If you unexpectedly had an extra £100k, what would you spend it on?

@FabulousIAm

People saying a deposit on a house? What? Where does everyone live where you cant buy at least one house for that amount? Id buy a house with plenty of land for an animal sanctuary and put ten grand away.
In a place where studio flats are currently being advertised for £290k

It would probably all get eaten up by renovations we want to do, Kitchen, bathroom Windows and doors externally and internally, any remainder I’d put towards the mortgage.

KeepingOnKeepingUp · 31/08/2021 07:36

£20k on a fantastical holiday with the teens to Japan when we are able to travel freely.
£20k for each of them in a savings account for travel when they graduate.
£5k on essential house renovations
Remainder in an ISA

Mintjulia · 31/08/2021 07:37

Pay off the mortgage, have a new roof, have a holiday, hire a gardener. Smile

Stormwhale · 31/08/2021 07:37

I would give it all to my parents. They have helped us in so many ways and I think it would mean my df could retire now instead of in a couple of years

Elephantsparade · 31/08/2021 07:41

Id get solar panels about 7k and one of those air exchange heat pumps, an electric fiat 500, all go on a nice holiday and any remainder would pay off mortgage

WeAllHaveWings · 31/08/2021 07:41

We are in our 50s, I would keep some to buy our next new/used car then save/invest the rest to put towards early retirement.

alanahspreats · 31/08/2021 07:42

I would buy a car that doesn't break down every week and get some breakdown cover just in case it did ! It would be heaven! Then I'd spend the rest making my children happier than they could possibly be !

beela · 31/08/2021 07:45

If I'm not allowed to put it in savings for the dc, then maybe a campervan, plus fees on somewhere to store it as it wouldn't fit on our drive!

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 31/08/2021 07:46

Holiday, pay some money off the mortgage and put money away for Dc. So have you won OP?

ItsSunnyOutside · 31/08/2021 07:46

Abit boring but I would pay off a chunk of our morgage, then give some to my mum & dad. Buy dd some new toys/books/clothes.
Then I'd put the rest down on a family holiday for next year.

NotMyCat · 31/08/2021 07:50

Pay off my mortgage
New car
Change the spare room to a walk in wardrobe

LemonJelly76 · 31/08/2021 07:53

Pay off my mortgage which is around £85k

Or do the house up totally and then send whatsl leftover to the mortgage.

Probably the latter

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 31/08/2021 07:57

I'd pay off all but £10k of my mortgage, upgrade my car and buy a camper van. Always fancied a camper van and love the idea of travelling the length and breadth of Ireland (I live in NI). With the income that my tiny mortgage would free up, I'd save and then when the house prices have calmed down I'd buy a slightly bigger house a few streets over.

I think about this a lot Grin

ContadoraExplorer · 31/08/2021 08:04

Loft conversion and finish off some work on the rest of the house, pay off a chunk of mortgage, a little into DD's savings account and some away to cover my upcoming maternity leave. All very sensible really.

sHREDDIES19 · 31/08/2021 08:08

Use most of it to buy an investment property in South West (along with mortgage) and put some aside to get a brace to straighten my front teeth, give a modest gift to my family, get laser hair removal and give whatever is left to charity.

DiscoDown21 · 31/08/2021 08:11

Pay off the mortgage, car and driving lessons. Gift a few thousand or treat family.

90K wouldn’t even buy an apartment in this area, maybe one in a run down area. I could probably get a run down terraced a few miles away at a push. That’s why everyone says a deposit!

EvilPea · 31/08/2021 08:11

House deposit

UnGoogled · 31/08/2021 08:12

Pay off debt, buy a little studio flat for dc, tiny bit of fun money, a subscription to a few different development tools to get my freelancing business off the ground, whack the rest onto my mortgage.

Alarae · 31/08/2021 08:15

Pay off FIL who gave us money towards our house - ~40k

New windows for the house - 7k

Pay off car/building work - 7.5k

Splurge money (food, toys for DD, etc) - 2k

Pay off a bit of the mortgage - 20k

Keep the rest for ongoing repairs.

Not a lot of fun going on there really!

happytoday73 · 31/08/2021 08:16

Pay off mortgage... 2 decent holidays. Would then all be gone!

NotThatSocial · 31/08/2021 08:17

A big holiday, new car and get the garden landscaped. That would be about half the money, the rest would go towards paying off a chunk of the mortgage.

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 31/08/2021 08:29

Unpaid carer and lone parent (disabled dc) on benefits so my benefits would stop until the money had been used up by the cost of living and then I'd be back to square one - unfortunately it just wouldn't be enough to change my life as I have no chance of getting a mortgage so couldn't use it to buy anywhere (expensive part of the country and need to be near family for support). I'm sure if dc father got wind of it he'd refuse to pay any maintenance as well.

Now if I could win 500k please it would definitely be life changing as I could buy a house and have my own bedroom!!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 31/08/2021 08:34

Pay off mortgage, set some aside for a holiday post covid and the rest added to the children’s savings for their house deposits.
