Someone at work told me about this. Couldn't believe it at first, but she has called the HMRC & apparently it's right.

Before Child Tax Credits & Working Tax Credit, there was something called Children's tax credit. The Inland Revenue didn't publicise this, so very few people claimed it. Looks like if you were working, and your child was a baby during 2001 - April 2003 you can claim £1049, or £500 or so if you had an older child.

There isn't an awful lot of info on the HMRC site about this (understandably I guess), but you need to go there to downlaod the application form 11CTC
Apparently you can make claims until the end of Jan 2009 and then no more.

The site taxcredits.org seems to explain it all quite well, but beware they are sharks who want to charge you for making the claim on your behalf, when on the face of it, it seems quite simple to complete the HMRC form.

You need your p60 / tax code for the year in question.

As I say, I don't know much about this, and it does almost seem too good to be true, so if anyone else has any info please let us know.

Potentially exciting though, no?

Gosh, and tomorrow I was going to shred loads of old papers, including all my p60's since 1988 - thankyou for the info. I will claim and see.

SparklyGothKat · 22/10/2008 00:28

I heard about this, its not a scam. DH phoned the tax office and apparently we had it, don't remember getting it anyway I am going to fill that form in and see what happens

Tortington · 22/10/2008 01:19

how do you fill out the form - its a pdf - is there another version or are you printing it off

what of those with no printers?.....off to look for phone number

Tortington · 22/10/2008 01:20

Mumi · 22/10/2008 02:02

Wow, this definitely includes not only my DS but my 21 year old brother, possibly some of my nieces and nephews as well! Thank you so much!

forevercleaningwithmybesoms · 22/10/2008 06:40

was there a limit to the household income during thst time in order to make a claim?

FAQ · 22/10/2008 06:47

wow - thanks for this - I don't think we've got it.......not sure if exH still has his p60/tax code for that year still (may be in my attic in all the boxes of his stuff ) but I shall mention it to him (and yes I know that sounds like I'm being awfully nice to my ex - which I suppose I am - but I know he's in the financial sh*t at the moment....which is only really ever going to have a negative impact on the DS's) - if I'm lucky he may even spit it with me

squatchette · 22/10/2008 06:53

My eldest was born Jan 03 so i would have been on mat' leave then ,wonder if i can claim it.Could do with it at the mo as am skint thanks to tax credits not paying me for over a month and loosing my form for new claim.

FAQ · 22/10/2008 06:54

You are eligible to claim £529 allowance if:

  • You have a child born between 6th April 1986 and 5th April 2003.
  • The child lived with you for all or part of 2002/2003.
  • You worked and paid tax for all or part of 2002/2003.

You are eligible to claim £1,048 allowance if:

You can answer yes to the above questions and one of your children was born between 6th April 2002 and 5th April 2003.

forevercleaningwithmybesoms · 22/10/2008 06:56

is this per child?

I have 3 born between this dates but reckon there must be a limit to what you can earn? Not saying we earned a fortune but have never been able to claim anything before.

FAQ · 22/10/2008 07:00

that 2nd website that was linked to just says you must have earned £6,000+ - doesn't mention an upper limit.

Think it's just the one payment (regardless of how many children)

forevercleaningwithmybesoms · 22/10/2008 07:03

have looked at both the websites, the official HM whatever one says the child must be born between 2001 and 2003 which means mine were too old. last one born 2000. the taxcredits one says between 1986 and 2003. Do you think the official HM one is to put people off?

FAQ · 22/10/2008 07:09

I've just looked at the form - and it doesn't say anything about needing your p60/tax code (than I can see}

Forevercleaning - the form (if you click on it) just says dob of a child who lived with you who was under 16 at the start of the 2002/03 tax year/

forevercleaningwithmybesoms · 22/10/2008 07:32

ok cheers faq - worth giving it a go even if they say no.

FAQ · 22/10/2008 07:37

very true forever - I've just emailed exH the details so he can claim if he wants to - if they say no, they say no - and you haven't lost anything (apart from the price of a stamp and the time filling it in.....and it's not a long form so even that shouldn't take long) - on the other hand they could say yes and you could be up to £1000 better off

hellsbells76 · 22/10/2008 07:58

oh my god! This could save Xmas! Thank you! Ds born 12th April 2002 so just qualifies for the higher amount too hopefully!

needmorecoffee · 22/10/2008 08:01

so not for kids born before then?
Arse.

DaisyMooSteiner · 22/10/2008 08:02

Originally it wasn't a payment but an alteration to your tax code which reduced the amount of tax you paid, so yes, anyone can claim regardless of income as long as you were paying tax that year. It was very simple, no problems if your income changed, no filling out complicated forms. They then abolished it in favour of child tax credits! (Mind you, they still managed to cock it up for us and 'overpaid' us by giving us the wrong tax code!)

hellsbells76 · 22/10/2008 09:23

anyone know where to find the address to send the form back?

hellsbells76 · 22/10/2008 09:25

ignore that - found it

saltire · 22/10/2008 10:24

Can I just ask, I wasn't working but DH was, so would we still be able to apply for this?

CountessDracula · 22/10/2008 10:34

so do they send you money or apply it to your future tax code?

MurderAtTheDiscoDizzy · 22/10/2008 10:40

What about a child that was born on 26 March 2003. Seems too good to be true to be getting money for a child who was only living with us for a couple of weeks?

ComeOVeneer · 22/10/2008 10:43

Where do I find the application form?

sitdownpleasegeorge · 22/10/2008 10:49

Murderatthediscodizzy.

Even if your child was born on 5th April (the last day of the 2002/2003 tax year) you still qualify for the allowance.
