and the reason there is no cash is because

Bozo, Sunak and the other shiny-suited spivs rinsed the country for 14 years and ran off in 2024, leaving an empty safe and a infinitesimal IOU to the present day and long into the foreseeable

The Tories are gone.
Labour are in charge.
They wanted to be in government and now they are.
They had 14 years to prepare for this, so there's no point in bleating about it now and trying to blame the world and his dog.
Surely they were following what was going on and made a plan?
Apparently not.🙄

Because that’s ’degrading’
Because ‘why should I have to account for my spending’

Etc

Because, unfortunately, some of the money isn’t spent on what it’s intended for?

How could they plan for wars?

They do though. If you’re unable to walk a wheelchair is provided in loan from the PCT. As is a hospital bed of you qualify, and I mean qualify not ‘want one to look like your disabilities are more severe so you can tell PIP assessors you need equipment’.

I was unable to walk after my accident and no wheelchair was provided for me.

happy to give details of dates and times.

it took me about a year and quite a lot of (private) physio before I could do even one step.

i’m 14 years on now and can do more than one step.

i attend many disability support groups and it is common for people to have wheelchairs on lease from motability.

Strawberrydelight78 · 15/10/2026 17:52

I would really struggle to support my dd without her PIP and mobility money. Put it this way she has to have 2 carers for a few hours respite a couple of times a week. Not because of behaviour might I add. It’s down to her complex health needs. Her needs change week to week.

They don’t usually allow you home from hospital unless you can walk to the loo and back. Why did you get discharged unable to walk? Was care provided when you got home?

Usernamen · 15/10/2026 17:53

Submitting receipts idea is bonkers and would never work.

Vouchers is much more sensible. Perhaps that’s already being discussed as part of the reforms?

They may not have ongoing incremental costs to the degree of their PIP payments, but there will be a lot of upfront costs like the cost of a wheelchair, a stair lift, remodelling their house to accommodate their disability etc.

Edited

Most people will already get mobility aids free through NHS. It's the most profoundly disabled who pay for a better one than the NHS provides.
There are also grants for stair lifts and shower rooms, although they are means tested and can take a long time to be approved.
OT equipment is provided free of charge.

Because, unfortunately, some of the money isn’t spent on what it’s intended for?

My seriously disabled friend who receives a care package from the council has 6 hours of PA time to do all the paperwork relating to her disability - receipts for money spent on carers, hours of care provided detailed etc.

the government can ask for this to be provided but almost by definition they are asking for it from people with significant disabilities. In general where this is done (for care packages etc) time needs to be allocated for a carer to do this within the care package.

one of the criteria for pip is cannot understand money. If someone has pip on those grounds, their money is probably going to an appointee, and if the givernmrny want to know what it is spent on they’ll need to budget for PA time to do it.

Constantrunner · 15/10/2026 17:55

@Octavia64 I have an NHS wheelchair, and walker and sticks and don't qualify for pip. They assess your walking. It was a simple process and easy to get.

I do not know why I was discharged unable to walk.

no care package was provided.

roaringdragon · 15/10/2026 15:28

I’m not convinced that can reliably happen given the differences within the disabled population who claim PIP.

I suspect that this is why the rather idealistic suggestion of a support system based on additional elements that aren’t just money that the report suggests won’t work.

looks lovely on paper but but in order to work would need to be the sort of bespoke service that cost £££££. Once that sort of thing comes into contact with government, especially any government who wants to cut back services to the most vulnerable while lining their own pockets it will be use less and only serve people who fit in neat boxes.

Constantrunner · 15/10/2026 17:57

@Octavia64 it does not say can't understand money. It says can't manage money. Very different and for many people simply means a partner or parent ensuring bills are paid.

RetiredFromExplaining · 15/10/2026 17:57

It is frustrating if claimants have to list their extra costs. My DSD33 lives with us. We pay the bills, we buy her shopping, we cook her food, we drive her to appointments etc, we pay for a cleaner because she can't clean.

I worry that the DWP will say that therefore she doesn't have extra costs because we pay. So once again it becomes a reason to reduce the benefits bill because an adult child lives with parents. She currently claims UC but if we charged her rent, she couldn't claim housing benefit because she lives with us, yet we need a bigger house because she lives with us.

If we kicked her out, she would incur much greater costs. She would need someone to help her have a cooked meal, someone to clean, she would have to pay rent. All of that would fall on the state. It is worrying enough that we don't know how she will manage once we have died, without adding that she might then have to work out her additional costs to claim PIP because it was denied when she was living with her parents.

And if you asked her what her additional costs are, she would probably say nothing. We have explained that once she has PIP she can use the money to get taxis - she gets lost a lot and this would help - but these reports only contribute to the benefits-bashing of disabled people.

Usernamen · 15/10/2026 17:57

Huh?

In what way are vouchers “degrading”?

Redsofacushionsandsnacks · 15/10/2026 17:57

Happyjoe · 15/10/2026 17:49

How could they plan for wars?

Quite. But in the same vein, how could the conservatives plan for Covid?
And in terms of people talking about the benefit they receive? It does happen. A few weeks back I went to a new place for a pedicure.
Lovely girl, but she spent most of the hour and a half telling me about her boyfriend. He, apparently, is a plumber, doing well. But he has also recently been awarded PIP and used it for his new car! She thought it was marvellous, couldn’t wait to tell me about it and the “free money”. Obviously I don’t know the ins and outs, he may very well have extra costs, and obviously it might not be true. But, people absolutely do talk about these things and some people will believe it……

It's not just extra costs it's the limited earning potential a disability can cause.

I hope my autistic teenager does manage to get a job in the future but it's unlikely to be full time or highly paid.

She takes a number of medications thst will need to be paid for, transport to appointments, higher electricity bills as always either too hot or too cold and a fan or heater running 24/7. Lights always on even all night as fear of the dark, sensory issues require specific clothing, dietary issues need specific, more expensive foods, lost items, private therapy as needed (£100+ for 50 minutes I kid you not!) etc etc. She would say she has no extra costs because this is her normal and we pay.

Edited

Leaving lights and heaters on etc...why should the taxpayer have to fund that?

princessleah1 · 15/10/2026 17:59

I've met ypung people who get PiP for anxiety related needs. They are usually the children of assertive educared parents who haven't bothered to parent properly, ensure school attendance, encourage resilience etc. Then want other people to pick up the tab because their child is too scared to go out in their own/ has had unlimited internet access for years which has effed their development. Thats probably mean of me but its what I've seen.

TheFairyCaravan · 15/10/2026 18:00

RaggedRocks · 15/10/2026 17:42

Why not give vouchers that can be used to pay for the extra things disabled people need instead of money?

Why not give everyone who is on benefits vouchers then? I don’t see why I should be dehumanised but someone on UC shouldn’t be.
