PREMIUM BONDS AUGUST 2024

1000 replies

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2024 19:12

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs (April 2024) since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

The two winners of
the £1million prizes will be contacted by Agent Million (AM) 😂😂 the day before the first working day of the corresponding month.

There may however be
exceptions to this, such as when the first working day of the month is a
bank holiday, for example.

So

Day before first working day - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Day after first working day , including weekends - cream app showing all winnings

You can also check to see if have won via this link with your holders number

www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

PS my regular savings are into my stocks and shares ISA. My “emergency access” savings are split between PBs and a cash account so tbh I can’t complain really.

DaydreamerBetty · 03/09/2024 13:35

£100 for me on just under 16k so pleased with that after my good win last month.

£950 won since January.

ScoobyDoesnt · 03/09/2024 13:47

Yay, £100 for me on a holding of £1,000. Second £100 this year, only bought the bonds in the last 12 months or so.

Eaumyword · 03/09/2024 13:55

Thanks for the new thread @Blondeshavemorefun
We got £225 across 2.5 FH which is better than last month's terrible showing! I still live in hope for a large win sometime.

OublietteBravo · 03/09/2024 13:55

Nothing this month on ~£18500. Second consecutive month.

LuckbeaLady2 · 03/09/2024 14:05

Zilch here

IsItTimeToRetireYet · 03/09/2024 14:06

Joining the chat and am on a losing streak! 3 months of nothing on just over £20k holding.

I was so sure Sept would bring a change in fortune so I set myself up for disappointment!

littlelandlord7 · 03/09/2024 14:38

£125 on 25k

Thanks to the OP and pps these threads have been so helpful, interesting and are often good fun. It's great to read of the good fortune of pps and to know that winning is possible, but I'm not sure my psyche can deal with the disappointment nearly every month of my own lack of good luck! At first I enjoyed the excitement of hope and possibility but, after only one small win in 6 months, I'm not enjoying the ride as much as I hoped and I want to get off!

Maybe the thing to do in future is to just ignore as best I can the fact that I've got PBs and there's a monthly draw, and then if an email turns up then that's a nice surprise and a bonus. How do others who have been similarly unlucky cope with PB disappointment? Does it make a difference if, like me, there is a 'need' to win for something very important or if it's purely for a financial investment, a 'that would be nice' or a 'want' like, for example, a luxury holiday, car or kitchen? I'd be interested to hear how others see it.

I see it as bonus free money if I win. I couldn't start looking at percentage return etc for interest rate so I'm just leaving mine in as security. I've recently divorced and until I can find a job the only money I have is what is in my bank account. Much to my ex h annoyance I kept forgetting about the PB and didn't see it as money so it is my backup.

lemonyellows · 03/09/2024 18:20

Nothing for 3rd month on half holdings. Pretty shabby 😱

JollyHostess101 · 04/09/2024 00:14

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/09/2024 10:06

Awww you have had a lovely year of what's ifs with your dad looking down on you

Do you have to keep them for a year then Transfer

Or did it as then have more than £50k in yours so double the chance of winning

@Blondeshavemorefun i only had a tiny amount but once we’d sorted Dads will I topped mine up with what else he left me and now NS and I have transferred his balance (super quick but they’ve been super efficient all the way through) I’ll take mine up to FH!

I did actually use some of his winnings to get a new ring made with both his and my mums ashes in!!

Trumpton · 04/09/2024 03:09

Cream App will not open beyond “reveal results”. I have deleted and reinstalled but still won’t let me in. But I checked on website and £300 and £75 on 2X full holdings. We are doing ok this year.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/09/2024 04:58

That's lovely @JollyHostess101 a forever memory and can wear every day 💕

CheeseNcrackerz · 04/09/2024 22:40

Well that's £200 for me this month taking my total winnings this year to about £12750 I think. That's on a full allowance. A great result but I can't help but feel that now that I've had my windfall (£10k last month) perhaps it's time to give up pb... don't think the odds are in my favour for it to happen twice! I do love the excitement of it every month though

Linearforeignbody · 04/09/2024 22:44

£50 for me this month.

blitzen · 05/09/2024 08:05

£100 for me on around £27k

SB1971 · 05/09/2024 10:06

How did you get on @Blondeshavemorefun this month or I missed this?

leafybrew · 05/09/2024 14:23

@lemonyellows - ouch - unlucky to have 3 months in a row.

I also had nothing, but with a much lower amount - still stupidly disappointed though! 😅

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/09/2024 14:27

SB1971 · 05/09/2024 10:06

How did you get on @Blondeshavemorefun this month or I missed this?

£100. 1 x 50. 2x25

Can't complain

I also think I don't have the right personality for PBs. Although I know the chance of a big prize is tiny, every month I find myself getting tense in the run up to the draw. Looking out for missed calls and unfamiliar cars on the agent million day(s).

Lots of you seem to enjoy the excitement, but I just feel tense and on edge.

If I keep them, I really need to try and switch off, and only think about it when I get an email.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2024 23:34

@Hopelesslydevoted2Gu we get excited from middle of the month usually

OP posts:
BuyingButterAndSatinSandals · 10/09/2024 09:43

Glad it's not just me, @Hopelesslydevoted2Gu ! It's not like I'm not used to coping with disappointment in life, 'regrets, I've had a few'! Do you have a lot riding on winning? I wonder if that makes a difference.

Maybe it's true that some people are just luckier with PBs than others? Like @Blondeshavemorefun for example, who has such regular good luck that I'm not sure she isn't an NS&I mole to keep us all investing and hooked! Wink

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/09/2024 12:52

@BuyingButterAndSatinSandals

I do seem to have fault good luck for so little bonds

Admit I would be pissed off if had FH and didn't win for months like many on here do

Oh to dream of £50k !!!
