is better than kick in the teeth, but am writing to them to query amount.

popsycal · 23/01/2009 10:33

sounds weird - I was told it was a flat rate of 500 and something and then 1000 and something if child born in tax year....

Ilovecurry · 23/01/2009 13:36

My hubby has 2 with his ex but they didnt live with us - so can he still claim?

A tax office wouldn't be "local" to you usually to prevent the liklihood of staff knowing the taxpayers.
