Someone at work told me about this. Couldn't believe it at first, but she has called the HMRC & apparently it's right.

Before Child Tax Credits & Working Tax Credit, there was something called Children's tax credit. The Inland Revenue didn't publicise this, so very few people claimed it. Looks like if you were working, and your child was a baby during 2001 - April 2003 you can claim £1049, or £500 or so if you had an older child.

There isn't an awful lot of info on the HMRC site about this (understandably I guess), but you need to go there to downlaod the application form 11CTC
Apparently you can make claims until the end of Jan 2009 and then no more.

The site taxcredits.org seems to explain it all quite well, but beware they are sharks who want to charge you for making the claim on your behalf, when on the face of it, it seems quite simple to complete the HMRC form.

You need your p60 / tax code for the year in question.

As I say, I don't know much about this, and it does almost seem too good to be true, so if anyone else has any info please let us know.

Potentially exciting though, no?

Am confused now.

Are we talking about a tax allowance for a child born in 2002 or a Child tax credit? Or is that one and the same?
And is it based on earnings () or is it a simple allowance like the personal allowance ()?

Lilyloo · 16/11/2008 16:31

this was before tax credits cam in.
We got a letter saying we had had it despite us earning less than 15k between us at the time ?

belcantwait · 18/11/2008 09:42

ok so have been watching this with interest and have decided to go for it! so i have the 11ctc form and will dig out dhs p60- is that all i have to send off? where do i send it to? am v excited - if we get it maybe we could have a holiday yippee!
has anyone heard that they have got the greater amount?
also i have 2 kids born before the date specified but it says i can only claim for one- ds1 was born in 1998 and ds2 was born in 2003 (january). which should i put down?

belcantwait · 18/11/2008 12:49

bumping for me and the others who posted questions

justunaccomplishedmummy · 19/11/2008 13:35

I sent my form off about a month ago. This morning DH got a cheque for £500. Oooooooh I'm so happy, this has sorted christmas out and the bills.

puppydavies · 19/11/2008 13:50

belcant: not sure i'm any authority, have sent form back but not heard whether we'll get it for sure, but will do best to answer questions.

you just need to fill in the form and send it to your current tax office. you don't have to send the p60, that's just for you to check tax codes to see if you've already had it. i would claim for your youngest, born in january 2003, as then you'd get the higher (baby) amount.

citronella it's "children's tax credit" and is a one-off payment. is not based on earnings as such, but if either you or dp/dh was higher rate tax payer the amount will be reduced. is incremental something like £1 docked for every £5 you earned above threshold or something like that.

Hi all, can't quite believe it but I got a cheque this morning for £614!
I read this thread and looked for my p60 about three weeks ago it showed I hadn't had it.
I rang up my current tax office and the guy said I'd had it, when I said my p60 said I hadn't he asked me to send it in.

So sent it in got it back a few days later last week and got the cheque this morning,

Am over the moon, good luck to everyone else.

popsycal · 04/12/2008 21:19

just bumping this up to remind myself to do this

bramblebooks · 05/12/2008 17:07

Bump - have phoned the local tax office today and they've told me I'm entitled. Very pleased - got a few friends who are also entitled.

clayre · 06/12/2008 15:59

still not heard anything, think i'll phone next week, anyone had any good news?

Podrick · 06/12/2008 17:03

In the advice it says if your tax code on your P60 for 2002/03 ends in H or T you have already had the money. Mine does .

Did anyone get money back if they had one of these letters on the end of their code on the relevant P60?

whoingodsnameami · 06/12/2008 17:16

Could I claim without H, as we seperated 8 months ago, anybody know?

whoingodsnameami · 06/12/2008 17:18

Plus I am no longer working, so I dont have a local tax office......right?

AnAngelWithin · 06/12/2008 17:23

I can't find DHs P60 for that year Got all the others! They all have tax code on ending in L.

UnquietDad · 06/12/2008 19:43

Has anyone tried to do this using the downloaded version of the 11CTC form? It says to enter your details and national insurance number in "the boxes above". There are no boxes above when you print it out - just a big white space. Have people been entering their details in the big white space?
