I think this is really generous given all their medical care and prescriptions will be ‘free’

Is it, who told you that?

People in receipt of PIP alone do not automatically qualify for free prescriptions. It's dependent on the condition, or if you also qualify for other benefits like Income Support.

At some point the parents die.

most parents do take care of their children with disabilities often until the parents die.

at that point an adult who often has very little life experience gets to deal with the benefits system on their own.

They usually end up in care of some kind of- group home or over 55 sheltered housing.

What’s the alternative? I’m convinced the future will be HMOs teeming with anxious NEETs while the tiny pool of functioning taxpayers tries to cling on to the edge of the abyss.

Exactly.. hardly a one off is it.

Carers aren't free. Extra heating isn't free. Extra use of water isn't free. Adaptions to homes aren't free. Decent wheelchairs aren't free. Taxis aren't free. Even simple aids aren't free. Clothes that need to be replaced due to extra wear due to disability aren't free.I could go on and on.

Ableism seems to be freely available though. So there is that.

twocrumpets · 15/10/2026 17:42

They should stop it in these cases. We spend more than my son’s PIP on pads, wipes, nebuliser masks, skin creams, slip sheets, tissues, alcohol wipes, extra splints… we can easily prove where every penny goes. I believe we should be audited to prevent piss taking for sure. I’d be happy to scan receipts to stop us all being labelled as grifters.

RaggedRocks · 15/10/2026 17:42

Why not give vouchers that can be used to pay for the extra things disabled people need instead of money?

RaggedRocks · 15/10/2026 17:43

Then they couldn't spend it on weed, nail bars etc.

Interpreters aren't "free"....they can be bloody expensive.
Taxis aren't "free"
Home adaptations aren't "free", the list goes on.

There are loads of additional expenses.
Society is becoming so nastily ableist and it breaks my heart. Why can’t people appreciate how lucky they are that they aren’t disables rather than attacking and belittling those that are.

It's about all of it isn't it? Society is becoming awful towards disabilities, minorities, women - anyone that's not white British male imo and to blame each other instead of those in power for how shit this country is. Kindness is becoming a rare commodity.

That’s been discussed so much and goes down like a cup of cold sick! Apparently vouchers could be misused. In theory it’s a great idea.

Because that’s ’degrading’
Because ‘why should I have to account for my spending’

Etc

Which will cost more. Some of us already have enough disability admin. I don't fancy anymore

twocrumpets · 15/10/2026 17:45

Octavia64 · 15/10/2026 17:39

lol.

just… lol.

wheelchairs don’t count as medical care.

wetrooms that are wheelchair accessible don’t count as medical care

hospital beds at home don’t count as medical care.

these days virtually nothing counts as medical care.

every disabled person I know is getting physio privately or not at all because nhs provide 4 hours.

They do though. If you’re unable to walk a wheelchair is provided in loan from the PCT. As is a hospital bed of you qualify, and I mean qualify not ‘want one to look like your disabilities are more severe so you can tell PIP assessors you need equipment’.

UnbeatenMum · 15/10/2026 17:45

OldTiredMum1976 · 15/10/2026 15:16

Well I’m one of them. My DH earns well, I can only work part time due to my disability but we can afford to have our 2 autistic children in private school as they couldn’t cope in mainstream. However, disability or not, I would still only work part time as I like to be able to attend all the children’s sports events etc.

I had never claimed at all but when the 20% VAT came in I was so pissed off that we were being asked to pay even more just because our school system is so crap for SEND children that I claimed for everything! I claim PIP for me and DLA for the 2 children. We are now over £1000 better off each month. If Labour are going to screw over those that try to do the right thing then I’m going to jump right on that benefits bandwagon. And we can now afford a luxury holiday every year…gives me great pleasure and a huge screw you to Labour.

I get this because the VAT annoyed me too for children with SEN. In fact we applied for DD's EHCP not long afterwards. But if you qualified for the daily living element of PIP you need help with some or all of the following:

Preparing food
Taking nutrition
Managing therapy or monitoring a health condition
Washing and bathing
Managing toilet needs or incontinence
Dressing and undressing
Communicating verbally
Reading and understanding signs, symbols and words
Engaging with other people face-to-face
Making budgeting decisions

And if just the mobility element you have difficulties with either or both of:

Planning and following journeys
Moving around

It's hard to imagine there are literally zero costs to you or your family.

A lot of these fictional people seemed to exist. A lot of people who don't exist seem to have been able to respond to the Resolution Foundations Survey.

For him and many others it’s reality not fiction. There’s a safety net for people who need it and so there should be. Wouldn’t it be great if more people who actually needed it would benefit.

That is you, most disabled people have enough to cope with, without adding on the burden of keeping receipts, and having more admin, will just add to the day to day stress of their lives.

I doubt the people I use would be happy to be paid in vouchers. I mean if your employer just paid you in vouchers you'd probably have 1 or 2 things to say about it, no?

Which will cost how much? Then you do it for all other benefits. How would I then pay my parents for all the help they give me because of my disabilities?

What’s the alternative? I’m convinced the future will be HMOs teeming with anxious NEETs while the tiny pool of functioning taxpayers tries to cling on to the edge of the abyss.

Pip claimants are at all ages. Under 16s don’t get pip they get DLA.

17% of pip claimants are over pension age. There’s then a big lump of early sixties and fifties.

there are now slightly more 16-25 people claiming pip than the government expected. That’s it.

in all honestly pip in itself is not a lot of the government budget and if they cut it completely it wouldn’t make much difference financially.

we do have a lot of young people not in work, this has very little to do with pip and everything to do with there being very few jobs around.

give it a couple of years, the economy will pick back up and no-one will remember this panic because they are too busy with the next panic - maybe sourdough rots your brains or something.

seriously, in the 90s Britain was going to fall apart due to single mothers. It hasn’t fallen apart and we now have more single mothers than ever before,

it’s just another moral panic.

correct

yet the plural of "conveniently generic SWIM anecdata" will never amount to fact

its so predictably formulaic and weak sauce
