You're exactly right. Benefits obviously have their place to support those who can't work, have additional costs due to a disability etc, but the fact there's a mum on this post saying she sends her kids to private school and works part time out of choice, and receives £1000 a month in benefits proves this system needs an overhaul. I know plenty of parents who have got a ADHD diagnosis for their child(ren) and are financially "rewarded" despite thier children's needs having no (or very little) financial impact on the family. My daughter has sensory issues, and I spend an absolute fortune having to purchase seamfree specific clothing, bedding, shoes as she cannot tolerate standard things. Same with foods, she has a very specific diet that costs a lot more than my non sensory child. I haven't sought a diagnosis for my child, as I don't want to put a label on her or claim money "because I can". It's my job as a parent to support and provide for my child, and the extra I have to find to buy her specialist items mean i have to work a lot more hours than I'd like to. But that is life. This mentality of "I'm entitled to it" needs to stop. Then the people who actually really do need the extra help and support will be able to get it without having to jump through hoops.

Disability benefits are based on extra care needs not diagnosis. The only person you're hurting by not getting her a diagnosis is your daughter. A 'label' can actually get her real world support she needs in education, work places, if she struggles at airports, concerts, grocery shopping. Everyday real life things she has a right to enjoy.

So there needs to be a better way of assessing claimants and their needs. Instead of cash , perhaps extra physio or other therapies, more aids in the house supplied etc.

Or the gov could just provide this in the first place and then people wouldn't need to claim pip (or as much pip). Why aren't they providing it already?

So the IMF is being unreasonable?

Didn't read quoted post properly.

emuloc · 15/10/2026 17:12

This thread just highlights a lot of posters ignorance about disability, and the impact that it has on people's lives, and finances. Anybody, as it has been pointed out on the other zillion threads like this, can become disabled.

In that very extreme situation I would claim what I was entitled to, like everyone else! In the past I have been in a position where I could have claimed, but didn’t until I really had to.

I am really sick of benefits and the entitlement culture in this country. We need to go back to telling people if they want something, go out and work hard to get it. Don't just fill in a form and claim PIP, don't get 5 public sector jobs and then go off sick from all of them until you are found out. Go and get a (legal) job, work hard, get paid, and then save up until you can afford the thing that you want. That's how it used to be, and that's how it should be again.

You do realise that many PIP/ADP claimants work, don’t you? And that’s because the benefit helps them to do that? Or that many claimants worked until they no longer could, or weren’t wanted by their employers? ‘Reasonable adjustments’ don’t stretch to paying someone else to do your job for you.

I’m sick of people like this poster who aren’t able to think critically and realise it’s a very nuanced subject.

The quoted poster is very narrow minded.

No one gives a fuck that we have to pay 30k a year to even get our children an education and most people cheered when we were hammered for another 20%….so no, I give zero fucks. I just feel smug that tax payers now fund 15k of it 😀

Or you could have just got an EHCP and tax payers would have funded it anyway 😂.

Sigh, sometimes what is provided on the NHS, is not suitable for some people, and they have to still buy their own aids, extra supplies, etc.

To be clear, approximately 16% of PIP claimants are in any type of work. Which is why means testing it would be an expensive folly.

This government can't "balance the books". They've squeezed the taxpayer as much as they can, they've attacked farmers and destroyed family farms, put more costs on businesses, all to no avail.
Government Departments have been told there is no more money, they have to work with what they've got.
They are committed to Defence Spending upgrades
So now they're going to try and cut benefits......

and the reason there is no cash is because

Bozo, Sunak and the other shiny-suited spivs rinsed the country for 14 years and ran off in 2024, leaving an empty safe and a infinitesimal IOU to the present day and long into the foreseeable

"PIP as a lifestyle choice"

What exactly do you mean with that?

To give you an example, my BIL has a mild disability which doesn’t need specialist equipment or medication. He will freely admit the disability doesn’t hamper him in life and spends it on cruising.

Because the system is complex and hard to navigate?

Go to work you say? What about the people that can only work because they have been awarded PIP? Take their PIP away and guess what? They can't work.

Some of us require other things than just equipment - higher heating and water bills, higher food bills, taxis, etc

While the IMF cannot change the forthcoming UK budget itself, its disapproval would act as a massive signal to global investors. A negative review from the IMF can trigger financial turmoil, leading investors to dump the pound or UK government bonds (gilts), which could dramatically force up the government's borrowing costs, which are already high.

Were the UK government get to the point where it ran out of money and needed a bailout, the IMF could gain direct control of the UK’s budget.

In that (extreme) scenario, the IMF would likely force the UK government to implement strict austerity measures, tax hikes, or spending cuts as a condition for receiving a loan.

Given the above it’s not unreasonable to take heed of the IMF’s position!

lol.

genuinely lol

the imf have never ever taken control of a countries budget nor are they likely to do so.

they issue many many reports on many countries throughout the world and they often warn about things.

this does not mean that the things then come to pass.

The imf is an international institution governed by its rules. It has specific jobs to do including training officials from low and middle income countries in financial policy making, being a lender to governments and advising on economic policy.

it absolutely is NOT capable of nor would it want to run a country.

if you require information on the IMF their website is very clear on what they do.

https://www.imf.org/en/about

also they are not the bond markets nor do they control the bond markets.

yes, Andy Burnham has a line to walk between keeping the government reasonably financially stable but he also needs to have the country on side for welfare cuts and Keir Starmer notably failed on that.

Andy is doing a good job so far.

if PIP went completely then the vast majority of the money that goes on it would simply be spent by social care instead as an awful lot of people on pip are relatively elderly and either in a care home or in receipt of a care package at home or in sheltered housing/a group home.

it genuinely will not save much money to get rid of it and it will cause a lot of suffering that will make the news and swing opinion against the government.

people now are all up in arms about they all know someone who has a kid with adhd who is scamming the system but when their dad gets cancer and gets told he isn’t eligible for any benefits because disability benefits don’t exist anymore and he needs to work until he dies…. Well, that’ll piss people off much more.

About the IMF

The IMF is a global organization that works to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity for all of its 191 member countries.

Do you know how long waiting lists already are for therapies and physio? All that will do is make waiting lists longer and take away people's option to pay for private therapies and physio.

I don’t think we’d get to the point where the IMF take over. I do think the IMF can push bond yields up.

Ultimately - asking how the country can continue to fund a growing welfare bill when borrowing costs are increasing is sensible, not unreasonable.
