Someone at work told me about this. Couldn't believe it at first, but she has called the HMRC & apparently it's right.

Before Child Tax Credits & Working Tax Credit, there was something called Children's tax credit. The Inland Revenue didn't publicise this, so very few people claimed it. Looks like if you were working, and your child was a baby during 2001 - April 2003 you can claim £1049, or £500 or so if you had an older child.

There isn't an awful lot of info on the HMRC site about this (understandably I guess), but you need to go there to downlaod the application form 11CTC
Apparently you can make claims until the end of Jan 2009 and then no more.

The site taxcredits.org seems to explain it all quite well, but beware they are sharks who want to charge you for making the claim on your behalf, when on the face of it, it seems quite simple to complete the HMRC form.

You need your p60 / tax code for the year in question.

As I say, I don't know much about this, and it does almost seem too good to be true, so if anyone else has any info please let us know.

Potentially exciting though, no?

well ive just checked our p60's as we had our son in feb 03,our tax codes seem to be ok,i only earned just ove 4k and ive just realised that my other half didnt move in til
later in the year,it was such a hectic yr (i have 2 older kids from prev marriage)i know i forgot to claim for my son til much later in the year too, tut.i guess this means that i cant claim as i didnt earn enough and at the time me fella hadnt got round to moving in ggrrrrr, now im peeved lol,i feel like trying to claim anyway but im too scared.

Boco · 04/11/2008 14:32

still mulling all this over,
would we still be entitled to this if my partner claimed? as i said a couple of posts earlier,he didnt move in til later in the year, but still had our son stay at his place regularly at weekends til he did eventually move in.
ive tried to call the number to ask,but got told very quickly to download the forms and send them before i had a chance to explain, but i cant claim as a couple as he wasnt living here and im not sure whether to claim him as single as my son wasnt living with his dad permanantly if you know what i mean,im even confusing myself now lol,but with 4 kids and xmas so close i really could do with the extra :O(

zippitippitoes · 04/11/2008 16:37

what if you didnt have a tax code but filled in a self assessment form

i was divorced with a child born in april 1988

i was self employed but didnt earn much

and dies unearned incomne count towards earnings

Kbear · 04/11/2008 17:32

I just called my tax office (see your P60) and gave my National Insurance number and other details and they told me straightaway whether I had claimed it previously - I hadn't. They can't discuss DH's records with me so he has to phone himself.

If we are eligible to claim we just write in to the address they will give us.

It's that simple to find out. Worth a try.

Kbear · 04/11/2008 19:54

bugger - DH's tax code for 2002-03 states that it was claimed at the time.

oh well!!

Mitchell81 · 04/11/2008 20:27

Do I need to send it to DH tax office at the time or who he works for now?

Kbear · 04/11/2008 21:28

call his current tax office and ask them to check

zephyrcat · 04/11/2008 21:43

I hate stuf like this, I've read the whole thread and am still confused!

DD1 was born Dec 2001. DP was working full time, I wasn't working at that time. Should I be applying for anything?

Sorry to be asking thick questions - tired

Kbear · 04/11/2008 22:04

Just get hold of DH's current P60, get him to ring the tax office number printed on it and say you are enquiring whether you received Children's Tax Credit for 2002/2003 and they will say yes or no and tell you what to do if you can claim. Simple. He will have to speak to them though, they won't discuss with anyone else. They have all the records right in front of them and can tell from his tax code in that year whether he already got it.

MrsSanta · 04/11/2008 22:22

Not read all the thread but this is my story.

After sending in a letter 6 weeks ago signed by dh & me i heard nothing. Today I called local tax office who said the year in question 2001/2002/2003 it was mainly the man who claimed the tax credits and in my case dh did nt get this EXTRA benefit. she was sending us out a T form.

Its worth a call and to explain your circumstances, ie divorcd/seperated/newly together.

scaryteacher · 05/11/2008 07:21

Also, if one of you earned over a certain amount of money, then the credit is restricted.

LynetteScavo · 05/11/2008 07:43

i've just realised, that as DS was born on 18/4/03, we will have just missed out - won't we?

mummiof4 · 05/11/2008 13:37

i have just posted a letter to my dh tax office and given them the info i think they need,my sons full name and d.o.b ,my full name d.o.b and n.i. number along with my dh info plus p60,im pretty sure weve not had it but its worth a shot ,good luck with it,ill let you know how it goes

DaisyMooSteiner · 05/11/2008 13:50

Not really Lynette because you were able to claim Child Tax Credit from April 03 so you would have had that instead.

LynetteScavo · 05/11/2008 13:56

Oh, OK, I feel better now

I also got higher maternity pay with DS being born a couple of weeks later...so I can't complain!

puppydavies · 05/11/2008 20:56

just bumping this to keep it up top. am over moon, it looks as though we should qualify for dd1 as we haven't already had it. thanks so much for starting the thread and for whoever posted on it last when i saw it in active convos yesterday!

i owe you lot a pint (as hopefully do loads of my mates, am spreading word )

cazboldy · 07/11/2008 12:27

Thanks so much for posting this - looks like we may be entitled to some money - and my sister to the higher amount!

Scotia · 07/11/2008 18:57

Has anybody heard from their tax office yet?

clayre · 07/11/2008 19:01

i dont think i will hear back, it has only been a fortnight since i sent he form away so maybe a bit soon, althou how long can it take to type national insurance numbers into a computer to find out if we are entitled to it!

Mitchell81 · 07/11/2008 19:51

Sent letter off yesterday, I wonder how long they take to get back to you?
