PREMIUM BONDS AUGUST 2024

1000 replies

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2024 19:12

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff

PB have been about since 1957

Been 30yrs (April 2024) since a million was then the highest prize

nsandi-corporate.com/news-research/news/30-years-premium-bonds-ps1-million-jackpots#

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

This means they will go into the next months draw without losing a month

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to them hoping win thousands to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

We've seen over the years £100 win £100k and £50 win £25k

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1925 in prizes

If have £5k average luck is £175 winnings a year

Obviously some people have better 'luck' than others and some worse - Ie full holdings and not winning anything a month or two

PB odds calculator below

moneymarvel.co.uk/calculators/premium-bonds/

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,925

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 2 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

And to confuse things I have a White app that is a bookmark - which shows info/list 😄😄😄

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out if going to get a visit from AM 😂

The two winners of
the £1million prizes will be contacted by Agent Million (AM) 😂😂 the day before the first working day of the corresponding month.

There may however be
exceptions to this, such as when the first working day of the month is a
bank holiday, for example.

So

Day before first working day - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Day after first working day , including weekends - cream app showing all winnings

You can also check to see if have won via this link with your holders number

www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

Just place marking so I can be disappointed with no prizes again on my 3.8k and moan about it on here on Thursday 😁

Yes I can relate 😆. July was my seventh consecutive month of zero on a £6K holding. I would love to get to FH one day.

25 years or so ago I got 4 numbers and was also very excited… I won £6 /something! If I’d only got 3 numbers I’d have won £10!

Omg!!

I once got five numbers on the lottery when it was still really popular, I think people in those days won about 5 to 10k with five numbers. I was a student at the time, and rang up the telephone number all excited, I won £501 because apparently there were lots of winners and it went straight towards my big student overdraft 🤣

That happened to my friend! The week before her win, 5 numbers got you over 50 grand. She got less than £2k. Gutting!

Sparklfairy · 29/07/2024 12:05

My DM got all 6 numbers on the lottery last week - but 3 numbers on two separate tickets Sad she won £60 and was really happy, but then realised that she'd actually hit all six numbers across both tickets and missed out on 4 million Grin

She now says she was reserving her luck quota for Agent William's visit this week!

Oh wow!!! It's hard isn't it as you're obviously grateful for the win but can't help thinking of what could have been 😂

I actually saw the confusion as her face tried to pull a happy and disappointed face at the same time Grin

I've checked the screenshots, one was numbers she picked (her parents birthdays and the number of the house she grew up in), and the other was a lucky dip. As she always picks birthdays etc she would never have got the lucky dip numbers herself, so she sees it as a £30 'bonus' rather than a £4mill loss! Grin

Just topped up for the September draw. Still dreaming of retiring in August 🤣

Happiestathome · 30/07/2024 00:53

I’m struggling to decide - do I buy more bonds or do I not? I can get 5.2% tax free elsewhere. I’m not even getting the average rate at the minute, so it’s costing a decent amount to play the game each month. I have bonds for the chance of the life changing win, but can’t decide where to set my limit. Currently have just over £35k. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

And me… 4.2k. i won Jan and Feb. Feb was the best win i’ve had with £175 and i feel like i’ve used my luck up for the year now.

ExitPursuedByABare · 30/07/2024 08:55

Can anyone remember what the picture was last month?

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/07/2024 08:59

If you won last month you get a pic

Usually 3/4 diff ones

Boy lady man boat etx

And yes I know you get more in interest in an account but I would want the £50k max first

@Happiestathome could I ask where you can get 5.2% tax free please?

westisbest1982 · 30/07/2024 09:34

@Happiestathome Personally I would give it a year in PB’s with your £35K holding - possibly two - and if the returns are still crap then put £20K in an ISA and leave the rest in PB’s.

Happiestathome · 30/07/2024 10:08

@Happiestathome could I ask where you can get 5.2% tax free please?

Trading 212 and chip are both offering it on their flexible ISA at the moment.

CaveMum · 30/07/2024 12:13

@leafybrew more info on those ISAs paying 5.2% here, thought the Chip offer runs out tomorrow.

Best cash ISAs: up to 5.21% easy access, up to 4.96% fixed - MSE (moneysavingexpert.com)

Just checking my bank account - I set up a standing order for 26th of month to transfer £50 to my prem bond account and it went out and was credited back in to my bank account the same day!! It just says 'reversal of 26/7'.

Have checked all the details (account number, reference etc) and all are fine. I can do this month as a bank transfer but does anyone have any idea why it might have been reversed?!

Have you reached the maximum holdings for the PB? Or maybe you're only allowed to buy so much in a set amount of time.

KohlaParasaurus · 30/07/2024 17:02

Is it time to take the hoover for its monthly walk around the house and make sure there's some decent cake in the tin?

I could do with a big win this month. I told a family member that if the NHS wasn't able to perform a procedure they need within an acceptable timescale I'd pay for them to have private treatment. Then I discovered that my estimated of the actual cost was several years our of date.

Have you put the right number in
It's not the 11 digit nunber

It's the one with the letter at the end

OP posts:
chimichangaz · 30/07/2024 17:53

@BirthdayRainbow @Blondeshavemorefun I only have £600 in there.
My holders number is 11 digits and is the one that it's stated I need to put as a reference.

I'm puzzled by it. I've transferred in separately this month anyway.

Hopefully I'll win £50k and then not being able to top up monthly won't be an issue 😊

BirthdayRainbow · 30/07/2024 17:53

Could you ask the bank what has happened then you won't be wondering? @chimichangaz

hellswelshy · 30/07/2024 18:07

Hi chimichangaz this happened to me too for a few months. I think now I've set it up as a standing order, with a sort code and ac number 08-31-15 and ac number ending in 808? Reference number is a 9 digit number, personal to me I assume. It goes out fine!

Sadtosaythis · 30/07/2024 18:13

I love this thread! A monthly something to look
forward to 🙏

chimichangaz · 30/07/2024 19:05

Yes @hellswelshy that's the one. I've left it set up so we'll see what happens next month 🤷🏻‍♀️
