PREMIUM BONDS AUGUST 2024

1000 replies

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2024 19:12

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs (April 2024) since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

The two winners of
the £1million prizes will be contacted by Agent Million (AM) 😂😂 the day before the first working day of the corresponding month.

There may however be
exceptions to this, such as when the first working day of the month is a
bank holiday, for example.

So

Day before first working day - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Day after first working day , including weekends - cream app showing all winnings

You can also check to see if have won via this link with your holders number

www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

Best ever haul this month - £350 over 6 prizes on full holdings. Very pleased with that Grin

DelilahJane · 03/07/2024 23:55

£100 for us this month. £1500 in the account

EekGoesTheBaby · 04/07/2024 01:04

Thanks for the new thread, Blondes. Fingers crossed for everyone else for next month.

elkiedee · 04/07/2024 01:48

Nothing for me, again, but I only have a small amount of money in compared to most people here (£225 in this month's draw, £25 in dp's account, and our 4th month - I bought a bit more at the end of June, and I'm keeping most of my savings in cash ISAs and other savings accounts. Statistically I don't expect to win anything really.

fellflatonmeface · 04/07/2024 08:18

Thanks Blondes.
£100 here on FH

Musiclover234 · 04/07/2024 08:18

Thanks for new thread and all your efforts @Blondeshavemorefun

So after another no win on my £4.2k ( last win Feb) my partner on FH won £250. He is on a great running streak winning every month for a few now and nothing less than £100. Think £250 was his highest.

Great post! It was our first month this month as I recently invested £50k for my son and £10k for myself. I eagerly checked the prize page....and nothing 🤣

I honestly thought with £50k my son at least would get a small amount each month.

i’ve seen people who have only invested for a month or two win quite big prizes on the big prize list. . It really is the luck of the draw isn’t it!

Spacecrispsnack · 04/07/2024 08:21

Thanks for the new thread!

familyissues12345 · 04/07/2024 08:23

£50 for me and £25 for DH. I have full holdings and he has half.

A bit disappointing for me, I usually get in the hundreds!

Yes we did it because my father in law asked me to invest for my son after my mother in law passed away and left him some money. He said it was definitely as good as a high interest account and that he won money every month, so I was a bit deflated 🤣

If this continues for a few months I'll have to switch as will be losing money for my son.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 04/07/2024 09:03

We have 90k in premium bonds. One of us usually wins something each month but it’s never been a huge amount and there’s been plenty of times where one of us wins nothing for months.

I think the most I’ve won is £350.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/07/2024 10:17

It really is luck of the draw

Yes with £50k should win every month and a couple of prizes

But many don't

Myself and a few other with low /under 5 figures do win

It’s a bit more than luck, let’s face it. As someone else memorably said a while ago - I think - @OneFrenchEgg - PB’s are a bit pointless unless you have FH. Worth a punt even if you have a small holding like I do, but a bit futile.

Yes I decided to stop looking at the list as it's always a majority (obviously) of FH. The sensible thing would be to max out everything else and then do PB but I'll never have that kind of cash.

I would disagree with that

I have nowhere near fh. Never will tbh unless win £50k on pb

Or heart splash the cash 😂😂

A lady won £60k yesterday. Mini blondes and I were in the car and omg when she answered she cheered bless her

Anyway I regress

This year I have won

£1450

Jan 50
Feb 25
March 225
April 550
May 200
June 0
July 400

But seem very lucky. When I had £25/30k in there many years ago after life insurance /major savings I won maybe 3 times a year

Now with a lot less I have been winning most months and 2 big ones

Now I want to win £1000 😂😂

Seems almost too good to be true !!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/07/2024 11:54

But I have been dipping into it and drained it 8yrs ago for ivf and mini blondes was created 💕

But I've said before my reinvesting seems to be winning more then my old ones that are years old

OP posts:
InMySpareTime · 04/07/2024 11:59

A few years ago the prizes were much lower and the odds much worse than they are now, so it's difficult to draw comparisons from the recent past.

Phase2 · 04/07/2024 15:37

Bloody hell @Blondeshavemorefun do you have like over £30k? I've heard that's the best amount to have somewhere.

Retirednearthesea · 04/07/2024 16:31

£75 this month - only had investments since Feb 24 draw - nowhere near full holding but won £1450 since Feb. Good returns so far for me ......

Bimblesalong · 04/07/2024 16:36

Thanks for the thread. I got into the NS&I bonds last year when they went to 6.2%. They mature in Sept so I may top up the premium bonds after I sort this years isa.

No. I used to. Before drained it 8/9yrs ago for ivf and extension

Just over £3 at the moment.

@Blondeshavemorefun well that's amazing. Well done Star

Ihaveahamster · 04/07/2024 20:41

Something I don’t understand, on the prize winners list you rarely see a very small amount in the column that shows the value of the bond.
Surely if a bond wins that was bought from a £25 win then you’d see just £25. Considering how many people reinvest and the smallest amount you win is £25 you’d think there would be loads!

InMySpareTime · 04/07/2024 20:45

The small bond amounts have usually been held for many years, before the minimum spend came in. Generally bought as christening/birthday presents for babies that are now adults.
