Someone at work told me about this. Couldn't believe it at first, but she has called the HMRC & apparently it's right.

Before Child Tax Credits & Working Tax Credit, there was something called Children's tax credit. The Inland Revenue didn't publicise this, so very few people claimed it. Looks like if you were working, and your child was a baby during 2001 - April 2003 you can claim £1049, or £500 or so if you had an older child.

There isn't an awful lot of info on the HMRC site about this (understandably I guess), but you need to go there to downlaod the application form 11CTC
Apparently you can make claims until the end of Jan 2009 and then no more.

The site taxcredits.org seems to explain it all quite well, but beware they are sharks who want to charge you for making the claim on your behalf, when on the face of it, it seems quite simple to complete the HMRC form.

You need your p60 / tax code for the year in question.

As I say, I don't know much about this, and it does almost seem too good to be true, so if anyone else has any info please let us know.

Potentially exciting though, no?

ooh catweazle how do you know so much?

I am in the process of doing what Cascade said and writing a letter to my tax office with mine and DH's DOB and NI numbers and DS's full name and DOB.

At work I will ask which tax office I should ring and I will phone them to check and see what they say to do......is that right?

Am excited!

Why are some people getting it now and didnt get it at the time?

Majeika · 06/12/2008 22:36

??

NCRedBreastedBirdy · 06/12/2008 22:37

Who - your local tax office is still your local tax office even if you are not earining as it is locality not earnings that decides it! Go Claim!!!

NCRedBreastedBirdy · 06/12/2008 22:40

You had to apply at the time but the whole system was so rubbish that people missed it (hence scrapping it and replacing wwith the current equally crap much better system!)

Yes your tax office will tell you what to send, or just fill in the form.

NCRedBreastedBirdy · 06/12/2008 22:43

TOP TIP

Majeika · 06/12/2008 22:46

Some people seem to have been just a few weeks so yes I would phone. If nothing else you can confirm they have not lost!

UnquietDad · 06/12/2008 23:43

So are you all entering details in the big white space on the form?

Or am I missing something?...

NCRedBreastedBirdy · 06/12/2008 23:56

I did, i think it was originally one that they would have pre-printed with your details for you to check. As it is not printed you just write them in (I think)!

Sending off letter recorded delivery tomorrow! Fingers crossed! Thanks, I had never heard of this until mumsnet!

snigger · 08/12/2008 21:18

AnAngel - go onto hmrc.gov.uk, via the freedowm of information links, and request National Insurance records - you should get them within 30 days, they may be enough to clarify.

Hulababy · 08/12/2008 21:23

DH remembers claiming for this at the time (we remember due to the whole 6 April 02 cut off as DD was born on 5th April). He was inially being told we were eligible and them giving us the money, but then them deciding we weren't due to the financial limits placed on it and them claiming the money back from us.

clayre · 16/12/2008 11:21

WOOOHOOOO just got a cheque for £541.33

mummiof4 · 16/12/2008 13:48

MincePirateCat · 16/12/2008 13:52

i have a vagues memory of it being used in the end of year tax return. I 'think'. Unfortunately dh is now ex dh and any P60's for that time will be long gone. yet I also think, it wouldn't have been taxable would it?

well doen those of you who have had a windfall!! Buy more Baileys I say

Notalonestarofbethlehem · 16/12/2008 13:56

I called to chase my form (sent around nov time) and was told they have a 12 week backlog of post to be opened which conveniently takes them over the deadline. I asked what happens if after the deadline they cannot find it and they have said I will still get my money if I am entitled. I took the persons name but is this correct?

leenasmom · 16/12/2008 22:21

it is true and i did this in the july of 2003 for my child who was born on in jan 2003 got a tax rebate of £600 quid back then so it is true just surprised so many didnt know about it as when i applied for taxcredits they advised me to see if i qualified for the old children tax..

good luck

apuppydaviesisforlife · 19/12/2008 12:27

Bethlehem, there is specific guidance regarding forwarding of ctc applications to the relevant departments within specified dates - did you send it recorded delivery?

There's certainly no conspiracy to avoid eligible claims - there's current guidance to assist new claimants even now, and HMRC are anticipating new claims up till the deadline, so keep chasing progress, or download the form online and send to your local tax office registered before the 31/01/09 deadline so you have evidence of your claim.
