Someone at work told me about this. Couldn't believe it at first, but she has called the HMRC & apparently it's right.

Before Child Tax Credits & Working Tax Credit, there was something called Children's tax credit. The Inland Revenue didn't publicise this, so very few people claimed it. Looks like if you were working, and your child was a baby during 2001 - April 2003 you can claim £1049, or £500 or so if you had an older child.

There isn't an awful lot of info on the HMRC site about this (understandably I guess), but you need to go there to downlaod the application form 11CTC
Apparently you can make claims until the end of Jan 2009 and then no more.

The site taxcredits.org seems to explain it all quite well, but beware they are sharks who want to charge you for making the claim on your behalf, when on the face of it, it seems quite simple to complete the HMRC form.

You need your p60 / tax code for the year in question.

As I say, I don't know much about this, and it does almost seem too good to be true, so if anyone else has any info please let us know.

Potentially exciting though, no?

I had ds in December 02 when now xp was working so would I be entitled ??

I also have no way of finding out xp's tax code, so how would I go about claiming.

surprisenumber3 · 27/10/2008 21:34

they will probably ask for his name and NI number if he was living with you at the time.

If he hasn't claimed it and you do, then the money will come to you!

surprisenumber3 · 27/10/2008 21:36

I'm pretty sure you get the higher amount if you had a baby under one in 2002/2003 tax year, just over a grand!

KaplumbagaBloodyBones · 27/10/2008 21:38

Argh did we have to be living together in 2002/2003 to claim? I have 2 DS's born 97 and 99.

IllegallyBrunette · 27/10/2008 21:41

omg really.

I might be able to find his national insurance number on some old tax credits stuff.

I don't get anything for dd1 and dd2 do I ?? They were born in 11/1997 and 12/1999.

IllegallyBrunette · 27/10/2008 21:43

Surprise, can I ask where you write to and also roughly what you put in the letter as I am crap with anything like this.

IllegallyBrunette · 27/10/2008 21:54

Right, have printed the form off but am confused already.

It says you can only claim for one child in the family and thats normally the youngest. However my ds wasn't born until Dec 02 so we weren't recieveing child benefit for him for the whole of tax year 02/03.

Should I put the claim in for dd2 instead ?? She was born in Dec 1999.

IllegallyBrunette · 27/10/2008 21:58

Meant to add that in the notes on the form it says that if it was your partner who had the higher income then you can only claim 50%.

MamaG · 27/10/2008 22:37

oh thanks for this, will give it a go! No P60s but worth a try

babyboo1and2 · 27/10/2008 22:39

can i ask a question please

i earnt a bit more than my husband between 2002 -2003

his tax code for that year ends with a t but mine ends with an l

he has just got a pay rise which may take him into higher tax rate (not sure what this figure is)

would we get anything? if i had higher income then but now he (may) get higher tax rate would the amount be deducted by £1 per £15 over threshold?

thanks

surprisenumber3 · 27/10/2008 23:32

First I phoned my tax office and asked my tax code.

then I wrote a letter to my tax office saying that I wished to claim child tax allowance for 2002/2003 as I hadn't received it as my tax code for that year was 461L.

They then wrote back asking for my partners details but I called them and said I was separated and had been living separately since 2001, they said only I could claim it then.

It doesn't matter which child you claim for, as long as they were under 16 at the time. but if you had a baby born 2002/2003 then claim for that one as it would be a higher payment for a baby under one!

triplets · 27/10/2008 23:43

So does this mean my trips born in 1998 don`t count?

surprisenumber3 · 27/10/2008 23:49

yes they do count! anyone who had a child under 16 in 2002/2003.

triplets · 27/10/2008 23:56

Thank you, please tell me briefly what we need to do, I am tired, alot going on in my life atm. 10yr old trips and DH going into hospital tomorrow for liver surgery as he has cancer

IllegallyBrunette · 28/10/2008 07:47

Triplets, all I have done so far is print of the form listed at the beginning of the thread, and filled it in.

I am just going to send that with a covering letter explaining what I am claiming for and then cross my fingers.

I googled the address of my local tax office.

IllegallyBrunette · 28/10/2008 07:50

On the form you can only list one child, but in your covering letter you can explain that you have triplets and include any other information that you feel is relevant.

clayrethechildslayre · 28/10/2008 07:52

i posted my form recorded delivery on saturday, now just keeping my fingers crossed!

triplets · 28/10/2008 12:33

I dont think we will get it as hubby had retired in 98 to help bring up the trips, though he did pay tax on his Merchant Navy pension and so has P60s, anybody know from the form?
