Not claiming any special knowledge myself (apart from am about to migrate in next couple of months!), but wanted to keep this going - will post link to the original thread next -) as it seemed to be helping and calming so many people.
Thanks for all valuable contributions everyone.

I've posted this as it's own thread but then realised I should just have asked on here instead!

I'm in the process of moving from Tax Credits to Universal Credit. Under TC my child (who gets DLA) also gets a disabled child premium. The UC equivalent "disabled child element" is nearly £200/month less than the TC premium. I am self employed and have declared myself as a carer to UC even though I don't claim CA, to make sure I'm not hit with the MIF so this means I'll be entitled to the Carer Element which didn't exist under TC.

So, I've done a manual calculation which works out as almost exactly the same as I got under TC due to me now being entitled to the Carer Element - but I've read that TP is based on an "indicative amount" made up of equivalent elements paid by TC and that the Carer Element is not taken into account when calculating TP because there isn't an equivalent element on TC. This link seems to say I'll get £177 in TP due to the difference in disabled child element. But will that be wiped out by the fact I'll now get the £198 Carer Element? If not, does that mean I'll actually be better off on UC 🤯

I have no idea how they work it all out but I get CA and my dh is now entitled to the carers element in UC as it doesn't have an income limit like CA so we are better off. Until our TP ends anyway!

Has anyone experienced a basic error in their initial calculation of UC entitlement, and was it resolved easily?

I applied on 7th April and got a notification yesterday to check online to see what my first payment on 13th May will be.

They haven't included my disabled dependant son on my claim even though he was included in my UC application and my previous TC claim. So I am only due to get about a fifth of what I expected.

I put a note on my journal telling them this and got a reply saying it has been escalated to a specialist for verification. Is escalation the usual response?

I am worried as I didn't ask for an advance and if they don't amend my first payment amount I will struggle.

Lougle · 08/05/2024 12:45

Escalation is good. It means someone human will check it. It might take longer than 6 days though. You can still ask for an advance.

It really feels like they are trying to catch us out. Had the identity appointment. Despite bringing more documents with us than they requested, they wouldn't accept most of them as they didn't have our address on them. Only managed to pass the check as I was eventually able to log into HMRC and show the address on there. I've just gone back to the list they requested before the appointment and it does not mention anywhere needing proof of address. 2 acceptable documents should have been birth and marriage certificates, which we had. The lady was very nice about it and polite and she waited patiently while we desperately tried to log in to accounts looking for proof of address, but really they could have told us in advance as it literally doesn't request the address in the list of accepted documents.

That’s odd because my DH had to verify his identity at the job centre too and the list we received on our UC journal was incredibly comprehensive and asked for several forms of id.

Yes, that's the list. We had passport, birth certificate and marriage certificate plus bank card. According to the list that should be fine, but they then also wanted something with address too. Nowhere on that list does it say that.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 08/05/2024 19:22

I took a folder full of stuff…I like to be over prepared 😆

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/05/2024 18:08

I'm confused. I had my self employment meeting today. I was deemed not gainfully self employed, which I'm fine with; I'm disabled, get PIP and also my DD is disabled. I'm therefore considered her carer, so have no work related responsibility. All fine.

I was told to put fit notes in and start the process for LCWRA. Also fine.

In the meantime, I was getting £338 a week on tax credits as it also included the severe disability element. Obviously this doesn't exist on UC. I get that if I'm assessed, I'll get the LCWRA but it's currently saying that I'll get about £168 a week.

I asked about Transitional Protection as the difference is huge. I was told that TP was only for people with savings (I don't have any savings) I also have no housing elements and never have had as I own my home.

Upon googling, it says I should have TP due to the difference in the amount upon migrating.

Can anyone help?

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/05/2024 18:11

One other thing. He said I still have to report my self employed earnings, which is fine. He said if I earned £100 a week, they would take £55 a week off me. This isn't right either is it?

Their own staff don't seem to understand anything tbh. I'd wait for your first statement to come and see what it says, then query it. I got shown the screen by the staff member doing my ID check where it said that TP was awaiting verification by a team called "Move to UC" - she told me that TP is calculated by a specialist team and that work coaches and JobCentre staff don't know much about it so she couldn't advise me!

You lose 55p of Universal credit for each pound you earn but if you have kids on your claim then will have a work allowance which means that a certain amount of your earnings is disregarded before deductions take place.

Thank you. I do earn around £100 a week, so I wish he had said that about having a child and just confirmed my minimum income floor.

Yes, this is exactly what's happened today. He showed me the screen and said "this will change, but it's currently how it's standing"

My assessment period apparently runs from 9th April to 8th May, yet I only got the text asking me to report my earnings while I was in the appt today. I'm supposed to find out officially what I'm getting on the 11th which is Saturday, so I'll go and report my earnings now and see what transpires in the next couple of days.

It wasn't too stressful, but damn, it was confusing.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/05/2024 19:09

Gosh, I'm sorry to be a pest, but where do I report my income and expenses? There's no appropriate tab.

Am I just supposed to add a note in my journal? Everything online just says report it via my online account.

trickortrickier · 09/05/2024 19:31

where do I report my income and expenses?

Go to your Home Page, select the To Do tab and the To Do will say 'Report your Income and Expenses'. Just complete all fields even if 0.00 and submit.

Thanks. I was looking for a tab among 'payments' and 'advances' etc. I didn't realise that if I scrolled to the bottom of the to do list message, it was there.

Just thought I would update in case it is helpful or reassuring to anyone else.

Yesterday I got a notification to check my journal and UC have already corrected my claim and will pay me the correct amount on 13th May.

Hi, I’m due to migrate, if there is a TC underpayment following the in-year finalisation process does anyone know if that will be paid by TC and how quickly? Or will it be added to the UC process? Thanks

Paid by tax credits and won't count as income only capital for UC purposes. It will be paid once you annual "renewal" is completed.

JanglyBeads · 11/05/2024 11:11

Can I just ask, is there any justification for the income threshold for FSM eligibility when receiving UC being half that when receiving CTCs?

You are actually far more likely to qualify for FSM under tax credits as even 1p of WTC makes you not eligible. So the income difference is a bit of a red herring. There is also transitional protection for FSM.

JanglyBeads · 11/05/2024 12:55

True. But I just couldn't fathom why it was defined like that.

Just wondering about others experiences with transferring from tc to uc. Applied for uc ages ago had a note saying my statement would be available on 11th May and any money would be paid on 15th May. I have checked loads today and it still says to check back on 11th May for statement!

On top of that we had a letter from tc today saying we had been overpaid by £600! Nothing has changed since last April, they have all our information so how have we been overpaid?

Fed up with it all, been ages since we had any money and we are trying to cope on just our wages. Dp is full time, I am part time but interviewing for full time, we can just about cover our bills.

Is there anything on your to do list that could be blocking payment/ statement ?
No statement means no payment so if it's not there by monday I would call them asap.

IndeedDanielJackson · 11/05/2024 19:10

@Babyroobs thank you for the reply. Just had a look and yes dp had a todo to read about sanctions! Didn't clock it as it wasn't actually asking anything and was just info. He's done it now so 🤞
