Hi all, happy May. Welcome to this months thread. I'll load up the link later. If anyone else wants to do it, feel free, I'm rubbish at it.

The idea of this thread is to earn a bit of extra cash, as the title suggest. Have a look and these threads go back a while and might give you some ideas.

Newbies welcome. We're a lovely, helpful lot.

Same issue as others, no jobs showing for s*d :( hit and miss today!

It's soo annoying! Lol

I had a bit of a 'wobble' earlier about whether I should carry on with the project. I was over thinking my hours/effort I'm putting in and what my RPH is, and whether my invoice would get rejected.

Wish they'd give some feedback.

LoLo2020 · 11/05/2021 17:20
@LoLo2020 well done for managing 5 hours. I think I did 4 yesterday, but I'm on again now (so before 8am, which will also go onto tomorrows timings)
I'm going to aim for a bonus - not sure which one yet, lol. Just going to squeeze in as many hours as I can. Don't really want to add the hours up yet, as I like to leave it as a surprise Shock lol
😄 I might adopt that approach in relation to looking at the hours at the end!

LoLo2020 · 11/05/2021 17:23

@AnotherOne4 how are you scoring on the quizzes? That'll give you a pretty good indication of whether you're approach is right I reckon. You've come so far, don't jack it :) I'm keeping the faith that all will be well when the invoice goes in. Would be nice to have an audit outcome for our work thus far, that should give us a boost! Assuming the majority are right!

MrsWombat · 11/05/2021 17:30

I did quite a few Malta projects in 2019. All the invoices went through ok. Never had a problem. (The projects then disappeared from my dashboard into a Bermuda triangle for 18 months until they reappeared this month)

AnotherOne4 · 11/05/2021 19:03

@LoLo2020 - On the new quiz they sent out (yesterday I think it was) I got them all correct apart from one. So I guess that's a good sign.

I judge some of them really, really quick though. I'm thinking I should slow down, lol. I had one wiki page for 'pockets'. As in a men's suit pocket, how can I spend a minute reading about that lol!

First time on A&&r shops and have a query about refunds. Have £100 i could make back but when is it safe to return things? I completed the follow up surveys for these about 5 days ago.
Is it against the rules to return items?

AnotherOne4 · 12/05/2021 06:49

Any-one get the Sh availability survey? When you try to complete it, does it take you round in circles (you press submit, and it takes you back to the survey)?

Yes, same, hopefully they will re-send the link

Got this too. Find the survey in surveys tab for the project. Click to take it from there and you should see the confirmation page if it has gone through OK.
peabrainer · 12/05/2021 08:04

Thank you @AVL - didn't even know that tab existed!

AnotherOne4 · 12/05/2021 08:06

Thanks @peabrainer and @AVL Smile

Just passed Rev- going to try to start today- any tips from any experienced Revvers? First time doing transcription

YonderTweek · 12/05/2021 08:18

I was on S**land at 5.30 this morning and there was plenty of work. Spent most of yesterday waiting for jobs and not getting any. So I guess it depends on the time of day? I think I'll try to do a bit more but also I'm tired and tempted to wait and see if there's more work later on...

I'm really enjoying the project but I do feel like giving up because I'll never hit the targets, and if I have to spend all day in the queue just to clock less than two hours then it's not really the best use of my time.

swiftt · 12/05/2021 08:23

@peabrainer I started last month so not an experienced transcriptionist by any means, but I’ve done a fair bit of work for Rev now. To begin with, stick to shorter files and constantly refer to the style guide. All of your work is graded at this point. Once you’ve passed the ‘rookie’ phase, you get access to better paid files and you can take longer ones then. Then you’re only graded randomly, so the pressure comes off slightly. If you’ve got the time to put the minutes in to reach Plus, then that’s definitely worthwhile as it pays heaps better and you get access to ‘best effort’ files which are pretty much my bread and butter now. They pay really well and don’t get graded. Oh, and the Rev forum is really great for any questions that come up.

peabrainer · 12/05/2021 08:32

Thank you so much @swiftt I will make sure I do it really carefully to start with.
Do you find you have to Google proper names etc a lot? I was surprised to have to do that in the test, slows everything down so much.
I'm hoping it's a good alternative to Potato which used to be my bread and butter!

Heyha · 12/05/2021 08:41

@peabrainer I'm not Rev yet but I've already found as a learner transcriber that as @swiftt says shorter files are definitely the thing to start with, I did a 90 minute one this week (picked it because the recording quality was top notch) and really struggled to slog through it. 30 minutes seems to be my ideal at the moment, long enough to get your ear for the speakers but not too long that it drags on 😂

kneesknocking · 12/05/2021 08:49

@AVL I know I'm probably being a bit thick, but if it says 'thank you for taking the time to complete this survey' that means I have competed it doesn't it?Blush

swiftt · 12/05/2021 09:02

@peabrainer totally depends on the file, to be honest! If I’ve had to do a lot of research, I’ll add the customer to my favourites and that way usually I can essentially reuse the research on their next file if it’s still relevant.

@Heyha hahah yeah, I’m the same with those long files! I only slog through them when it’s best effort and the pay is worthwhile. Otherwise 30 mins is my sweet spot too!

But it’s especially important whilst you’re in the rookie phase to stick to very short files - less than 10 mins really. If you get a bad grade, and you’ve only done 2 30 minute files then you could be kicked out pretty much straight away. If you stick to shorter files, you’ll still have graded minutes left to boost your grade back up if you need to. But stick to the style guide and you’ll be alright! Grin

I actually need to crack on, I’ve spent all week looking for files and not really ‘fancying’ anything! Blush

Redcrayons · 12/05/2021 09:12

@StanleyR38 only my second time this month so no expert. I photographed all my stuff and send back as soon as to keep within the returns timescale for the retailer and it all went fine.

I couldn’t find anything to say you can or can’t return items but I’ve seen it talked about a few times in the chat so it must be pretty common.

AnotherOne4 · 12/05/2021 10:09

I was working this morning and found there was plenty of work. Although someone in chat, also from the UK, was saying there wasn’t any.

I’m kinda enjoying it too. I was pushing for the big bonus’ but I don’t think I’ll make it Sad There just aren’t enough hours in the day, and I like sleeping too much lol

ChubRubTub · 12/05/2021 10:44

@swiftt how much do you think you make hourly on average on Rev?

I do For**r on Appen and enjoy it. That's really short clips though. Not sure how I'd get with long ones! Is it similar to that with tags etc?

swiftt · 12/05/2021 11:03

@ChubRubTub anywhere between £10-15 an hour, I’d say. Last week was about £14 an hour because I stuck to the higher paid files religiously. I haven’t done that one, but with Rev you basically have access to a job board, you can preview files and pick and choose what you want to work on. They have files that range in length between a minute and 90 minutes plus, so there is all sorts. They have their own editor and you don’t need to do time stamps etc, except for inaudibles or foreign language. They also use AI so there are drafts that you can essentially just proofread and edit for a lot of files, so I do that quite often rather than typing from scratch.

whysotriggered · 12/05/2021 11:12

With regards to potato, definitely back into the quiet zone. Looking at the emails I am getting, I see they are recruiting again too. I can't imagine how anyone makes over £200 a month let alone £1000 which I remember some poster making.

ChubRubTub · 12/05/2021 11:16

@swiftt thanks a lot, that's really helpful. I think I'll give it a go. I'm sad, I actually quite enjoy transcription - especially if I'll be able to pick the files.
