Just because it’s not obvious doesn’t mean they don’t have extra expenses . Do they need more transport, specific food or clothes etc due to sensory issues?

There are big issues with the fiscal management of this country and I am confused why there are so many trends about PIP recently. Why go for the disabled first?

Easy pickings, low hanging fruit. That is why some people are targeting disabled people as a financial problem/ burden. They have been primed to, by successive Governments, and the press. Just like single mothers were, at one point, and now immigrants, and the disabled. Such fun.🙄

The whole benefits system needs overhauling. No Government wants to or is able to do this. Can’t be clearer than that!

But what does 'one in six benefit claimants have no extra costs linked to their disability 'even mean? I mean, so what?

It is not clear at all. To me anyway.

Am I right in assuming you think the people who don't have extra costs linked to their disability should no longer receive PIP?

There are formulas to help work out how many people need to be surveyed to get an answer that is accurate

Please point me to these formulas you'reevidently knowledgeable about

and I can crunch the numbers to see if a sample size of 2600 is statistically robust to accurately describe the trend for the 4 million claimants........

The IMF are frequently unreasonable.

being an international institution doesn’t stop them being wrong. They are known to have particular ways of seeing the world.

While the IMF cannot change the forthcoming UK budget itself, its disapproval would act as a massive signal to global investors. A negative review from the IMF can trigger financial turmoil, leading investors to dump the pound or UK government bonds (gilts), which could dramatically force up the government's borrowing costs, which are already high.

Were the UK government get to the point where it ran out of money and needed a bailout, the IMF could gain direct control of the UK’s budget.

In that (extreme) scenario, the IMF would likely force the UK government to implement strict austerity measures, tax hikes, or spending cuts as a condition for receiving a loan.

Given the above it’s not unreasonable to take heed of the IMF’s position!

There are loads of additional expenses.
Society is becoming so nastily ableist and it breaks my heart. Why can’t people appreciate how lucky they are that they aren’t disables rather than attacking and belittling those that are.

This government can't "balance the books". They've squeezed the taxpayer as much as they can, they've attacked farmers and destroyed family farms, put more costs on businesses, all to no avail.
Government Departments have been told there is no more money, they have to work with what they've got.
They are committed to Defence Spending upgrades
So now they're going to try and cut benefits......

It's so bloody hard to get PIP and the amount that you have to prove.
I have several conditions which affect my ability to work full time and I was turned down for it. 2 of my kids that had DLA as children and EHCPs at school were not awarded PIP. Only one of mine got it.

What are you trying to save money for out of disabled people??

Yes, it does feel like this is what the OP is doing. Trying to take money off disabled people! Hmm

BluebellBeth · 15/10/2026 17:02

Sirzy · 15/10/2026 16:52

If we want to try to reduce the number of people claiming benefits such as PIP we need to tackle the root causes not leave people struggling. We need better mental health services, especially for young people. We need shorter NHS waiting lists so people don’t even up deteriorating further while waiting. We need better support in place to help people work (I know PIP isn’t an out of work benefit but many claim it because they are unable to work)

we need an education system that is fit for purpose and works for everyone not just the academic.

this really is a case of prevention is better than cure. But that takes time and investment and won’t save money overnight so people won’t accept that!

attichoarder · 15/10/2026 17:03

The system needs overhauling, it’s clear that it’s not working. Whilst there is a need for benefits there are some who are claimed the be fits who in my view should no longer be entitled to - the examples on the thread show this whilst I have seen examples myself, yet these are anecdotal but also this has been found in other reviews. It’s not a case of benefit bashing. I accept others will have different views and opinions which is why a full review is probably needed to ensure a revised system listens to those views and is able to balance concerns

OonaStubbs · 15/10/2026 17:03

I am really sick of benefits and the entitlement culture in this country. We need to go back to telling people if they want something, go out and work hard to get it. Don't just fill in a form and claim PIP, don't get 5 public sector jobs and then go off sick from all of them until you are found out. Go and get a (legal) job, work hard, get paid, and then save up until you can afford the thing that you want. That's how it used to be, and that's how it should be again.

So there needs to be a better way of assessing claimants and their needs. Instead of cash , perhaps extra physio or other therapies, more aids in the house supplied etc.

Redsofacushionsandsnacks · 15/10/2026 17:04

It is very clear that the system needs an overhaul. I don’t doubt that the vast majority of disabled people who do report extra costs, don’t get those costs anywhere near covered. That is wrong.
In terms of the age group reporting no extra costs, they are primarily 16-24. They are most likely to be claiming higher rate for a combination of anxiety, depression, autism or ADHD. Perhaps I am wrong but I imagine the costs associated with a primary disability of anxiety would be far less than the costs of someone with say, severe cerebral palsy?

I receive PIP and most of my costs are ‘hidden’ and hard to quantify - does that mean I shouldn’t receive it?

I also agree with a previous poster that there needs to be a lot more investment in the NHS and early intervention especially where mental health is involved.

Disability equipment isn't a fucking want

Many disabled people can't work. What do you suggest they do?

I suspect you know nothing about pip and what it's really for

You don’t think others might also like to attend all their children’s sports events? Yet they are paying for you to do so.

No one gives a fuck that we have to pay 30k a year to even get our children an education and most people cheered when we were hammered for another 20%….so no, I give zero fucks. I just feel smug that tax payers now fund 15k of it 😀

That’s really bloody helpful to people who would never be able to hold a job down through no fault of their own.

Do you think that everyone should have their costs individually calculated. Do you think that will be cheaper?

Not with the number of extra staff they’d need to hire and the additional premises they’d need to bring each claimant in every, say, two years.

I know from my experience working in a centralised government function that the number of staff needed to deliver an effective service, using the same old IT systems as they can’t afford new, just kept going up and up and up.

I don’t think a PIP exercise as described by the Resolution Foundation would save a single penny.

TheFairyCaravan · 15/10/2026 17:06

I lost my ability to work because of my disability so we lost a whole salary. No amount of PIP will make up for that. If I sat down and added up everything I’ve had to buy, all the advanced payments on my essential cars, all the extra heating I need etc the PIP I’ve received wouldn’t touch the sides.

People are so ignorant when it comes to the costs of being disabled. They think we’re all driving round in our free 🙄 cars living the good life which couldn’t be further from the truth.

No, but they may need other kinds of help other than cash payments, therapy, extra physio or, adaptations to the home for example.

Oh Christ, not another bloody survey. There's been umpteen of the bloody things about this, that and the other just lately.

Dontcallmescarface · 15/10/2026 17:11

By "no extra costs" are they talking about day-to-day extra or no extra at all? I don't have extra day-to day costs, but sometimes I do have extra.
