Is there a new thread yet? I can't find one?

Hi! Another one still on DA. It's been very good for a while now with some fun projects. I also occasionally do Prolific - I've had some higher-paying tasks on there occasionally, but when DA is busy, I don't often check Prolific.

ZetaPuppis · 21/08/2025 11:56

I recently got kicked off Telus. I’d been on there since the pandemic and it was great then. Gave me something to do but I’d slowed right down on it recently as my real life work started picking up.
It was a good bit of work.

ilikeeggs · 21/08/2025 12:04

I’m only doing Prolific these days, sadly I never found anything to replace Crisp.

Redcrayons · 21/08/2025 14:40

Just prolific for me. Can usually manage about £30 a month. Would probably get a bit more if I was in front of my laptop all day.

I tried DA, but never heard back after doing the assessment. I might give it another go.

ZetaPuppis · 21/08/2025 20:04

@Redcrayonslet me know if you get anywhere. As far as I know, they don’t let you apply again. I tried because the thing crashed in the middle of my assessment. I was gutted but couldn’t redo.

Hi all, would like to try and do some work on Data Analyst but how do I actually find it? When I google that I don’t see an actual company of that name. Thanks!

ClaudiaDark · 25/08/2025 13:10

Try Data Annotation.

Do you need a degree to work for Data Annotation?

ClaudiaDark · 27/08/2025 20:36

I can't remember. But you do need to go through some online tests (called qualifications) to pass their screening at first to join. But if you pass, the tasks are really interesting. For example, rating which AI model has given the best response to a prompt. It pays well - between $20 to $30 and hour depending on the tasks - though bear in mind it's in dollars and will convert to a lesser amount in sterling when you withdraw to your PayPal account. You need to be observant, thorough with your ratings and rationale, and have decent writing skills for tasks where you need to explain why you've scored the response in a certain way. There are also tasks that involve creating audio and video prompts. Definitely give it a go. Good luck!

justalittlebitextra · 28/08/2025 16:07

I've been mainly working on Prolific, but it's dried up now and I haven't had any work on Appen/ Crowdgen for months now.

I've just done the DA qualifications, but I'm not holding out a huge amount of hope as I couldn't load the instructions and just got an error message so I expect I missed some of the nuances. I've done very similar work on both Prolific and Appen, so I don't think I did an awful job, but it was quite hard doing it blind (there was a section for optional comments so I did say that I didn't have access to the guidelines).

ruralwanderer · 29/08/2025 07:22

Prolific usually picks up again in September when the universities start back again.

justalittlebitextra · 01/09/2025 18:38

Blimey - I got into DA! Any tips on strategy or is it a case of qualify for as many projects as possible and hope for the best! Just wondering when work tends to drop, is it fairly evenly throughout the day, or does it follow US hours more?

ClaudiaDark · 01/09/2025 21:42

Qualify for the ones you think you're a good fit for. Don't try ones about STEM or coding unless you have those skills. Achilles is a good project. I like the Rate and Review ones too because I'm reviewing someone else's submissions and judging if I think they've scored the AI responses appropriately.

Don't worry about skipping a task if it looks too hard, they don't penalise you. At the bottom of each task is a chat section where you can message other workers and admins if you have a question about a project.

I always make a note of the project name and ID that I'm working on, so that I know which ones to report time for. I use Google timer (stopwatch) when I'm on a task and pause it if I need a break. You must be honest about how long a task has taken you. Make sure you rate tasks thoroughly and give a proper rationale for your scores. Explain why you thought an AI model did well or why you thought it did poorly.

Most tasks are text based but sometimes projects come up where you can submit audio or video prompts.

Sometimes you can submit a task and then it takes you back to the homepage as there aren't any tasks left for you. When that happens, refresh the page to see what projects come up.

ClaudiaDark · 01/09/2025 21:48

I'm not 100% sure about peak times but they do have a mix of US and UK workers. Start with a Rate and Review project if they're offered to you, as you'll get a feel for how other workers submit tasks. Great way of seeing the difference between a task that has been rated thoroughly where the previous worker has done a proper job scoring the AI models against the axes, and one that's clearly be done half arsed - I learnt a lot from the R&R projects.

justalittlebitextra · 02/09/2025 08:57

@ClaudiaDark thank you, that's really helpful.

I did the assessment yesterday but didnt hear anymore. Did I fail?!

ConnieClue · 02/09/2025 14:30

Really great info @ClaudiaDark - thank you for taking the type to write that out.

I actually found and have applied for data annotation via LinkedIn! Found the assessment quite tricky so not expecting to get through, but one can hope. 😅 I did it last week (either Thursday or friday) and it still says check back for when they've reviewed, so I have a feeling it takes a while @AdaShelby

That’s good. I’m sure last year people said that they knew really quickly

I possibly should make a separate thread for this but...For those working for Telus (but the question probably applies to DA and similar) have you registered as self employed or do you just declare your earnings though Self Assessment?

I'm being told on another forum that I am self employed and must register as self employed but I had intended to just declare my earnings via self assessment. I've always previously declared untaxed earnings from surveys etc. via self assessment but the last tax year was my first one working for Telus. There's an online HMRC test to determine whether you're self employed or employed which I did a few months ago and it said I was employed but I'm now a bit worried I've done something wrong (although I think I have until January 26 to declare).

justalittlebitextra · 02/09/2025 16:28

@AdaShelby @ConnieClue I got an instant approval for the Starter Assessment, but it took 4 days to hear anything about the Core Test.

This was a few years ago but I registered as self-employed. I still do the self assessment and it just asks the normal questions about my income etc., but when I log into my tax account it does say business account there somewhere. I think. I haven't logged on for a while because it's a nightmare to use. Haha. I need to do my self assessment too but have been putting it off because I've been an idiot and haven't properly recorded my income so I need to go through all of the payments I've received and then declare them, so it will take some time. I was so good when I first started, I had a spreadsheet and everything but then when the work was more sporadic I kind of got lazy. But I only have to do it once a year so at least there's that.

ArtTheClown · 03/09/2025 08:14

@arejcenencehche3uh9f3 withTelus you are definitely a self employed contractor. The HMRC tool isn't very accurate in that scenario imo.

arejcenencehche3uh9f3 · 03/09/2025 09:11

Thank you @YonderTweek and @ArtTheClown I contacted HMRC and they told me to register as self employed (sole trader). Can either of you remember, when you declare your self employed income via Self Assessment does that calculate the NI due as well as the tax? The advisor told me that no NI or tax will be due (only made a few k in that tax year) so I assume when I do the SA I will just see zero for both? The advisor said something about registering for class 2 NICs but I think she meant that in registering as self employed I would automatically be registered for class 2 rather than me actually having to do anything additional.

YonderTweek · 03/09/2025 10:24

Yeah I'm registered as a sole trader too. I think from memory the self assessment calculates NI but my payments have always been voluntary, maybe because my earnings are under the threshold? The class 2 NI rings a bell so maybe that's the same thing? I seem to remember there being a suggested NI payment at the end of the assessment and that I have paid it with a card.

Sorry I'm not more helpful. I haven't done mine for this year yet so I can't remember. I'll do mine soon so I can come and update. I think when you do your self assessment it should give you all the NI info etc. but it's not always very clear. 🙈
