@PurpleFrog thank you for the suggestion. I have tried clicking on the "Complete Study" button but it informs me I have to complete the study first, which is frustrating as I already have and have the code to prove it. It's as if it's stuck in a loop and doesn't detect that the study has ended/closed. I've sent feedback and contacted the researchers but I'm not holding out much hope.

sorrynotathome · 14/03/2023 17:32

I've had some issues @Shufflebumnessie and I've done various things including refreshing the page, going int on a different device, closing down the tab and opening it again. Those things have largely worked - eventually!

PurpleFrog · 14/03/2023 18:18

@Shufflebumnessie Ah - OK. I have also had some studies where I am given the completion code, but then asked to click on another link to "save the data" before going back to Prolific. A few times I have automatically closed the window in the middle of reading the instruction!

What browser are you using? I always try and use Chrome on my laptop, unless told otherwise. If it says I can use phone or tablet Safari usually works OK for me.

Eek, I've been accepted in search sciences! Hoping for a decent run with it, 6 months and counting until the end of mat leave and desperately trying to replace my earnings so I can leave!

Congrats @rainbowzebra05!

I've only just found this thread and have noticed Search Sciences has been mentioned a lot.

I started working for SS around 13 years ago, and it was my first freelance copywriting job. I've been working as a freelance copywriter for 13 years now and the income pays all my mortgage/bills etc. It was a great start to a new career for me, and I still love what I do.

I only jumped onto this thread to say that SS are lovely, and the guy that runs it (Simon) is a gem, but just beware of late payments. They don't tend to have great cashflow and payments can be very late indeed which is why I stopped working for them.

I went back to them a little while ago to try again but didn't stay long. Simon warned me that they had the "same old issues" with payments and that sometimes it might be a little late.

So just thought I'd mention it in case you're banking on getting paid on time. I don't know how late things are at the moment, or even if things are as bad as they were. I just know that they've had an ongoing issue with late payments for more than 10 years so just factor that in. I rely on my freelance income to pay my bills so I need to trust that clients will pay me on time.

ruralwanderer · 15/03/2023 07:11

Congratulations @rainbowzebra05 Grin I love the work and have had no issues with payments so hopefully you won't either.

PoseyFlump · 15/03/2023 07:25

Was it @8DPWoah who had a problem with SS payments? I'm sure someone on this thread spoke about it before.

ruralwanderer · 15/03/2023 07:41

There were some posters last summer who were very late being paid which resulted in SS being removed from the recommended list but I continued to work for them and am very glad I did as I've had no issues with payment and have a continuous stream of work (£75 worth completed this week already).

OP posts:
rainbowzebra05 · 15/03/2023 07:57

Thank you for the heads up! I thankfully can hack late payments, I do bits of freelancing already so it's fairly standard here sadly. It shouldn't be, but I'm sure any of us who freelance will know how "normal" it is!

BecauseOfIndia · 15/03/2023 08:27

I'm one of the people who had a bad experience with SS, I would never deter anyone from trying different work, but for me it was a very unpleasant experience. The guy who runs it very quickly changed from 'Mr nice guy', and it wasn't so much a late payment (all the work I do is freelance so I am used to that) it was the lies and the fact that he was clearly paying other people - as evidence by people on here getting paid, but then claiming to me that the company couldn't pay me because there was no money in bank. I also found the work soul destroying and very low paid, so not getting anything for it was infuriating.

@ciderhouserules Someone on here a while ago suggested Chedder - it's an app that pays cashback when you shop. I've been using it and have found it really easy and surprising how quickly it adds up. If you shop at Sainsburys or Tescos it's definitely worthwhile. Here's my referral link:

Do you find shopping expensive? Join me on Cheddar & earn cashback automatically at Sainsbury's, TFL, Co-op, McDonald's, Greggs and more. Use my code & earn £2.50 for everyone you refer! WKDOHUI
get.cheddar.me/app/WKDOHUI

8DPWoah · 15/03/2023 09:22

I did and do have erratic payments from SS but I'm quite erratic putting them in too so I tend to go with the flow now! It's never been a big part of my income so I wasn't so focused on chasing.

As for me, I've had my JSA fine but I've got to tell them this week I've got a new 'normal' job but it won't start until the new school year so I'll feed back what they tell me about claiming in the mean time. I'm not sure I'll be able to find much temp work to tide me over til then that fits around the kids so could be a bit of a puzzle.

StalkedByASpider · 15/03/2023 12:39

Aah glad the payment issue seems to have resolved for most - the work and the briefs themselves were fine, it was just the very late payments.

@rainbowzebra05 - I've been freelancing for 13 years now so exactly as you say, late payments are unfortunately commonplace! My income pays the mortgage and bills so although I can accommodate late payments to a certain degree, there is a limit. SS were 2-3 months late paying my invoices and we never caught up so it was like working 2-3 months in arrears constantly. I just got fed up with it in the end.

I think also the issue with the late payments was that it was always "it will be paid next week" - and then it wasn't. So there was no certainty at all around payment, and you couldn't believe what you were being told.

I tend to work directly for clients now, but I'm still registered on a couple of writing boards in case I ever run short. They pay more than SS - on one of them you can choose your own articles to write from the list, and on the other site you can also sell your own articles that you've written. If you've got a knack for copywriting, I'd honestly give those a go too. Just in case the payments on SS get too erratic to absorb.

rainbowzebra05 · 15/03/2023 12:42

@StalkedByASpider thank you, would you mind me messaging you when I'm on the PC next about the boards, etc please? I'm trying to make the jump into fully freelance and it's the getting work bit that's making my head hurt! I run an Etsy store but need something more "safe" alongside before I can make that full step

ruralwanderer · 15/03/2023 15:44

@StalkedByASpider please could you let me know which other writing boards you work for? Thanks Smile

FisherThem · 15/03/2023 18:56

Following. About to face reduced earnings so every little helps!!

stillherenow · 15/03/2023 21:21

I had the same issues as @BecauseOfIndia with SS and I hated the work esp the short notice deadlines .
I’m sacking off potatoes now and have nothing on appen, so it’s just surveys for me now , I’m staying across this thread in case anything comes up on appen again

BecauseOfIndia · 16/03/2023 10:44

@Sleepeazie That's great! It won't make you rich but little bits here and there all add up, so it's definitely worth while.

Going back to the SS conversation - for me it was the worry that the company would go under never having paid me. At the time someone posted a link to the companies published accounts and it seemed he wasn't lying when he said there was nothing in the bank, that's how he runs it - on very slim margins. To me that was deeply worrying!

For those of you disillushioned with Potato and getting nothing from Appen, I can recommend Telus international. They often run the same projects as Appen but the pay is far higher. I do a mystery shopping project with them but also occasionally get offered one off voice recording things that pay loads for very little. It's worth signing up for.

TheGoogleMum · 16/03/2023 11:30

I get privacy certificate error when I try to look at Search Sciences, is it a safe website?

On mat leave and starting to worry about money a little so time to sign up to lots of things I guess! Any tips for starting out welcome.

Thanks

TheGoogleMum · 16/03/2023 13:29

Nevermind I RTFT and found the newer link!
I joined up to a bunch of these a couple of years ago but havent kept up with it. I did do some intellizoom surveys though.
Clickworker looks like it's just pennies for long tasks?
I've never really got Appen
Prolific I've never seen a study but it sound like checking it rarely does that and the way is it leave it on constantly in the background?
Typing speed not fast enough for TakeNote, though I've tried to sign up as a proof reader.

Some of these sound a bit like proper jobs to sign up which I'm not really looking for as it's just for a little extra top up while on mat leave to be honest.

sorrynotathome · 16/03/2023 14:41

@TheGoogleMum there’s a Chrome extension you can download that talks to you when a study becomes available. Handy if (like me) you’re easily distracted. 😁

usernotfound0000 · 16/03/2023 18:40

It's taken nearly a year but I've finally made it off the prolific waiting list! Just waiting on my test being reviewed and ID to be verified and hoping I will have some success like others have had. Is it best to use a computer for them or is a phone ok?

TheWhiteDoor · 16/03/2023 20:57

@BecauseOfIndia thanks for the tip, how do you sign up to Telus international? Had a look at their website but it’s not obvious?

BecauseOfIndia · 17/03/2023 07:32

@TheWhiteDoor Here is the link:

www.telusinternational.com/careers/ai-community

ruralwanderer · 17/03/2023 09:17

@usernotfound0000 some prolific studies can be done on a phone, others specify a computer. You just need to check each time 🙂
