Someone at work told me about this. Couldn't believe it at first, but she has called the HMRC & apparently it's right.

Before Child Tax Credits & Working Tax Credit, there was something called Children's tax credit. The Inland Revenue didn't publicise this, so very few people claimed it. Looks like if you were working, and your child was a baby during 2001 - April 2003 you can claim £1049, or £500 or so if you had an older child.

There isn't an awful lot of info on the HMRC site about this (understandably I guess), but you need to go there to downlaod the application form 11CTC
Apparently you can make claims until the end of Jan 2009 and then no more.

The site taxcredits.org seems to explain it all quite well, but beware they are sharks who want to charge you for making the claim on your behalf, when on the face of it, it seems quite simple to complete the HMRC form.

You need your p60 / tax code for the year in question.

As I say, I don't know much about this, and it does almost seem too good to be true, so if anyone else has any info please let us know.

Potentially exciting though, no?

Dizzy my dd was born on 3rd April 2003 and we got it for her not long after she was born as someone told me about it then. She was due on 6th so we were lucky!

Lilyloo · 22/10/2008 10:53

Lot's about this on money saving expert we sent form off weeks ago and no response not unusual from storys on there so send recorded delivery and it is paid back to you via cheque.

SixSpotBonfire · 22/10/2008 10:55

Two of my DSs were born in that period, but I would have completed a tax return for the years in question so I imagine it would have been picked up by the Inland Revenue - I seem to remember I did get a few tax rebates at the time. But I will download the form and get DH (who is an accountant) to look at it for me. Thanks, TMWOSB.

What happens if you've changed employers though and therefore tax office?

Does it need to go to the old tax office or the new one?

God, hope I haven't had this already, this would make a massive difference at the moment!
