PREMIUM BONDS AUGUST 2024

1000 replies

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2024 19:12

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs (April 2024) since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

The two winners of
the £1million prizes will be contacted by Agent Million (AM) 😂😂 the day before the first working day of the corresponding month.

There may however be
exceptions to this, such as when the first working day of the month is a
bank holiday, for example.

So

Day before first working day - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Day after first working day , including weekends - cream app showing all winnings

You can also check to see if have won via this link with your holders number

www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

£75 on FH. I'm quite a bit below a decent interest saver but I do like the excitement of checking each month!

£50 on more than full holding between me and DH.

Not great. Keep thinking about moving it to an ISA. But the hope of a big win keeps me going!

Hotpinkparade · 03/09/2024 00:16

Just checked and I won £1675!! Across five bonds, on about £38k holdings. I did check the big winners list earlier but didn’t see myself. Really chuffed, my first ever ‘big’ win!

Oh wow. Well done @Hotpinkparade

Fancy you missing you being on the list

My Dad got a whopping £25 I’ll have to add up what he’s won since passing away!

I must admit I’ve enjoyed checking his app every month so I’ve topped up my account to just under FH and will finish it once NS and I transfer his balance!

Im a little bit sad I won’t be checking his bonds anymore but maybe he’ll be out there somewhere sending winning vibes for an AM Visit one day!!

Awww you have had a lovely year of what's ifs with your dad looking down on you

Do you have to keep them for a year then Transfer

Or did it as then have more than £50k in yours so double the chance of winning

DH didn't win anything this month.

I won £800 (£100 x 3 and a whopping £500) which goes into DHs account, so he did win lol

Ha ha

Dh did well out of you 😂

First month on FH, £25. DH left for work so can't check his.

But.... checked DP, first month on FH and has won £5225! So excited for him, need to wait to call him. I have POA I manage his money, he spends it!!

How lovely for your dad

I did get confused thinking husband and partner 😂

Then realised meant parent

Think he's the highest winner this month

£5000 in PB. Nothing this month. But £400 return this year so I’m doing pretty well.

My mother has £50K and has taken home £75 this year 😂

@Killingoffmyflowersonebyone that's really low for your mum

She should by odds win once /twice a month every month with FH

she obv has very poor luck v some who have very good luck

OP posts:
Spaceracers · 03/09/2024 10:21

£150 on FH - as a pp said, I'm not unhappy! Three more draws before the year is out.

No you can keep them for -2 months of draws and dad was adamant he wanted us to leave them in! So we did but could of withdrawn them at anytime!

Quick tot up and he’s won £2625 so it his most bumper year but it’ll make him smile as he so loved the PBs!

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/09/2024 10:31

That's so nice @JollyHostess101 buy something nice with his winnings as maybe a memory of him

With today's winnings I have worked out that our rolling average is 4.9%

Happy with that (but DH did better than me this month, must improve!)

westisbest1982 · 03/09/2024 10:55

minny80 · 03/09/2024 08:22

just £25 on full holdings this month 😬
I guess winnings will reduce now that the interest rate is going down. I have won £1675 in the last 12 months, equivalent to 3.73% interest rate

Yes, that possibility is something I too am thinking about. There’s a good chance I could get to FH next year, but with my shit luck on the PB’s and a possible imminent cut in the prize rate, I think that money could be put to better use elsewhere. Oh well, I guess it’s a nice ‘problem’ to have!

Thanks to the OP and pps these threads have been so helpful, interesting and are often good fun. It's great to read of the good fortune of pps and to know that winning is possible, but I'm not sure my psyche can deal with the disappointment nearly every month of my own lack of good luck! At first I enjoyed the excitement of hope and possibility but, after only one small win in 6 months, I'm not enjoying the ride as much as I hoped and I want to get off!

Maybe the thing to do in future is to just ignore as best I can the fact that I've got PBs and there's a monthly draw, and then if an email turns up then that's a nice surprise and a bonus. How do others who have been similarly unlucky cope with PB disappointment? Does it make a difference if, like me, there is a 'need' to win for something very important or if it's purely for a financial investment, a 'that would be nice' or a 'want' like, for example, a luxury holiday, car or kitchen? I'd be interested to hear how others see it.

Snowpaw · 03/09/2024 11:55

£25 on £23k, bit shit. Going to put it towards a meal out at the weekend.

I don't think you can have it for needs as that's going to lead to disappointment Grin
I am saving mine in my disneyworld category in YNAB, it will need topping up before 2027 as I only have £525 in there from the past 13 months but I treat it as bonus money

CaveMum · 03/09/2024 12:29

I think PBs are best used as a saving vehicle alongside others like ISAs and high interest accounts. To beat the best ISA rates you need to be getting a return of 6-7% from PBs and very few people seem to achieve this. I know it's the "what if" factor that keeps people sticking with their PBs but if you don't have other savings running alongside it's not really the best way to save.

VanGoghsDog · 03/09/2024 12:35

Oh, can you link me to an ISA that pay 6-7% please? The best I have is 5.5% (this year's allowance is used so PBs are good for the tax free status).

I did well this month, 4 prizes - 25, 50, 50 and £1k! Must have been on the list, I did scan it but I was on the phone so it was hard to see, plus I get a bit bored by the time we get down to the one thousands.

I'll be over my full holding now so they will pay some into my bank account.

Sorry I got myself in a muddle, of course PB winnings are tax free so they don't need to be returning at a higher rate than ISAs. That said, very few people get c5% return on PBs so their money would still be better off in an ISA if the annual allowance has not been maxed out.

westisbest1982 · 03/09/2024 12:48

Having a savings account with a decent amount of guaranteed interest helps me cope with my disappointment with the PB's (Chip - mentioned twice already - other savings accounts are available). The 'what if' factor, even on a paltry £6K, keeps me hooked, but I know I'm extremely unlikely to win big with that amount. I would love to be in a position where I would have a diversified portfolio of investments and savings accounts (including PB's) that total a chunky six-figure pot in which case PB's would only mean to me being a combo of being a tax-efficient and fun thing to do, but I suspect that will only ever be a dream.

RoseBliss · 03/09/2024 12:55

Grrr…. Another rubbish month!! £100 for me on FH and second month of a big fat £0 for DH on FH. Still dreaming of a big win!

Grinchinlaws · 03/09/2024 13:14

I’ve got £10.5k and won nothing again this month - the last time I won was April!

My returns have averaged at 1.5% which is well below average…hopefully means I’m due a big win at some point to even it out 🤣
