If you unexpectedly had an extra £100k, what would you spend it on?

Deposit to buy a house.

Blondie1984 · 31/08/2021 02:07

A deposit on a house

Driftingblue · 31/08/2021 02:13

I would pay off my car so it will be easier when we need to buy dd a car in 2.5 years.

Since I can’t travel right now, the bulk of the rest would go towards the garden remodel of my dreams.

PurBal · 31/08/2021 02:14

Do the extension we want

MissCruellaDeVil · 31/08/2021 02:16

A teeth revamp!

Gingernaut · 31/08/2021 02:27

Get workmen in to bring the house up to a saleable standard and sell it to buy somewhere nicer

Any spare change would go towards an education fund.

hulahoopqueen · 31/08/2021 02:30

House deposit, new car, wedding! About an 8/10/10 split

FabulousIAm · 31/08/2021 02:44

People saying a deposit on a house? What? Where does everyone live where you cant buy at least one house for that amount? Id buy a house with plenty of land for an animal sanctuary and put ten grand away.

adeleh · 31/08/2021 02:45

Pay off mortgage.

Barkingdog · 31/08/2021 02:47

@FabulousIAm Where do you live where you can buy that for £90,000?

KintsugiCat · 31/08/2021 02:57

Getting divorced so I would put it together with equity I will get from sale of marital flat and buy a slightly less tiny flat that the one I can currently afford. I’d go for one that was “in need of decorative modernisation” and do it up.

3 week trip to US
Deposit to DD for house

At most it would buy half the cheapest 1-bed flat round here… SE England (not near London even).

WHEN I win £100k on premium bonds I’ll put £50k against the mortgage, £10k on holidays, £10k to each child’s account (2), £10k for next car, £10k for someone else in the family who needs some help.

And poof it’s gone!

@FabulousIAm, I am in Cornwall and an average nothing special three bed terrace is around £250k and considering I am the wrong side of 55 and will never earn enough to buy a house otherwise it would be very likely that it would be the only way I could ever buy a house and get out of rentals.

Vast tracts of the country? The average house price is £265,000, don’t do the silly “but in my isolated area with no amenities you could buy a mansion!” thing, it’s so boring.

I’d split my £100k with DP and use my half to retrain. But also fully wallpaper every room in the house, no feature walls.

SpareBread · 31/08/2021 04:33

A home.

I've just looked on right move. For 100k I could get a 40%share on a shared ownership flat. 2 bed. It's probably half the size of my (small) 2 bed terraced house. Can you use housing benefit/UC to pay the rent part of shared ownership? In which case I could consider buying that.

What I'd be more likely to do is pay off my debts. Learn to drive and buy a cheapish car. Take the DC on some kind of fancy foreign holiday. They've never been abroad. Maybe disneyland. Australia and one of those fancy bungalow pod things in the sea. And buy a new tent, with air poles and blackout bedrooms. Or maybe a caravan. Maybe a week in a tree house at centreparks because the dc moan they've never been (I think it's a rip off but if I've got 100k then might as well)

I assume saving not allowed also means I can't put it in the kids accounts. I would pay for ds1 to learn to drive and buy him a cheapish car too, but if I can't save the money to pay for ds2 to do the same then that's a bit unfair.

Other than that I don't know. Can't do a house deposit because I wouldn't be able to get a mortgage.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 31/08/2021 04:56

Pay off my mortgage.

Tipmeup · 31/08/2021 04:59

I need to move, so that!

HeronLanyon · 31/08/2021 05:02

I’d pay off any/all debts/mortgages etc.
Like above op id throw some at a property to bring it to a more sensible sale position.
Significant wardrobe revamp.
Some put aside (not saved) for somehow travelling when possible and in as environmentally friendly way possible.

I’d actually want in fantasy instead to buy some land (6+ acres would do) and some small tractor type vehicles and sturdy storm resistant poly tunnel. Then spend rest of life happily digging around growing and tending wildish areas for birds and wildlife. Think I need more than 100k for that.

isettled · 31/08/2021 05:03

Pay off a chunk of the mortgage probably £85k, a luxury holiday and a keepsake piece of jewellery probably a watch

ToLiveInPeace · 31/08/2021 05:28

If I can't put it in my early retirement investment fund, I'd use the cash to take a long sabbatical from work (to recover from the long-term health effects of my stressful public sector job) and rethink my entire future.

Hereweka · 31/08/2021 05:29

Renovate my house, which is in desperate need. Son's bedroom window is broken and I have to clean it very gently in case it falls apart!

hellcatspangle · 31/08/2021 05:48

Put it toward a little bolt hole by the sea.

Couldhavebeenme3 · 31/08/2021 05:59

60k to pay off my mortgage
10k to do up the garden and finish all the little jobs around the house including replacing a couple of windows
10k each to the kids (hopefully they'd invest it)
Invisalign braces
Wardrobe update
Pro declutterer followed by a cleaner until the cash ran out
