I think they should do away with child benefit all together, save in the admin costs and help encourage a culture of sensible fiscal family planning.

Or, implement a French style model where it is effected by way of an increase to personal allowance (from a tax perspective).

We can no longer trust parents to make sensible decisions. I think it should all be rerouted into breakfast, lunch and dinner clubs at schools so the state can at least control what they eat and do after school, and they just go home to sleep pretty much.

Constantrunner · 15/10/2026 22:19

Child maintenance usd to be counted as income for benefits. But so many fathers were simply not paying the maintenance they were supposed to, that the benefit system had to scrap this system.

Just fund yourself. You’re an adult.

I am an adult on LCRWA and PIP.

Who did they ask? My DD would have no clue what her disability costs me and would probably say "nothing"

Why is everyone assuming they asked the teenagers? Presumably the researchers are professionals in their fields and would know that teenagers are obviously not going to be sighted on the additional costs and thus ask those that are financially responsible for them?

I think it’s a rabbit hole to assume the researchers asked clueless teenagers and as a result got the wrong answer!

The implication is they are not the most vulnerable in all cases

i was always told PIP was for additional help and expenses. Not just a little treat

Define "little treat".

For a neurotypical person, a ready meal instead of scratch cooking is a little treat. For me (autistic), it's often the difference between eating or going hungry when I get home from work. I used all my energy and brain power at work and have nothing left for feeding myself when I get home.

One person's little treat is another person's coping mechanism.

A lot of people are exhausted after work.

Yes, but you are comparing yourself to disabled people.
Apples and oranges.

You need to stop reading the sun and find a new hobby that does not involve victimising people with disabilities.

I am so sick of these random threads from right wingers who know nothing about living with disabilities and are too daft to realise that disabled people are just another scapegoat that the right wing media picks on because, god forbid, rich people could actually be asked to pay their fair share of tax if people stopped falling for their propaganda that disabled people and foreigners are responsible for the UK's cost of living crisis...

Can you define what you mean by “rich” please?

I’m assuming not the top 10% as they already pay more than 60% of income tax which is presumably already more than their fair share.

So who specifically do you mean, and how much should they be paying for it to be fair?

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 15/10/2026 22:26

ExpectMore · 15/10/2026 22:18

But why should those that have been prudent and provisioned for their retirement be penalised when those that haven’t been (as they either couldn’t be or decided to piss their money up the wall instead) aren’t?

Why should those who are unfortunate enough to be disabled be penalised for something that was never their choice? You can't argue to keep the State Pension for all and argue that PIP should be means-tested, that's plain hypocritical.

A lot of people are exhausted after work.

There's "tired" and there's "walking into things levels of dizzy" and "turn all the lights off levels of photophobia". My autism looks like the latter two.

So turn the lights off why does that need PIP.

Land value tax will hit the biggest landowners with the primest, most valuable land and they can't hide it in the Cayman Islands.

Farmland isn't all that valuable, not compared to London urban real estate.

So taxing people who bought their house cheap 40 years ago, who don’t actually have the cash to pay it?

You have missed the point entirely… I simply advocated for pensions not to be means tested.

I said nothing in relation to PIP being means tested. You’ve invented that bit.

I think we worked out on another thread if we actually did this it wouldn’t even cover the cost of SEN school taxis for 4 counties or similar.

How do I get this insurance with disabilities that I’ve had from birth at a reasonable price? Can you recommend me a provider?

You’re missing the point.

PP was stating people should be careful what they wish for as they never know what’s around the corner ie the event hasn’t happened yet. Thats what insurance is for…

Clearly insurance isn’t for events that have already happened…by definition.

However, there are still ways to get insurances for yet to come events that discount your history. Many insurances that you can buy through workplaces operate like this. I’ve personal experience as I’ve had to go down this route for a few insurances for a couple of reasons (one medical meaning insurers don’t touch it, the other I do what insurers consider high risk activity so exclude it).

So it’s possible. But clearly only for risks yet to materialise

CassandraWebb · 15/10/2026 22:40

They can apply for PIP.

They can. But not everyone qualifies. That doesn't mean they don't have debilitating and expensive conditions, just that they don't quite meet the criteria.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 15/10/2026 22:32

So taxing people who bought their house cheap 40 years ago, who don’t actually have the cash to pay it?

  1. The tax is on the value of the unimproved land in its current setting, not the house built on it.
  2. Land value tax will precipitate a long-overdue downward correction in house prices as land becomes a tax liability instead of a pure asset. This will help more people to get on the housing ladder.
  3. If you can't afford your home, downsize, we are constantly told. Anyone who finds that the unearned wealth in the form of the massive value increase of the land their house stands on is too much to pay the tax on is free to move somewhere with a lower land value.
