Someone at work told me about this. Couldn't believe it at first, but she has called the HMRC & apparently it's right.

Before Child Tax Credits & Working Tax Credit, there was something called Children's tax credit. The Inland Revenue didn't publicise this, so very few people claimed it. Looks like if you were working, and your child was a baby during 2001 - April 2003 you can claim £1049, or £500 or so if you had an older child.

There isn't an awful lot of info on the HMRC site about this (understandably I guess), but you need to go there to downlaod the application form 11CTC
Apparently you can make claims until the end of Jan 2009 and then no more.

The site taxcredits.org seems to explain it all quite well, but beware they are sharks who want to charge you for making the claim on your behalf, when on the face of it, it seems quite simple to complete the HMRC form.

You need your p60 / tax code for the year in question.

As I say, I don't know much about this, and it does almost seem too good to be true, so if anyone else has any info please let us know.

Potentially exciting though, no?

I filled mine out last week. You send it off to your tax office that you are with now, as they have all your details from previous and present employment. The lady on the phone told me that you just write a letter stating your name and partners (if applicable) both of your national insurance numbers and dates of birth. Plus the childs full name and date of birth. You can send yor P60, but if you havnt got them, dont worry, as they can look up on the computer your previous earnings and whether the tax allowance was or wasnt given to you.

clayrethechildslayre · 22/10/2008 21:37

am just a bit wary after the tax credits fiasco left us paying money back till dd is 10

cascade · 22/10/2008 21:58

this isnt tax credit though, it is a tax allowance. If your not intitled they will know by your tax code. Go for it youve got nothing to loose.

cascade · 22/10/2008 21:59

lose

HRHSaintMamazon · 22/10/2008 21:59

oooh may have to look into this.

loppylou · 23/10/2008 00:59

TheMoistWorldOfSquelchedBrains · 23/10/2008 20:30

Ooh hallo, I've been in RL for the last couple of days, glad so many found this

Ex-P & I have checked & we definitely didn't get it at the time, so have sent off the appliation today & are crossing our fingers that it all works out.

And I am in ex-P's good books because he had no idea about this & is now V happy that I may have helped him get a nice windfall

May not be such a lean Christmas after all [optimistic]

Really hope lots of you are entitled to this

Not means tested. But I think it's reduced if you were earning enough to be taxed at 40% AFAIK.

notsofarnow · 24/10/2008 21:51

hmmm i have one born in 2003 but two in 1992 94 wonder what i can claim for them. Probably have not got p60's though have moved loads so not a clue where they would be. Someone else link to form please.

TheMoistWorldOfSquelchedBrains · 24/10/2008 21:56

Hi notsofarnow. It seems P60 not necessary, but you need to check your tax code to be sure you haven't had it yet (if it's h or t, yo have). I would think you can find out what tax code you were on either by contacting your employer at the time, or the tax office.

The link is in the OP. Click on 11CTC, and again when the HMRC page opens.

This seems to good to be true. DD1 was born on 24th March 2003. DH def didn't claim anything.

triplets · 27/10/2008 15:23

This has made me sit up! Do we stand a chance of claiming then for triplets born in Jan 1998, hubby then took early retirement in March 2 months after they were born?

surprisenumber3 · 27/10/2008 21:24

I have just been told a cheque is on it's way in next few days

You are entitled to it if you had a child under 16 who you get child benefit for tax year 2002/2003 (too late to claim for 2001/2002 now). You have til January 2009 to claim.

If your tax code was the basic code, 461L, then you can claim. Mum or dad can claim, as long as they were living with the child at that time.

surprisenumber3 · 27/10/2008 21:26

by the way, I didn't send P60's or anything. Just my NI number and they sorted the rest.

surprisenumber3 · 27/10/2008 21:29

me again!

I have read at the beginning of this thread about the 11CTC form. When I began this process about 4 weeks ago, I was told this form wasn't used anymore and when I tried the link to it there was nothing there - seems they have put it back on!

I just wrote a letter.

will be nice to receive for Christmas though!

cheerycherry · 27/10/2008 21:29

surprisenumber3 how long did it take to get a decision?

surprisenumber3 · 27/10/2008 21:32

I first wrote 4/5 weeks ago. I had a letter back a week later asking for details of my partner at that time.

I wrote in with my answer but called last week to see how it was going and they hadn't received letter.

called again today and was told there was a note put on this morning saying 'refund issued'.

KaplumbagaBloodyBones · 27/10/2008 21:32

I have no way of finding out what XPs tax code was back then so can i still claim or does it have to be him? And will the money come to me?
