Universal credit managed migration thread

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

Yes, I am. I'm in London but no letter yet.

EmeraldFox · 28/06/2023 14:54

I have to apply by mid August. Not looking forward to dealing with UC with regards to my pension contributions that are deducted from net pay. It's been bad enough with TC but it looks like I will have to request that they are taken off every month?

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 15:17

I don't know how it works with pension payments. That seems very annoying if you have to report them every month. I will need to do that as well then.

Are you going to wait until the end of August to apply @EmeraldFox
@Symposium have you done your renewal? I uploaded my renewal last Thursday, am assuming they will finalise renewals before asking people to transfer now.

EmeraldFox · 28/06/2023 15:25

I have to by mid August so I will after an expected bonus at the end of July.

Symposium · 28/06/2023 15:55

Yes @ChristmasCatBells I did my renewal. I never have any changes so it's just an automatic renewal .

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 18:04

Are you expecting your awards on UC to be lower than on TCS?
I'm not eligible for UC but I think with the capital disregard I should get a year of protection before its removed.

I had my migration letter last week and have until 20th September to apply for universal credit. Planning on leaving it until end of August.

EmeraldFox · 28/06/2023 18:19

I'm delaying so the year of protection should take me through until DS finishes year 13. Does anyone know if you get UC until 31 August or does it end earlier?

Symposium · 28/06/2023 18:27

My award would be around the same as tax credits, except we have savings which means we don't actually qualify for anything. I'm hoping that the transitional arrangement means we get 12 months protected. But as I haven't yet seen the letter I really don't know how that works.

spacechimp79 · 28/06/2023 18:43

@Symposium the letter is actually very basic and doesn't go into the details of transitional protection at all. Just mentions it. I was expecting more info if I'm honest.

spacechimp79 · 28/06/2023 18:43

@EmeraldFox yes until the end of August, same as child benefit.

EmeraldFox · 28/06/2023 19:11

@EmeraldFox yes until the end of August, same as child benefit.

That's good, and the transitional protection will take me through until almost then.

Jagley · 28/06/2023 19:16

I'm waiting, I get income support and carers as well though. I wish they'd give a timetable out so we knew when to expect it!

Symposium · 28/06/2023 19:22

@spacechimp79 that seems strange that they don't explain it more fully in the letter! So you just have to apply and see what happens? I wonder how they track who is entitled to the transitional arrangements?

spacechimp79 · 28/06/2023 19:26

@Symposium I will find the letter later and post exactly what is says but I was surprised at how brief it was.

jamrolls · 28/06/2023 19:47

I'm in London and on tax credits only (and PIP but that's not affected). Expecting a letter soon but not heard anything yet. My savings will mean I don't qualify for UC and I don't know if I want the intrusion of declaring them even for a year of transitional protection. It will be interesting to hear what other peoples experience is.

I have a friend in exactly the same position as you, @jamrolls. I know her through a support group for patients with a particular disease who are (medical term) fucked.

She asked me what I think. I can’t answer. I really don’t know how much stress it will be for her, being on UC on transitional protection and PIP. Will she have to keep a daily journal? Do another health assessment? For someone who is very, very unwell, and has a weak immune system, it’s a grave worry.

tweener · 28/06/2023 20:11

I don't know if this is still a problem as it's been a long time since I worked in payroll, however the advice back then was to not apply around your usual pay dates. This was because your pay periods for UC once set up are unable to be changed and in months where pay day fell on/around a weekend, bank holiday, Christmas etc and were paid early we had staff unexpectedly lose their UC entitlement for the month as UC recorded them earning double their usual amount in one pay period. The next month there would be no pay received (as it had been paid earlier to compensate for the bank holiday or whatever) but it caused a lot of problems to people's cashflow.
I think policy changed not long after and the reported payroll date is what UC use (so if you're paid on the 28th but for the month from 1st - 31st then 31st is the date you want to avoid your claim).

ChristmasCatBells · 29/06/2023 07:45

That's interesting @tweener will try and keep that in mind when the time comes.
@Symposium it seems lots of us are just going to have to apply when the time comes without knowing properly that we will be protected by the capital disregard/ transitional protection.

I am dreading this. We are a low income family with two lots of disability benefits, dh works full time and we use our tax credits for our food budget as it’s weekly so makes it convenient. When I’ve checked calculators for UC we would be worse off so I really hope the transitional payments do equal the same as we currently get. We are going to struggle going from weekly to monthly payments. We haven’t heard anything about changing yet.

AutumnCrow · 29/06/2023 08:01

DamnUserName21 · 28/06/2023 20:06

@AutumnCrow
She won't need to do a daily journal but she will need ensure she is put in the LCWRA category. I suggest she does her research to prepare.

She may need to do a LCWRA assessment. I am unsure of the details.

Thanks, that’s helpful. I’ve always found the Benefits and Work site to be good when I’ve looked previously.

I’ll have a look at that today and talk to her about it.

MymateDave · 29/06/2023 08:02

Hi guys Iv been on uc a few years now. Just a message to let the people who pay pension out of net pay knowthat i have never had an issue it automatically gets deducted each month and o don’t have to contact anyone.

spacechimp79 · 29/06/2023 08:43

So in the letter it states you can make a claim for uc even if you have capital or savings of more than 16K.
And then if the amount you entitled to on your existing benefits is more than you would get on uc, a top up is available. This is called transitional protection.
And that’s it! Doesn’t mention a year or any time frame so it is a bit worrying I guess!
